Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measure for Measure, And, Antony and Cleopatra The strongest argument for the date 1603, generally adopted by critics, is derived from the many links be 'tween this play and Hamlet; they both contain similar re ections on Life and Death, though Measure for M eas ure deals, not like Hamlet with the problems which be set one of exceptional temperament, but with mere human nature (w. Pater, Appreciations, p. There are, moreover, striking parallelisms of expression in the two plays. Similarly, incidents in. Measure for A] easure re call All s Well that Buds Well; Isabella and Helena seem almost twin-sisters; but the questions at issue concerning the latter play are too intricate to warrant us in drawing conclusions as regards the date of the former play. Book Selected Notes Upon Shakespeare s Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Notes Upon Shakespeare s Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra Classic Reprint written by J. O. Halliwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Notes Upon Shakespeare's Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra Some said, John, print them others said, Not so Some said, They might do good; others said, No. Under the impression, however, that a collection of extracts, illustrative of Shakespeare's language and allusions, taken from Old English books, is never without some value, I have decided to print a selec tion from my materials on each play separately. Upon some of the dramas there will be but a small contribution, but it is trusted that there will be hardly a volume in the series, however diminutive, which will not offer information of some little use to a future editor. Book Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra

Download or read book Shakespeare s Antony and Cleopatra written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical Knight and Verplanck argue that Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra was not written till after the date of Blount's entry, and that this entry referred to some other perform ance 3 their main reason being the admitted fact that the style of this play bespeaks the Poet's highest maturity of mind. I agree, however, with Malone and Collier in as signing the composition to 1607, or the early part of 1608, when the author was in his forty-fourth year. This brings it within the same five years of his life, from 1605 to 1610, which witnessed the production of Macon}; and King Lear. It will hardly be questioned that at the time of writing these dramas the Poet's mind was equal to any achievement within the compass of human thought. Nor can I taste any pecu liarities of style in this play, as distinguished from the proper tokens of dramatic power, that should needs infer any more ripeness of mind than in case of the other dramas of that penod. Book Antony and Cleopatra

Download or read book Antony and Cleopatra written by William Shakespeare and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. For this second edition of Antony and Cleopatra, David Bevington has included in his introductory section a thorough consideration of recent critical and stage interpretations, demonstrating how the theatrical design and imagination of this play make it one of Shakespeare's most remarkable tragedies. The edition is attentive throughout to the play as theatre: a detailed, illustrated account of the stage history is followed, in the commentary, by discussion of staging options offered by the text. The commentary is especially full and helpful, untangling many obscure words and phrases, illuminating sexual puns, and alerting the reader to Shakespeare's shaping of his source material in Plutarch's Lives.

Book Shakespeare and the Law

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Law written by Bradin Cormack and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Shakespeare is inextricably linked with the law. Legal documents make up most of the records we have of his life, and trials, lawsuits, and legal terms permeate his plays. Gathering an extraordinary team of literary and legal scholars, philosophers, and even sitting judges, Shakespeare and the Law demonstrates that Shakespeare’s thinking about legal concepts and legal practice points to a deep and sometimes vexed engagement with the law’s technical workings, its underlying premises, and its social effects. The book’s opening essays offer perspectives on law and literature that emphasize both the continuities and contrasts between the two fields. The second section considers Shakespeare’s awareness of common law thinking and common law practice, while the third inquires into Shakespeare’s general attitudes toward legal systems. The fourth part of the book looks at how law enters into conversation with issues of politics and community, whether in the plays, in Shakespeare’s world, or in our own world. Finally, a colloquy among Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Judge Richard Posner, Martha C. Nussbaum, and Richard Strier covers everything from the ghost in Hamlet to the nature of judicial discretion.
