Book excerpt: When I was growing up in New Jersey at about eight or nine years old, I use to watch World War I and World War II history documentaries on the PBS channel and would try to write down everything that the narrator was saying in a composition book. I enjoyed doing that and did it for about a year, but I soon moved on to other things that kids at that age enjoyed. Little did I know at that time that many years later, I would write and publish my first book titled “Vine Street.” I guess that the skill was always in me, I just didn’t know it. I was always fascinated with the movies from Hammer Film Productions, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stephen King, but one day I saw a movie that inspired me, directed by John Carpenter. That movie was “Halloween.” So, I came up with an idea for my first book, but it took another 35 years to get it started. I guess it’s never too late, and finally finished it. It has now been two years since my first book was published and I am excited about my newest creation titled “Somber Town.” All small towns have secrets, and this one is no different, but with a little twist. The genre I chose is suspense, thriller, and a little horror in between, but hopefully, the readers will enjoy it.

Book A Lesson in Red Beans and Rice

Download or read book A Lesson in Red Beans and Rice written by Katherine T. Tousant and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Lesson in Red Beans and Rice" is a contemporary, high-concept novel about life's do's and don'ts as one struggles to make transition from being a child to becoming an adult. It boldly addresses the tough decision each individual has to make regarding when and how the invisible line separating the child from woman or man is crossed. Written in form of fiction, the book opens with a conversation between two lifelong-best friends, two sixteen-year-old girls, two weeks before their Junior Prom. In the conversation, there's a sharp division between them on when and how a first event should be shared. Marie, the carefree adventurous one, is convinced Junior Prom night is when they should become sexually active. Lisa, more serious, is set on them abstaining until marriage as they'd earlier pledged. Lisa looks on in surprise as Marie boldly proclaim, "If you really love him and he loves you; then, you owe it to each other to share your love. Humph! Girl, you'd better wise up and stop all that old timing stuff." In response, Lisa cocks her head to the side, echoes Marie's statements and asks, 'Old-timing stuff?' Since when do you call having good morals 'old-timing stuff,' my friend?" From those statements, the girls and the many other facinating characters introduced in the work speak openly and honestly about their hopes, fears and desires for love and happiness in a conversation revealing of every facet of the issue. The work traces the days of the weeks leading to Prom. Excitement and conflict is present on every page. The book shows a through analysis of solving conflicts between body, mind and spirit. It uniquely addresses many basic issues facing youth today. The readers will be able to share in the special events so common to all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan is well known: the expansionist Communists overwhelmed a poor country as a means of reaching a warm-water port on the Persian Gulf. Afghan mujahideen upset their plans, holding on with little more than natural fighting skills, until CIA agents came to the rescue with American arms. Humiliated in battle, the Soviets hastily retreated. It is a great story-but it never happened. In this brilliant, myth-busting account, Rodric Braithwaite, the former British ambassador to Moscow, challenges much of what we know about the Soviets in Afghanistan. He provides an inside look at this little-understood episode, using first-hand accounts and piercing analysis to show the war as it was fought and experienced by the Russians. The invasion was a defensive response to a chaotic situation in the Soviets' immediate neighbor. They intended to establish a stable, friendly government, secure the major towns, and train the police and armed forces before making a rapid exit. But the mission escalated, as did casualties. Braithwaite does not paint the occupation as a Russian triumph. To the contrary, he illustrates the searing effect of the brutal conflict on soldiers, their families, and the broader public, as returning veterans struggled to regain their footing back home. Now available in paperback, Braithwaite carries readers through these complex and momentous events, capturing those violent and tragic days as no one has done before.

Book The American Way of War

Download or read book The American Way of War written by Tom Engelhardt and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creator of TomDispatch.com “tackles our military fetish . . . He takes on our war-possessed world with clear-eyed, penetrating precision” (Mother Jones). Tom Engelhardt, creator of the website TomDispatch.com, takes a scalpel to the American urge to dominate the globe. Tracing developments from 9/11 to present day, this is an unforgettable anatomy of a disaster that is yet to end. Since 2001, Tom Englehardt has written regular reports for his popular site TomDispatch that have provided badly needed insight into US militarism and its effects, both at home and abroad. When others were celebrating the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, he warned of the enormous dangers of both occupations. In The American Way of War, Engelhardt documents Washington’s ongoing commitment to military bases to preserve—and extend—its empire; reveals damning information about the American reliance on air power, at great cost to civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan; and shows that the US empire has deep historical roots that precede the Bush administration—and continued through the presidency of Barack Obama. Praise for Tom Engelhardt and The American Way of War “Engelhardt is absorbing and provocative. Everything he writes is of a satisfyingly congruent piece.” —The New York Times “Tom Engelhardt provides a clear-eyed examination of U.S. foreign policy in the Bush and Obama years, and details unsparingly how Obama has inherited—and in many cases exacerbated—the ills of the Bush era.” —Daniel Luban, Inter Press Service “Tom Engelhardt is a national treasure and always worth reading.” —Juan Cole, professor of history at the University of Michigan

Book excerpt: PEN/FAULKNER AWARD FINALIST • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Martin Dressler: the essential stories across three decades that showcase his indomitable imagination. • "A book of astonishingly beautiful and moving stories by one of America’s finest and most original writers.” —Charles Simic, The New York Review of Books Steven Millhauser’s fiction has consistently, and to dazzling effect, dissolved the boundaries between reality and fantasy, waking life and dreams, the past and the future, darkness and light, love and lust. The stories gathered here unfurl in settings as disparate as nineteenth-century Vienna, a contemporary Connecticut town, the corridors of a monstrous museum, and Thomas Edison’s laboratory, and they are inhabited by a wide-ranging cast of characters, including a knife thrower and teenage boys, ghosts and a cartoon cat and mouse. But all of the stories are united in their unfailing power to surprise and enchant. From the earliest to the stunning, previously unpublished novella-length title story—in which a man who is dead, but not quite gone, reaches out to two lonely women—Millhauser in this magnificent collection carves out ever more deeply his wondrous place in the American literary canon.

Book Manifest Destinies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven E. Woodworth
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2010-11-02
  • ISBN : 0307594645
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Manifest Destinies written by Steven E. Woodworth and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of the 1840s, Manifest Destinies captures the enormous sense of possibility that inspired America’s growth and shows how the acquisition of western territories forced the nation to come to grips with the deep fault line that would bring war in the near future. Steven E. Woodworth gives us a portrait of America at its most vibrant and expansive. It was a decade in which the nation significantly enlarged its boundaries, taking Texas, New Mexico, California, and the Pacific Northwest; William Henry Harrison ran the first modern populist campaign, focusing on entertaining voters rather than on discussing issues; prospectors headed west to search for gold; Joseph Smith founded a new religion; railroads and telegraph lines connected the country’s disparate populations as never before. When the 1840s dawned, Americans were feeling optimistic about the future: the population was growing, economic conditions were improving, and peace had reigned for nearly thirty years. A hopeful nation looked to the West, where vast areas of unsettled land seemed to promise prosperity to anyone resourceful enough to take advantage. And yet political tensions roiled below the surface; as the country took on new lands, slavery emerged as an irreconcilable source of disagreement between North and South, and secession reared its head for the first time. Rich in detail and full of dramatic events and fascinating characters, Manifest Destinies is an absorbing and highly entertaining account of a crucial decade that forged a young nation’s character and destiny.

Book China s New Nationalism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Hays Gries
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2004-01-30
  • ISBN : 0520931947
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book China s New Nationalism written by Peter Hays Gries and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three American missiles hit the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, and what Americans view as an appalling and tragic mistake, many Chinese see as a "barbaric" and intentional "criminal act," the latest in a long series of Western aggressions against China. In this book, Peter Hays Gries explores the roles of perception and sentiment in the growth of popular nationalism in China. At a time when the direction of China's foreign and domestic policies have profound ramifications worldwide, Gries offers a rare, in-depth look at the nature of China's new nationalism, particularly as it involves Sino-American and Sino-Japanese relations—two bilateral relations that carry extraordinary implications for peace and stability in the twenty-first century. Through recent Chinese books and magazines, movies, television shows, posters, and cartoons, Gries traces the emergence of this new nationalism. Anti-Western sentiment, once created and encouraged by China's ruling PRC, has been taken up independently by a new generation of Chinese. Deeply rooted in narratives about past "humiliations" at the hands of the West and impassioned notions of Chinese identity, popular nationalism is now undermining the Communist Party's monopoly on political discourse, threatening the regime's stability. As readable as it is closely researched and reasoned, this timely book analyzes the impact that popular nationalism will have on twenty-first century China and the world.
