Book School Segregation in Western North Carolina

Download or read book School Segregation in Western North Carolina written by Betty Jamerson Reed and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although African Americans make up a small portion of the population of western North Carolina, they have contributed much to the area's physical and cultural landscape. This enlightening study surveys the region's segregated black schools from Reconstruction through integration and reveals the struggles, achievements, and ultimate victory of a unified community intent on achieving an adequate education for its children. The book documents the events that initially brought blacks into Appalachia, early efforts to educate black children, the movement to acquire and improve schools, and the long process of desegregation. Personnel issues, curriculum, extracurricular activities, sports, consolidation, and construction also receive attention. Featuring commentary from former students, teachers and parents, this work weighs the value and achievement of rural segregated black schools as well as their significance for educators today.

Book McDowell County North Carolina

Download or read book McDowell County North Carolina written by James Lawton Haney and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McDowell County is unique culturally and topographically. Formed by legislative action in 1842 from Burke and Rutherford Counties, McDowell's northern and western borders trace the towering heights and rugged terrain of the Blue Ridge, while its eastern and southern borders incorporate broad river bottoms and lower hills of the Piedmont. Showcasing more than 220 images, this volume is a mosaic of McDowell County's first century and covers the towns of Marion and Old Fort, as well as smaller communities like Brackettown, Crooked Creek, Dyartsville, Glenwood, Greenlee, Little Switzerland, Montford's Cove, Nebo, and North Cove. Views of waterfalls on the Catawba River and Tom's Creek, along with those of the eerie limestone formations of Linville Caverns, attest to nature's bounty. Aging photographs, many of which are published for the first time, draw attention to families, churches, schools, memorable personalities, and historic sites. This collection also brings to life the county's defining events: the arduous construction of two railways through the mountains, the destruction of Marion by fire in 1894, the disastrous flood of 1916, the textile strike of 1929, and the patriotic response by the citizenry to national crises. Photographs of selected homes, commercial sites, churches, and schools testify to the diverse architectural style and levels of economic and social well-being found in the county.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the half century preceding widespread school integration, black North Carolinians engaged in a dramatic struggle for equal educational opportunity as segregated schooling flourished. Drawing on archival records and oral histories, Sarah Thuesen gives voice to students, parents, teachers, school officials, and civic leaders to reconstruct this high-stakes drama. She explores how African Americans pressed for equality in curricula, higher education, teacher salaries, and school facilities; how white officials co-opted equalization as a means of forestalling integration; and, finally, how black activism for equality evolved into a fight for something "greater than equal--integrated schools that served as models of civic inclusion. These battles persisted into the Brown era, mobilized black communities, narrowed material disparities, fostered black school pride, and profoundly shaped the eventual movement for desegregation. Thuesen emphasizes that the remarkable achievements of this activism should not obscure the inherent limitations of a fight for equality in a segregated society. In fact, these unresolved struggles are emblematic of fault lines that developed across the South, and serve as an urgent reminder of the inextricable connections between educational equality, racial diversity, and the achievement of first-class citizenship.

Download or read book Marion written by Kim Clark and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the City of Marion's motto, "Where Main Street Meets the Mountains," was chosen to describe the present-day city, it is also an apt description of Marion's past. Founded in 1844 at a rugged crossroads at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Marion was hewn out of the land by the hard work and determination of its citizens. Mountaineer mingled with businessman, and a unique community took shape, colored across time by triumph, tragedy, and progress. In Marion, the community's rich history is brought to life in over 200 vintage images. Drawn from small private collections as well as from public archives, many of these photographs are published for the first time. Historical images show Marion's early days when horse and wagon struggled to navigate the muddy ruts of Main Street, the aftermath of the disastrous fire of 1894, gatherings and public events at the dawn of the 20th century, the beginnings of industry, and glimpses of everyday life. The city's three mill villages are also featured: Clinchfield, Cross Mill, and East Marion.
