This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Works of Robert McCormick Including His Invention of the Reaper Robert mccormick was descended from that sturdy stock of Ulster men who came over from Scotland and peopled the north of Ireland in the reign of James I. Of Scotland, and by their industry and thrift they turned that wilderness into the most prosperous de pendency of the British Crown. They made themselves thereby so much felt by the English in manufacturing and other industries, that they caused the government to levy heavy and repressive taxes on them for the protection of the Englishmen across the channel. The result of this was that great numbers of those people emigrated to America, and a very large per cent of them, after landing in Phila delphia, betook themselves to the frontier, and many of them settled west of the Susquehanna River, before the Indians ceded the land to the Penns in 1736. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Memoriam Cyrus Hall McCormick: Born February 15th, 1809; Died May 13th, 1884 Disappointed but not discouraged, he turned his thoughts to the reaper, and resolved to devote himself to its improvement and introduction into general use. With very restricted facilities on the farm in Virginia for the manufacture and sale of the reapers, he still worked on there, im proving his invention during the brief period of harvest. Soon he realized that the young West was the field on which he might hope for the accomplishment of greater results, and so in 1846 he removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, then a western town, and prepared to build the reapers; for by that time it was well understood that a success ful machine had been invented for cutting grain by horse-power. During all these years, while battling with the discouragements always aecom panying the efforts to introduce any new machine, Mr. Mccormick managed to add improvement to improvement, a work which he kept up during his whole life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyrus Hall McCormick and the Reaper: 1809-1909, Commemorating the Centenary of the Birth of Cyrus Hall McCormick, Inventor of the Reaper It would not sufl'ice to advance a plane cutting edge against the grain, or to use revolving blades or automatic shears - these had been abundantly tried by prior inventors, and all had met with irretrievable failure. The matter of developing and apply ing the requisite power was also of primary importance; this could only be obtained from the rotation of wheels under trac tion, and the amount was limited to the draft power of the team. The machine must therefore be reduced to a minimum of weight, lest it be too cumbersome to be propelled and guided over rough surfaces. The most economical method of applying draught is on the central line of resistance; yet in this machine, where economy in draught and equalization of strains are so essential, the team cannot travel directly in front of the cutting apparatus without trampling and shelling the grain. Most of the early inventors had arranged to place the team in the rear, thus mak ing a push machine. The drawing for mccormick 's first patent illustrated alternative methods - but from his earliest practise he adopted the side draft, and this is now almost universally used. The machine must be Operated by men who are not mechanics, and generally they are at a distance from machine shops; in case the reaper breaks down, it usually is impracticable to seek technical aid, since protracted delay may mean the loss of a considerable share of the season's harvest. Illustrations of the conflicting conditions which it was necessary to reconcile, might be multiplied almost indefinitely. Until a plan consistent with all these exactions was devised, there could be no practical out come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
