Book Channel Kindness Stories of Kindness and Community

Download or read book Channel Kindness Stories of Kindness and Community written by Born This Way Foundation Reporters and published by Feiwel & Friends. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller For Lady Gaga, kindness is the driving force behind everything she says and does. The quiet power of kindness can change the way we view one another, our communities, and even ourselves. She embodies this mission, and through her work, brings more kindness into our world every single day. Lady Gaga has always believed in the importance of being yourself, being kind to yourself, and being kind to others, no matter who they are or where they come from. With that sentiment in mind, she and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, founded Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a kinder and braver place. Through the years, they've collected stories of kindness, bravery and resilience from young people all over the world, proving that kindness truly is the universal language. And now, we invite you to read these stories and follow along as each and every young author finds their voice just as Lady Gaga has found hers. Within these pages, you’ll meet young changemakers who found their inner strength, who prevailed in the face of bullies, who started their own social movements, who decided to break through the mental health stigma and share how they felt, who created safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, and who have embraced kindness with every fiber of their being by helping others without the expectation of anything in return. In one story, you’ll read about a young person with an autoimmune disease, who after being bullied at school, learned how to practice self-love and started an organization with the mission of educating others about the importance of self-love, too; and in another story, you’ll meet a young person who decided to start a movement to help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraged others to talk about their feelings openly and honestly, a reminder that kindness and mental wellness go hand in hand. Not only were we moved by these individual acts of kindness, but we were also touched by the many stories of organizations, neighborhoods, and entire communities that fully dedicated themselves to helping those in need and found new, innovative ways to make our world a kinder and braver place. Individually and collectively, these stories prove that kindness not only saves lives but builds community. Kindness is inclusion, it is pride, it is empathy, it is compassion, it is self-respect and it is the guiding light to love. Kindness is always transformational, and its never-ending ripples result in even more kind acts that can change our lives, our communities, and our world.

Book Home Delivered Meals for Older Americans

Download or read book Home Delivered Meals for Older Americans written by Fredric Buchholtz and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary focus of this demonstration project was the provision of adequate. well-balanced. and medically appropriate meals for the homebound aged. The major objectives of the project were to assess and document the feasibility of various systems of food preparation, packaging, and delivery as a vehicle for meeting the nutritional needs of the homebound aged in the city of St. Petersburg, Florida. Recipients received one home delivered meal each weekday. To implement the program, criteria for acceptance were adopted based on psychological, physiological, or sociological need, age, and geographic restrictions. A system of screening prospective clients in their own homes was adopted. Among the components evaluated were various packaging systems, on site preparation of special diets, and meal delivery systems utilizing both project staff and volunteers. Project assessment was both objective (cost per meal, temperature obtained, hours of labor required, etc.) and subjective (reported benefit, perceived ease of administration, etc.). Findings indicated that certain packaging systems were more adaptable than others for home delivered meals. Special diets prepared on site were found to be unfeasible. A volunteer delivery system proved to be more efficient and effective, and significantly less costly than a system utilizing project vehicles and staff. Guidelines based on project experience were developed. The results of this demonstration should be of assistance to social service workers. public health officials, nurses, physicians, hospitals, and others who are interested in developing nutrition programs for the elderly.

Book Nourishing the Soul The Real Value of Meals on Wheels

Download or read book Nourishing the Soul The Real Value of Meals on Wheels written by Robert U. Montgomery and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of the national Meals on Wheels program transcends delivering meals to home-bound recipients. In Nourishing the Soul--- the Real Value of Meals on Wheels, author Robert U. Montgomery documents how it improves life emotionally, spiritually, and even physically for volunteers, as well as recipients. Ninety-five-year-old volunteer Dorothy Gouin provided the inspiration for this book, and she is profiled in Part I. "Some might say she's a legacy," said Cher Robinson, director of the center where Dorothy volunteers. "She's been here approximately 19 years, helping, guiding, teaching, listening, and most of all loving all who have met her. I believe Dorothy is an angel." The second part uses stories and experiences from volunteers and meal recipients to reveal how the value of the program extends far beyond delivery of food. "It is an honor and privilege to be part of this great program," said one volunteer. "Everyone needs that human contact, and it's a really great feeling to do this for them. It fills our hearts with appreciation, gratitude, compassion, and, sometimes, even love." Research reveals volunteering and random acts of kindness of most any kind stimulate the same pleasure centers of the brain associated with food and sex. In other words, helping others provides a natural high. And a meal recipient shared this: "What can I say? So many times the volunteers are the only human contact I have for weeks. The meals mean more than you can ever know. This program and the volunteers are a great blessing and so is the information that you provide for other programs, such as the pet food pantry. Thank you to each and every one for what you do." In fact, 59 percent of home-delivered meal recipients live alone. Nine out 10 added that the meals help them feel more secure and live independently. The third part is about the often-unappreciated senior centers, where meals are prepared, and the valuable resources that they provide for their communities. Unfortunately, many people mistakenly people believe that they are only for "poor people." In fact, the centers are multi-purpose gathering places for seniors of all income brackets. Yes, they provide meals, but they also assist with health needs and questions and tax concerns. They offer educational programs and recreational opportunities. They play host to and/or sponsor fun-filled events as fundraisers. Montgomery hopes that this book will inspire more people to volunteer and, by so doing, improve their own lives while helping others. And he hopes that it will encourage more seniors to visit their local centers for food, fun, and friendship. Book excerpt: Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX) strives to provide a system of support for its senior clients in order to extend their independence and health as they age. Currently, funding for MOWCTX is in jeopardy; for-profit companies seek to acquire federal funds MOWCTX relies on. To preserve their funding, I assisted MOWCTX in gaining an understanding of how their model offers more than nutritional support. Observations of deliveries and 20 semi-structured interviews with current clients were conducted. Research findings suggest that there are additional practical benefits, including the ready-to-eat meals and face-to-face interactions with volunteers, that are unique to MOWCTX.

Book Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults

Download or read book Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older adults are a growing demographic group in the United States, and a range of physical, social, financial, and cultural factors affect their nutritional status. Metabolic and physiologic changes that accompany normal aging modify the nutritional requirements of older adults. An examination of evidence is needed to better understand how nutritional status is associated with aging and risk of mortality or chronic disease among older adults. Underpinning many, if not most, nutritional problems in older adults is socioeconomic status. Therefore, understanding access challenges to healthy food, including geographic, financial, and transportation barriers, also is needed to better understand how to meet the nutritional needs of older adults. On October 28-29, 2015, the Food and Nutrition Board convened a workshop, Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults, in Washington, DC. Participants examined factors in the physical, social, and cultural environment that affect the ability of older adults to meet their daily dietary needs. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Aging Nutrition and Taste

Download or read book Aging Nutrition and Taste written by Jacqueline B. Marcus and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 380 million people worldwide are 60 years of age or older. This number is predicted to triple to more than 1 billion by 2025. Aging, Nutrition and Taste: Nutrition, Food Science and Culinary Perspectives for Aging Tastefully provides research, facts, theories, practical advice and recipes with full color photographs to feed the rapidly growing aging population healthfully. This book takes an integrated approach, utilizing nutrition, food science and the culinary arts. A significant number of aging adults may have taste and smell or chemosensory disorders and many may also be considered to be undernourished. While this can be partially attributed to the behavioral, physical and social changes that come with aging, the loss or decline in taste and smell may be at the root of other disorders. Aging adults may not know that these disorders exist nor what can be done to compensate. This text seeks to fill the knowledge gap. Aging, Nutrition and Taste: Nutrition, Food Science and Culinary Perspectives for Aging Tastefully examines aging from three perspectives: nutritional changes that affect health and well-being; food science applications that address age-specific chemosensory changes, compromised disease states and health, and culinary arts techniques that help make food more appealing to diminishing senses. Beyond scientific theory, readers will find practical tips and techniques, products, recipes, and menus to increase the desirability, consumption and gratification of healthy foods and beverages as people age.

Book Evaluating Food Assistance Programs in an Era of Welfare Reform

Download or read book Evaluating Food Assistance Programs in an Era of Welfare Reform written by National Research Council and Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was prepared in response to a request from the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It summarizes the discussions at a February 1998 workshop convened by the Committee on National Statistics; the Board on Children, Youth, and Families; and the Food and Nutrition Board. The fiscal year 1998 (FY1998) appropriations bill for USDA gave ERS responsibility for all research and evaluation studies on USDA food assistance programs. The bill provided $18 million to fund these studies, an increase from $7 million in FY1997. ERS asked the Committee on National Statistics for assistance in identifying new areas of research and data collection and in further improving the evaluation studies of food assistance programs. By bringing together many who work on evaluation of food assistance programs, policy analysis, survey methods, nutrition, child nutrition and child development, outcome measurement, and state welfare programs, the issues presented and discussed at the workshop provided ERS with information that could be used to develop a framework for their research program.
