Book excerpt: Globalization has given the world opportunities to bring people together in ways previously undreamt of in both real and virtual worlds. However, it has privileged industrialized capitalist growth and initiated a series of environmental, financial, demographic and political crises. The poorest people on the planet have been most adversely affected, through loss of jobs, low-paid work that is insufficient to provide a decent standard of living, health hazards, rising food and energy prices, environmental degradation, armed conflict and resource depletion. In this context, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which had looked to a more prosperous future for the planet’s most disadvantaged people only a few years ago are unlikely to be met across the board. And the challenges of environmental degradation question the very relevance of the MDG targets in contemporary societies.

Book Environmental Change and Sustainable Social Development

Download or read book Environmental Change and Sustainable Social Development written by Sven Hessle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does climate change affect social work and social development? What actions are needed to integrate the three pillars of economic development, environmental development and social protection? With global warming and the increase in natural disasters due to the emission of greenhouse gases, an alternative approach to the natural environment is vital. The main focus of this volume is to emphasize the person-in-environment concept and to find measures for its implementation. For social work the environment has traditionally been viewed as a world of human relationships as opposed to the interaction between man and environment. This informative and incisively written edited collection brings together experts from around the world to analyze the person-in-environment concept and to find measures for its implementation. Through the presentation of theoretical and practical platforms for environmental social work or ’green social work’, we hope to bring about a new paradigmatic shift in our attitude to the concept of person-in- environment.

Book Carbon Dioxide Emission in Maritime Container Transport and comparison of European deepwater ports CO2 Calculation Approach Analysis and CO2 Reduction Measures

Download or read book Carbon Dioxide Emission in Maritime Container Transport and comparison of European deepwater ports CO2 Calculation Approach Analysis and CO2 Reduction Measures written by Konstantin Veidenheimer and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maritime container transport accounts for approximately 90 percent of global trade volumes. Largest container vessels represent challenges for container ports, such as the required draft of 15.5 meters. In order to be competitive, many ports try to integrate in global supply chains. Furthermore, environmental issues play a growing role in the maritime business. Hence, this book concentrates on CO2 emissions from maritime supply chains involving European deepwater ports. This research investigates carbon dioxide emissions of maritime container transport from Asia into the European hinterland through new built German Jade-Weser-Port (JWP) compared to the deepwater ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Trieste. Furthermore, these ports are compared on the basis of competitive factors such as port characteristics and hinterland connectivity. This book also addresses measures for CO2 reduction in maritime door-to-door container transport.

Book The Science of Climate Migration

Download or read book The Science of Climate Migration written by Frank R. Spellman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the nexus between science and migration and examines how the two are inextricably intertwined. The Science of Climate Migration primarily addresses the science of global climate change and additionally examines how this change is more than a region being too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet, or too windy; rather it is also about heightened military tensions, political instability, and myriad other factors. History has shown that this change is felt most acutely in developing countries that are least equipped to adapt. This inability to adapt is considered to be a driver that motivates local residents to find “greener pastures” through migration. Further, the book discusses the increasing need for the implementation and utilization of non-polluting renewables for use in energy production as a means to stave off environmental crises. Features Examines how and why climate change effects and human migration are inextricably intertwined. Discusses the increasing need for the implementation of non-polluting renewables for use in energy production as a means to stave off environmental crises. Explains how wildlife is also sensitive to shifts in climate and how this in turn affects their migration as well.
