Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Rubber Materials

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Rubber Materials written by Gert Heinrich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes recent international research and experimental developments regarding fatigue crack growth investigations of rubber materials. It shows the progress in fundamental as well as advanced research of fracture investigation of rubber material under fatigue loading conditions, especially from the experimental point of view. However, some chapters will describe the progress in numerical modeling and physical description of fracture mechanics and cavitation phenomena in rubbers. Initiation and propagation of cracks in rubber materials are dominant phenomena which determine the lifetime of these soft rubber materials and, as a consequence, the lifetime of the corresponding final rubber parts in various fields of application. Recently, these phenomena became of great scientific interest due to the development of new experimental methods, concepts and models. Furthermore, crack phenomena have an extraordinary impact on rubber wear and abrasion of automotive tires; and understanding of crack initiation and growth in rubbers will help to support the growthing number of activities and worldwide efforts of reduction of tire wear losses and abrasion based emissions.

Book The Measurement of Crack Tip Stresses by X ray Diffraction

Download or read book The Measurement of Crack Tip Stresses by X ray Diffraction written by John Edmond Allison and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ensure the structural integrity of present day structures subjected to variable amplitude cyclic stress histories, a knowledge of the crack tip stress field is important. In this investigation, crack tip stresses were measured in specimens of 1020 and 1045 steel using a semi-automatic x-ray diffraction technique. Crack tip residual stresses were measured in the unloaded condition and crack tip 'applied' stresses were measured under load. It was observed that, for the alloys tested and within the confines of stress analysis by x-ray diffraction, a dependence exists for the maximum crack tip residual stress on the level of the previous stress intensity factor and also for the maximum crack tip 'applied' stress on the level of the applied stress intensity. This is in sharp contrast to theoretical models of the crack tip stress fields which predict an independence between crack tip stresses and stress intensity levels. Crack tip stresses were observed relative to the fatigue crack growth retardation process. Post overload crack tip stresses were greatly reduced from their pre-overload levels. Limited studies indicated that crack growth, after an overload, had little or no effect on the overload-induced crack tip residual stress distribution. Measurements taken at applied loads, indicated that portions of the material behind the tip of the extended crack were in compression while areas ahead of the extended crack were in tension. These results were considered in light of possible retardation mechanisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the nanoscale effects has been recognized in materials research for over fifty years, but it is only recently that advanced characterization and fabrication methods are enabling scientists to build structures atom-by-atom or molecule-by molecule. The understanding and control of the nanostructure has been, to a large extent, made possible by new atomistic analysis and characterization methods pioneered by transmission electron microscopy. Nano and Microstructural Design of Advanced Materials focuses on the effective use of such advanced analysis and characterization techniques in the design of materials. Teaches effective use of advanced analysis and characterization methods at an atomistic level Contains many supporting examples of materials in which such design concepts have been successfully applied

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Measurement Using Digital Image Analysis Technique

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Measurement Using Digital Image Analysis Technique written by A. Nagar and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel approach to the measurement of fatigue crack growth at elevated temperatures based on digital image analysis technology is presented. An operational prototype was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of this technique to measure crack lengths at temperatures up to 1093°C (2000°F). The crack tip image transmission was accomplished using fiber-optic guides and relay lenses. The technique provides a direct (without calibration) measurement of the crack length and position with a resolution better than 0.025 mm (0.001 in.) and a capability for automation. The experimental observations of the crack tip using the digital image analysis system prototype showed that this technique can be applied to crack measurement at temperatures up to 1093°C (2000°F). The method requires further experimental work for verification of crack length accuracy under cyclic and thermal-mechanical spectrum loads, various specimen geometries, and other high temperature materials.

Book The Life of Cracks

Download or read book The Life of Cracks written by Srečko Glodež and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people find the concept of fracture and damage mechanics to be somewhat problematic, mainly because, until recently, close attention in mechanics was focused especially on the strength and resistance of materials. In this sense, to speak of fracture is as uncomfortable for some as it is to speak of a deadly disease. In confronting and preventing a fatal disease, one must understand its complexity, symptoms, and behavior; by the same token, in securing the strength of an engineering structure, one must understand the reasons and type of its potential failure. This book will provide knowledge and insights on this matter to its readers.

Book Procedures for Precision Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Using Crack Opening Displacement Techniques

Download or read book Procedures for Precision Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Using Crack Opening Displacement Techniques written by GR. Yoder and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes experimental and analytical procedures whereby the conventional commercial fracture mechanics clip-gage can be used for precision measurement of fatigue crack growth rate in compact-type specimens. Potential sources of error in measuring crack length via crack-opening displacement (COD) techniques are delineated. Comparisons are made between crack-length data obtained via specimen surface observations and COD techniques. Comparisons are also made between data analyzed by the secant and 7-point incremental polynomial methods. It is emphasized that COD techniques can enhance the accuracy of the secant method of data reduction. Steploading procedures using COD techniques are described. Proposed amendments to ASTM Tentative Test Method for Constant-Load-Amplitude Fatigue Crack Growth Rates Above 10-8 m/Cycle (E 647-78 T) regarding incrementing of crack-length measurements via COD techniques are discussed.

Book Aluminum Lithium Alloys

Download or read book Aluminum Lithium Alloys written by N Eswara Prasad and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because lithium is the least dense elemental metal, materials scientists and engineers have been working for decades to develop a commercially viable aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy that would be even lighter and stiffer than other aluminum alloys. The first two generations of Al-Li alloys tended to suffer from several problems, including poor ductility and fracture toughness; unreliable properties, fatigue and fracture resistance; and unreliable corrosion resistance. Now, new third generation Al-Li alloys with significantly reduced lithium content and other improvements are promising a revival for Al-Li applications in modern aircraft and aerospace vehicles. Over the last few years, these newer Al-Li alloys have attracted increasing global interest for widespread applications in the aerospace industry largely because of soaring fuel costs and the development of a new generation of civil and military aircraft. This contributed book, featuring many of the top researchers in the field, is the first up-to-date international reference for Al-Li material research, alloy development, structural design and aerospace systems engineering. Provides a complete treatment of the new generation of low-density AL-Li alloys, including microstructure, mechanical behavoir, processing and applications Covers the history of earlier generation AL-Li alloys, their basic problems, why they were never widely used, and why the new third generation Al-Li alloys could eventually replace not only traditional aluminum alloys but more expensive composite materials Contains two full chapters devoted to applications in the aircraft and aerospace fields, where the lighter, stronger Al-Li alloys mean better performing, more fuel-efficient aircraft
