Book President McKinley

Download or read book President McKinley written by Robert W. Merry and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lively, definitive, eye-opening, [this book] by acclaimed historian Robert W. Merry brilliantly evokes the life and presidency of William McKinley, cut short by an assassin. Most often lost in the shadow of his brilliant and flamboyant successor, TR, the twenty-fifth president is presented by Merry as a transformative figure, the first modern Republican. It was President McKinley who established the United States as an imperial power. In the Spanish-American War he kicked Spain out of the Caribbean; in the Pacific he acquired Hawaii and the Philippines through war and diplomacy; he took the country to a strict gold standard; he developed the doctrine of 'fair trade'; he forced the 'Open Door' to China; and he forged the 'special relationship' with Great Britain. McKinley established the noncolonial imperialism that took America global. He set the stage for the bold leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, who built on his accomplishments. [This book] brings to life a sympathetic man and an often overlooked president. Merry raises his rank to a chief executive of consequence who paved the way for the American Century."--Dust jacket flap.

  • Author : Robert J. Cook

Download or read book Civil War Memories written by Robert J. Cook and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has the Civil War continued to influence American life so profoundly? Winner of the 2018 Book Prize in American Studies of the British Association of American Studies At a cost of at least 800,000 lives, the Civil War preserved the Union, aborted the breakaway Confederacy, and liberated a race of slaves. Civil War Memories is the first comprehensive account of how and why Americans have selectively remembered, and forgotten, this watershed conflict since its conclusion in 1865. Drawing on an array of textual and visual sources as well as a wide range of modern scholarship on Civil War memory, Robert J. Cook charts the construction of four dominant narratives by the ordinary men and women, as well as the statesmen and generals, who lived through the struggle and its tumultuous aftermath. Part One explains why the Yankee victors’ memory of the “War of the Rebellion” drove political conflict into the 1890s, then waned with the passing of the soldiers who had saved the republic. It also touches on the leading role southern white women played in the development of the racially segregated South’s “Lost Cause”; explores why, by the beginning of the twentieth century, the majority of Americans had embraced a powerful reconciliatory memory of the Civil War; and details the failed efforts to connect an emancipationist reading of the conflict to the fading cause of civil rights. Part Two demonstrates the Civil War’s capacity to thrill twentieth-century Americans in movies such as The Birth of a Nation and Gone with the Wind. It also reveals the war’s vital connection to the black freedom struggle in the modern era. Finally, Cook argues that the massacre of African American parishioners in Charleston in June 2015 highlighted the continuing relevance of the Civil War by triggering intense nationwide controversy over the place of Confederate symbols in the United States. Written in vigorous prose for a wide audience and designed to inform popular debate on the relevance of the Civil War to the racial politics of modern America, Civil War Memories is required reading for informed Americans today.

Book How to Learn and Memorize the Psalms of the Bible

Download or read book How to Learn and Memorize the Psalms of the Bible written by Anthony Metivier and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you'd like to improve your ability to learn, memorize and recall the Psalms of the Bible by as much as 100%, 200%, even 300% (or more) ... using simple memory techniques that you can learn in 15-20 minutes (or less), then this may be the most important book that you will ever read. Believe it or not, it really doesn't matter if you think you have a good memory or not. The information in this book will teach you: * Why memory is like a bicycle everyone can ride (with some minor personal adjustments). * The real reason why no one should ever be squeamish about memorization or memorizing all 150 Psalms. * Why and how some of the most famous memory skills are applicable to memorizing poetry, especially the Psalms. * How you can easily create a "Psalm location" memory system based on an easy-to-use principle that lets you imagine your way through places you already know and love. * Unique memory techniques that will have you literally "tuning in" on the language of the Psalms. * Two secret ways you can use relaxation to aid the memorization process. These two methods alone are worth the price of this book because they will literally eliminate your stress and apprehension as you memorize the Psalms. * And much, much more ... These techniques have been used by real Bible students and scholars, most of whom previously considered themselves owners of a "bad memory," to make real strides in learning and memorizing the Psalms. Don't worry! None of these techniques are rocket science and they certainly don't require brain surgery or a PhD. Frankly, if you can memorize a short email address or the name of a movie, then you can use this system to memorize poetry as rich and diverse as the Psalms. Plus, everything you'll learn in this book applies to every other part of the Bible. And with a little imagination, the system you'll learn is easily transferable to other poetry too. But there's really no time to lose. Every day that you are not using this simple memorization system, you are literally stealing from yourself the joy of being able to effortlessly learn, memorize, recall and recite the Psalms as you easily expand the natural abilities of your mind.

Book The Outlaws of Sherwood

Download or read book The Outlaws of Sherwood written by Robin McKinley and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Newbery Medal–winning author of The Hero and the Crown brings the Robin Hood legend to vivid life. Young Robin Longbow, subapprentice forester in the King’s Forest of Nottingham, must contend with the dislike of the Chief Forester, who bullies Robin in memory of his popular father. But Robin does not want to leave Nottingham or lose the title to his father’s small tenancy, because he is in love with a young lady named Marian—and keeps remembering that his mother too was gentry and married a common forester. Robin has been granted a rare holiday to go to the Nottingham Fair, where he will spend the day with his friends Much and Marian. But he is ambushed by a group of the Chief Forester’s cronies, who challenge him to an archery contest . . . and he accidentally kills one of them in self-defense. He knows his own life is forfeit. But Much and Marian convince him that perhaps his personal catastrophe is also an opportunity: an opportunity for a few stubborn Saxons to gather together in the secret heart of Sherwood Forest and strike back against the arrogance and injustice of the Norman overlords.

Book The Memory of the Civil War in American Culture

Download or read book The Memory of the Civil War in American Culture written by Alice Fahs and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War retains a powerful hold on the American imagination, with each generation since 1865 reassessing its meaning and importance in American life. This volume collects twelve essays by leading Civil War scholars who demonstrate how the meanings of the Civil War have changed over time. The essays move among a variety of cultural and political arenas--from public monuments to parades to political campaigns; from soldiers' memoirs to textbook publishing to children's literature--in order to reveal important changes in how the memory of the Civil War has been employed in American life. Setting the politics of Civil War memory within a wide social and cultural landscape, this volume recovers not only the meanings of the war in various eras, but also the specific processes by which those meanings have been created. By recounting the battles over the memory of the war during the last 140 years, the contributors offer important insights about our identities as individuals and as a nation. Contributors: David W.
