Book excerpt: This book is a collection of fairy tales in Udeghe (Udihe), an endangered Tungus language spoken by approximately 100 people in the southern part of the Russian Far East. It provides the first fairly representative sample of folklore in the Southern dialect of Udeghe. The twenty-five texts were recorded from Udeghe speakers in the Primorje region of Russia between 1984 and 1997. They are published in phonological transcription and supplied with morpheme-by-morpheme glosses and English translations. The footnotes clarify certain Udeghe words, expressions, objects and customs, and provide information on when and how the texts were recorded, as well as about similar motifs that appear in other published sources on the folklore of the Udeghe, and other Tungus people. The book also contains a preface which explains the conventions used in rendering the texts, and gives a brief introduction to Udeghe language and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume of Babel & Bibel, an annual of ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. The principal goal of the annual is to reveal the inherent relationship between Assyriology, Semitics, and biblical studies—a relationship that our predecessors comprehended and fruitfully explored but that is often neglected today. The title Babel & Bibel is intended to point to the possibility of fruitful collaboration among the three disciplines, in an effort to explore the various civilizations of the ancient Near East. The tripartite division of Babel & Bibel corresponds to its three principal spheres of interest: ancient Near Eastern, Old Testament, and Semitic studies. Contributions are further subdivided into articles, short notes, and reviews.

Book The Broadview Anthology of Restoration and Early Eighteenth Century Drama

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of Restoration and Early Eighteenth Century Drama written by J. Douglas Canfield and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first new full-scale anthology of Restoration and eighteenth-century drama in over sixty years. Concentrating on plays from the heyday of 1660-1737, it focuses especially on Restoration drama proper (1660-1688) and Revolution drama (1689-1714), with a smaller selection of plays from the early Georgian period (1715-1737) and a glimpse at the later Georgian period’s “laughing comedy” (1770s and 80s). It includes nine sub-genres (heroic romance, political tragedy, personal tragedy, tragicomic romance, social comedy, subversive comedy, corrective satire, menippean satire, and laughing comedy), with the preponderance of exposure given to the jewel of this theatre, its comedy. The core canonical plays from the era—from Dryden’s All for Love and Behn’s The Rover to Congreve’s The Way of the World and Sheridan’s School for Scandal—are all here, but so are a remarkably wide range of non-canonical works. There are many more plays by women than in any previous general anthology of drama of the period. Also included are a number of works from the neglected 1660s, whose comedies feature delightful, subversive, levelling folk elements. In all there are forty-one plays; each is fully annotated and prefaced with an historical introduction. Also included are a general introduction, head-notes for each genre, and a glossary.

Book Marriage la Mode

Book excerpt: John Dryden's play has rarely, if ever, been published with the included sheet music, rendering performances difficult. This edition has crisp new copies of the songs "Whilst Alexis Lay Pressed" and "Why Should a Foolish Marriage Vow" transcribed from the original 17th century printings.Marriage à-la-Mode was first performed in London in 1673 by the King's Company. It is written in a combination of prose, blank verse and heroic couplets. It has often been praised as Dryden's best comedic endeavour, and it's said that "the comic scenes are beautifully written, and Dryden has taken care to connect them with the serious plot by a number of effective links. He writes with . . . one of the most thoughtful treatments of sex and marriage that Restoration comedy can show."The play contains two songs, "Why Should a Foolish Marriage Vow" by Robert Smith and "Whilst Alexis Lay Pressed" by Nicholas Staggins, both set to Dryden's lyrics and printed in the 1673 book Choice Songs and Ayres for One Voyce to Sing to the Theorbo-Lute or Bass-Viol.
