Book excerpt: This fun, engaging memoir is about a clever, strong-willed, mischievous, creative gutsy gal who was always out of the box. She proclaims she never saw that silly box! She has always questioned societal norms and injustices, insisting life should make more sense. This resulted in interesting, amusing experiences with fascinating people from diverse walks of life and cultures. For seventy-seven years when the world said ‘No’ she persevered with a resounding ‘YES!’ She has retained a childlike wonder and delight for life that is bold and entertaining. She has tried to make her planet kinder, especially for the downtrodden. Difficult setbacks only made her more determined to enjoy life to the fullest with meaningful lifelong relationships. Often, she’s had to pick herself up and dust herself off! Shunning bitterness, clinging to faith, she has showed the world real love. An encourager gifted at teaching, she has quick wit and is great fun.

Book Unfollow Me

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jill Louise Busby
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2021-09-07
  • ISBN : 1635577128
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Unfollow Me written by Jill Louise Busby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate, impertinent, and incisive collection about race, progress, and hypocrisy from Jill Louise Busby, aka Jillisblack. Jill Louise Busby spent years in the nonprofit sector specializing in Diversity & Inclusion. She spoke at academic institutions, businesses, and detention centers on the topics of Race, Power, and Privilege and delivered over two-hundred workshops to nonprofit organizations all over the California Bay Area. In 2016, fed up with what passed as progressive in the Pacific Northwest, Busby uploaded a one-minute video about race, white institutions, and faux liberalism to Instagram. The video received millions of views across social platforms. As her pithy persona Jillisblack became an "it-voice" weighing in on all things race-based, Jill began to notice parallels between her performance of "diversity" in the white corporate world and her performance of "wokeness" for her followers. Both, she realized, were scripted. Unfollow Me is a memoir-in-essays about these scripts; it's about tokenism, micro-fame, and inhabiting spaces-real and virtual, black and white-where complicity is the price of entry. Busby's social commentary manages to be both wryly funny and achingly open-hearted as she recounts her shape-shifting moves among the subtle hierarchies of progressive communities. Unfollow Me is a sharply personal and self-questioning critique of white fragility (and other words for racism), respectability politics (and other words for shame), and all the places where fear masquerades as progress.

Book excerpt: As a young man growing up in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, having no conscious knowledge of a Southern Blues Band, "The Allman Brothers Band", a Capricorn Records act managed by the president of the company, Phil Walden, from Macon, Georgia, I was about to embark on a journey through time and people I otherwise never would have met leaving me with many fond memories and thanks for having lived a life in that era place and time. This is my story! My first recollection of Duane Allman came too late to appreciate his musical career while he was still alive, it took his untimely death (October 29th, 1971). Twiggs Lyndon was Duane Allman's most devoted advocate, also the first Road Manager of the Allman Brothers Band.

Book Looking Beyond Race

Download or read book Looking Beyond Race written by Otis Milton Smith and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Looking Beyond Race, Otis Milton Smith recounts his life as an African American who overcame poverty and prejudice to become a successful politician, and eventual president of General Motors. In Looking Beyond Race, Otis Milton Smith (1922-94) recounts his life as an African American who overcame poverty and prejudice to become a successful politician, going on to become the first black vice president and general counsel of General Motors. Born in the slums of Memphis, Tennessee, Smith was the illegitimate son of a black domestic worker and her prominent white employer. Although he identified with his mother's blackness, he inherited his father's white complexion. This left him open to racism from whites, who resented his African American heritage, and blacks, who resented his skin color. Throughout his life, Smith worked with and met many prominent Americans. He knew boxer Joe Louis, future general Daniel "Chappie" James, future Detroit mayor Coleman Young, and the nation's first African American general, B. O. Davis Jr. Through politics he knew Michigan's prominent politicians and was appointed by Governor John Swainson to the Michigan Supreme Court, making him the first black man since Reconstruction to sit on any supreme court in the nation. Smith also knew nationally known figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Estes Kevfauver, and presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Through his civil rights work, he met A. P. Tureaud, Roy Wilkins, and Benjamin Hooks, and he worked closely with Vernon Jordan. Looking Beyond Race provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of America's largest corporation. Smith was an early advocate of the increased cooperation between business and government that was so necessary for business negotiating the complexities of a global economy. In 1983 he retired as general counsel for the corporation, having been the company's first black officer. This memoir, which Smith dictated during the three years before his death in 1994, is a compelling tale that ends with the inspirational story of Smith's reconciliation with his white relatives who still live in the South. In this highly readable memoir, Looking Beyond Race provides a moving tale that will appeal to readers interested in African American history, politics, labor relations, business, and Michigan history.

Book Running with Jesus

Download or read book Running with Jesus written by W. Bennett and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitting in the quiet morning, his mind flashed back to his grandson, Ethan, and his stubborn display of determination to have his way. Yes indeed, he had to admit, he was like his grandson. He was also determined and perhaps that was the reason he couldn't escape that memory. But he had so many times before relived memories of changes in his life. Why? Because he always felt great comfort in recalling the many difficult times he had been blessed. Times when he had prayed for help like the 23rd mile incidents and had found something deep inside to help him through. Though he considered himself a problem solver, he felt like he knew his limitations. Perhaps that's where he developed the attitude that he could deal with anything with the Lord's help, but there were many, many things he could not handle unless God helped. Still this was uncharacteristic and he was drawn to problem solve.
