Book Modeling Wave Transformation in the Surf Zone

Download or read book Modeling Wave Transformation in the Surf Zone written by William R. Dally and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By drawing a macroscopic analogy between an idealized surf zone and a hydraulic jump, an expression for the spatial change in energy flux due to breaking is developed. Analytical solutions for wave height decay due to shoaling and breaking on a flat shelf and a plane beach are presented and the results compared with laboratory data from Horikawa and Kuo (1966). The agreement is good. Setdown/setup in mean water level, bottom friction losses, and bottom profiles of arbitrary shape are introduced next and the equations transformed for numerical solution. The model is calibrated and verified with laboratory data with good results for the wave decay, but not so favorable results for setup. A test run on a prototype scale profile containing three bar and trough systems demonstrates the model's ability to describe the shoaling, breaking, and wave reformation process. Bottom friction is found to play a negligible role in wave decay in the surf zone when compared with shoaling and breaking.

Book Coastal Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Coastal Hydrodynamics written by Robert A. Dalrymple and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Coastal Hydrodynamics Conference, held in Newark, Delaware, June 28-July 1, 1987. Sponsored by the Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Division of ASCE. This collection contains 57 papers that review the state of the art in our understanding of the hydrodynamics of the nearshore zone. Papers cover topics such as shallow water wave statistics, nearshore currents, wave motions, and wave-structure interactions. Other papers report on field measurements of water waves, including both the short (or wind) waves and the long waves, which result in low frequency motions in the surf zone. Still others present theoretical models of the resulting nearshore circulation. This collection will be of interest to engineers working in coastal engineering and nearshore oceanography.

Book A Numerical Model for Shoaling and Refraction of Third order Stokes Waves Over an Irregular Bottom

Download or read book A Numerical Model for Shoaling and Refraction of Third order Stokes Waves Over an Irregular Bottom written by Mary A. Cialone and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This numerical model solves for water wave height, angle, and number directly on a rectangular grid. Required input are the deepwater wave height, period, and direction and the bathymetry in the region of interest. The model employs a finite difference scheme. The irrotationality equation of the wave number vector is solved for the wave angle, and the conservation of energy flux equation is solved for the wave height. Iteration is required. A closed form expresssion, to third-order, for the time-averaged, vertically integrated energy flux is derived. Stokes' second definition of wave celerity is used in the derivation to reduce the number of intermediate calculations. Expressions for the wave energy and the group velocity are also derived. The model is written such that both first-order (linear) and third-order stokes wave theory model computations may be conducted. The modeling process begins at higher intermediate depth, or deep water, and waves are propagated shoreward until an Urseell number of 25 or another, user-specified, value is reached. The model is applied for the following cases: (a) comparison of small amplitude and finite amplitude wave refraction and shoaling on a plane beach, (b) refraction and shoaling over an irregular bottom configuration, and (c) comparison of the model shoaling predictions to laboratory data of Iverson (1951).

Book Wave Shoaling

Download or read book Wave Shoaling written by Robert C. Y. Koh and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a contribution to a larger project for studying the 'Modification of Wave Spectra on the Continental Shelf and in the Surf Zone.' Prior to dealing with a wave spectrum, a study of nonlinear effects on periodic waves appears to be necessary. For this purpose it is assumed that both friction effects and reflection effects are small. Then the principle of conservation of energy flux is applied to a periodic wave. This calculation has already been applied to a Stokes wave (periodic irrotational) to a third order of approximation (Le Mehaute and Webb, 1964). The purpose of this report is to perform the calculation up to the fifth order and to compare the corresponding result, with the third and first order of approximation. It will be the purpose of another (pending) report to present the limits of the principle of conservation of energy flux and to present a method of calculation which takes also into account bottom friction and reflection effect as well as nonlinear effects consistently.
