Book Biological Effects and Physics of Solar and Galactic Cosmic Radiation Part B

Download or read book Biological Effects and Physics of Solar and Galactic Cosmic Radiation Part B written by Charles E. Swenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space missions subject human beings or any other target of a spacecraft to a radiation environment of an intensity and composition not available on earth. Whereas for missions in low earth orbit (LEO), such as those using the Space Shuttle or Space Station scenario, radiation exposure guidelines have been developed and have been adopted by spacefaring agencies, for exploratory class missions that will take the space travellers outside the protective confines of the geomagnetic field sufficient guidelines for radiation protection are still outstanding. For a piloted Mars mission, the whole concept of radiation protection needs to be reconsidered. Since there is an increasing interest of many nations and space agencies in establishing a lunar base and lor exploring Mars by manned missions, it is both, timely and important to develop appropriate risk estimates and radiation protection guidelines which will have an influence on the design and structure of space vehicles and habitation areas of the extraterrestrial settlements. This book is the result of a multidisciplinary effort to assess the state of art in our knowledge on the radiation situation during deep space missions and on the impact of this complex radiation environment on the space traveller. It comprises the lectures by the faculty members as well as short contributions by the students given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Biological Effects and Physics of Solar and Galactic Cosmic Radiation" held in Armacao de Pera, Portugal, 12-23 October, 1991.

Book Results of Monte Carlo Calculations of Neutron Spectra and Doses Outside the BDMS Shielding

Download or read book Results of Monte Carlo Calculations of Neutron Spectra and Doses Outside the BDMS Shielding written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of Monte Carlo calculations of the neutron dose rates and neutron spectra outside Blend Down Monitoring System (BDMS) shielding were performed with U.S. and Russian neutron fluence-to-dose conversion coefficients. The purpose of these calculations was to facilitate the proper interpretation of the dose rate measurements from rem meters outside the BDMS shielding. An accurate determination of the dose rate is of particular interest so that dose rate can be compared with the applicable regulatory limit. The calculations show that the neutrons outside the BDMS shielding are significantly reduced in energy, i.e. the spectrum is shifted (moderated) towards the lower energies and contains significantly larger amount of neutrons in the energy range below 100 keV. The result of these calculations indicates that the dose measurement for the BDMS neutrons is overestimated from 25% to 55% depending on the location around BDMS when using either Russian or U.S. dose conversion coefficients. For an accurate neutron dose determination the application of an appropriate correcting factor to the neutron dose measurement is necessary.

Book Terrestrial Neutron induced Soft Error In Advanced Memory Devices

Download or read book Terrestrial Neutron induced Soft Error In Advanced Memory Devices written by Takashi Nakamura and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-03-28 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrestrial neutron-induced soft errors in semiconductor memory devices are currently a major concern in reliability issues. Understanding the mechanism and quantifying soft-error rates are primarily crucial for the design and quality assurance of semiconductor memory devices. This book covers the relevant up-to-date topics in terrestrial neutron-induced soft errors, and aims to provide succinct knowledge on neutron-induced soft errors to the readers by presenting several valuable and unique features.

Book Fast Neutron Spectrum and Dose Rate in Water and in Aluminum water Laminations

Download or read book Fast Neutron Spectrum and Dose Rate in Water and in Aluminum water Laminations written by G. I. Coulbourn and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fast neutron spectrum was measured by seven threshold reaction detectors at various distances from a point fission neutron source in water and in two aluminum and water mixtures. The attenuation of the fast neutron dose rate and of the thermal neutron flux was also determined. The experimental results were compared with calculations made with the ANISN computer code. By use of experimentally determined counting efficiencies, absolute saturation activities of the threshold reaction products were determined. A method of neutron spectrum unfolding was devised which represented the fast neutron spectrum by a group of successive exponentials calculated from the saturation activities. The reported spectra generally agreed with the results predicted by the ANISN code. The fast neutron dose rate was measured directly with p-i-n silicon diode dosimeters and indirectly by applying flux-to-dose conversion factors to the measured fast neutron flux. Good agreement was obtained between these measurements and calculations. The saturation activities from the 32S(n, p) reaction were compared with the measured and calculated dose rates and an activity-to-dose-rate conversion factor was estimated. (Author).

Book Fundamentals for the Assessment of Risks from Environmental Radiation

Download or read book Fundamentals for the Assessment of Risks from Environmental Radiation written by Christa Baumstark-Khan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human health as well as aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are threatened from increa sing levels of environmental radiation of various sources, many of them of anthropoge nic causality: large areas of the former Soviet Union suffer from radioactive pollution, in particular after the Chemobyl accident; the increase in the incidence of UVB radiati on at the Earth's surface as a result of a progressive depletion of stratospheric ozone is a global problem that requires international concerted actions; in areas of former uranium mining the natural radiation level is substantially increased due to elevated radon levels; a growing portion of the population involved in air traffic is exposed to increased levels of natural radiation; and with the International Space Station an increasing number of astronauts will be exposed to the complex field of cosmic radiation. To estimate the corresponding risks, a better knowledge of the underlying radiobiological mechanisms at the molecular, cellular and system level is required. This book is the result of a multidisciplinary effort to discuss the current state of knowledge of the fundamental processes that result from interactions of environmental radiation -ionizing as well as UV radiation -with living matter and the existing radiati on protection concepts, and then to define future research work needed as fundamental information for the assessment of risks from increased levels of environmental radiation to human health and ecosystem balance. It comprises the key lectures and statements presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop.
