Book excerpt: An in-depth study of the most significant Irish clergyman in the history of the state For three decades, 1940-72, as Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland, John Charles McQuaid imposed his iron will on Irish politicians and instilled fear among his clergy and laity. No other churchman amassed the religious, political and social power which he exercised with unscrupulous severity. An admirer of the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover, Archbishop McQuaid built up a vigilante system that spied on politicians and priests, workers and students, doctors and lawyers, nuns and nurses, soldiers and trade unionists. There was no room for dissent when John Charles spoke in the name of Jesus Christ. This power was used to build up a Catholic-dominated state in which Protestants, Jews and feminists were not welcome.

Book Ireland s Helping Hand to Europe

Download or read book Ireland s Helping Hand to Europe written by Jérôme aan de Wiel and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-war Marshall Plan aid to Europe and indeed Ireland is well documented, but practically nothing is known about simultaneous Irish aid to Europe. This book provides a full record of the aid – mainly food but also clothes, blankets, medicines, etc. – that Ireland donated to continental Europe, including France, the Netherlands, Hungary, the Balkans, Italy, and zones of occupied Germany. Starting with Ireland’s neutral wartime record, often wrongly presented as pro-German when Ireland in fact unofficially favoured the western Allies, Jerome aan de Wiel explains why Éamon de Valera’s government sent humanitarian aid to the devastated continent. His book analyses the logistics of collection and distribution of supplies sent abroad as far as the Greek islands. Despite some alleged Cold-War hijacking of Irish relief – and this humanitarianism was not above the politics of that East-West confrontation – it became mostly a story of hope, generosity and European Christian solidarity. Rich archival records from Ireland and the European beneficiary countries, as well as contemporary local and national newspapers across Europe, allow the author to measure and describe not only the official but also the popular response to Irish relief schemes. This work is illustrated with contemporary photographs and some key graphs and tables that show the extent of the aid programme.

Book The Formation Existence and Deconstruction of the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland

Download or read book The Formation Existence and Deconstruction of the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland written by Alex Cahill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945, the Irish Catholic Church began a unique relationship with the entertainment industry through an organization known as the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland. This Guild, whose members included Jimmy O’Dea, Noel Purcell, Cyril Cusack, and Gabriel Fallon, acted as a microcosm of twentieth-century Ireland, dramatically depicting the heartaches and successes of the Irish Catholics. This unprecedented study of the Catholic Stage Guild begins an investigation on the contemporary relationship between the Irish Catholic Church and theatre that, until now, has rarely been examined. Written for those interested in theatre studies, Catholic studies, and Irish studies, the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland’s persuasion over the theatre population both within and outside the country’s borders proposes a story long overdue to be told – until now.

Download or read book The Schism of 68 written by Alana Harris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the critical reactions and dissenting activism generated in the summer of 1968 when Pope Paul VI promulgated his much-anticipated and hugely divisive encyclical, Humanae Vitae, which banned the use of ‘artificial contraception’ by Catholics. Through comparative case studies of fourteen different European countries, it offers a wealth of new data about the lived religious beliefs and practices of ordinary people – as well as theologians interrogating ‘traditional teachings’ – in areas relating to love, marriage, family life, gender roles and marital intimacy. Key themes include the role of medical experts, the media, the strategies of progressive Catholic clergy and laity, and the critical part played by hugely differing Church-State relations. In demonstrating the Catholic Church’s important (and overlooked) contribution to the refashioning of the sexual landscape of post-war Europe, it makes a critical intervention into a growing historiography exploring the 1960s and offers a close interrogation of one strand of religious change in this tumultuous decade.
