Book Irish Mathematical Olympiad Manual

Download or read book Irish Mathematical Olympiad Manual written by J. Cruickshank and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Manual was primarily written to assist Irish secondary-school students who are preparing to compete in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad (held in May each year) or the International Mathematical Olympiad (held each July). It has also proved useful in other countries, and is popular among people who simply enjoy mathematics. The Mathematical Olympiads are written examinations, based on what is called "second--level mathematics". There are significant variations between countries in the content of second--level programmes in Mathematics. Thus, Irish competitors find themselves faced with problems that require background knowledge that is not covered in the Senior Cycle programme for Irish schools. In order to have a reasonable chance of success, they need to master this material. The authors are academics who have many years experience as voluntary trainers of Olympiad contestants and in other mathematical enrichment activities for young people. The selection of material is based on this experience.

Book Moduli Spaces of Riemannian Metrics

Download or read book Moduli Spaces of Riemannian Metrics written by Wilderich Tuschmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies certain spaces of Riemannian metrics on both compact and non-compact manifolds. These spaces are defined by various sign-based curvature conditions, with special attention paid to positive scalar curvature and non-negative sectional curvature, though we also consider positive Ricci and non-positive sectional curvature. If we form the quotient of such a space of metrics under the action of the diffeomorphism group (or possibly a subgroup) we obtain a moduli space. Understanding the topology of both the original space of metrics and the corresponding moduli space form the central theme of this book. For example, what can be said about the connectedness or the various homotopy groups of such spaces? We explore the major results in the area, but provide sufficient background so that a non-expert with a grounding in Riemannian geometry can access this growing area of research.

Book Graphs and Matrices

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ravindra B. Bapat
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2014-09-19
  • ISBN : 1447165691
  • Pages : 197 pages

Download or read book Graphs and Matrices written by Ravindra B. Bapat and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition illustrates the power of linear algebra in the study of graphs. The emphasis on matrix techniques is greater than in other texts on algebraic graph theory. Important matrices associated with graphs (for example, incidence, adjacency and Laplacian matrices) are treated in detail. Presenting a useful overview of selected topics in algebraic graph theory, early chapters of the text focus on regular graphs, algebraic connectivity, the distance matrix of a tree, and its generalized version for arbitrary graphs, known as the resistance matrix. Coverage of later topics include Laplacian eigenvalues of threshold graphs, the positive definite completion problem and matrix games based on a graph. Such an extensive coverage of the subject area provides a welcome prompt for further exploration. The inclusion of exercises enables practical learning throughout the book. In the new edition, a new chapter is added on the line graph of a tree, while some results in Chapter 6 on Perron-Frobenius theory are reorganized. Whilst this book will be invaluable to students and researchers in graph theory and combinatorial matrix theory, it will also benefit readers in the sciences and engineering.

Book Anachronism and Antiquity

Download or read book Anachronism and Antiquity written by Tim Rood and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study both of anachronism in antiquity and of anachronism as a vehicle for understanding antiquity. It explores the post-classical origins and changing meanings of the term 'anachronism' as well as the presence of anachronism in all its forms in classical literature, criticism and material objects. Contrary to the position taken by many modern philosophers of history, this book argues that classical antiquity had a rich and varied understanding of historical difference, which is reflected in sophisticated notions of anachronism. This central hypothesis is tested by an examination of attitudes to temporal errors in ancient literary texts and chronological writings and by analysing notions of anachronistic survival and multitemporality. Rather than seeing a sense of anachronism as something that separates modernity from antiquity, the book suggests that in both ancient writings and their modern receptions chronological rupture can be used as a way of creating a dialogue between past and present. With a selection of case-studies and theoretical discussions presented in a manner suitable for scholars and students both of classical antiquity and of modern history, anthropology, and visual culture, the book's ambition is to offer a new conceptual map of antiquity through the notion of anachronism.

Book Formal Ontology in Information Systems

Download or read book Formal Ontology in Information Systems written by B. Bennett and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006-10-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in areas such as artificial intelligence, formal and computational linguistics, biomedical informatics, conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering and information retrieval have come to realise that a solid foundation for their research calls for serious work in ontology, understood as a general theory of the types of entities and relations that make up their respective domains of inquiry. In all these areas, attention is now being focused on the content of information rather than on just the formats and languages used to represent information. The clearest example of this development is provided by the many initiatives growing up around the project of the Semantic Web. And, as the need for integrating research in these different fields arises, so does the realisation that strong principles for building well-founded ontologies might provide significant advantages over ad hoc, case-based solutions. The tools of formal ontology address precisely these needs, but a real effort is required in order to apply such philosophical tools to the domain of information systems. Reciprocally, research in the information sciences raises specific ontological questions which call for further philosophical investigations. The purpose of FOIS is to provide a forum for genuine interdisciplinary exchange in the spirit of a unified effort towards solving the problems of ontology, with an eye to both theoretical issues and concrete applications. This book contains a wide range of areas, all of which are important to the development of formal ontologies.

Book Topics and Methods in q Series

Download or read book Topics and Methods in q Series written by James Mc Laughlin and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the many aspects of the subject of basic hypergeometric series. The book essentially assumes no prior knowledge but eventually provides a comprehensive introduction to many important topics. After developing a treatment of historically important topics such as the q-binomial theorem, Heine's transformation, the Jacobi triple product identity, Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation formula, Bailey's 6-psi-6 summation formula and the Rogers-Fine identity, the book goes on to delve more deeply into important topics such as Bailey- and WP-Bailey pairs and chains, q-continued fractions, and mock theta functions. There are also chapters on other topics such as Lambert series and combinatorial proofs of basic hypergeometric identities. The book could serve as a textbook for the subject at the graduate level and as a textbook for a topic course at the undergraduate level (earlier chapters). It could also serve as a reference work for researchers in the area.

Book Renormalization and Effective Field Theory

Download or read book Renormalization and Effective Field Theory written by Kevin Costello and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum field theory has had a profound influence on mathematics, and on geometry in particular. However, the notorious difficulties of renormalization have made quantum field theory very inaccessible for mathematicians. This provides complete mathematical foundations for the theory of perturbative quantum field theory, based on Wilson's ideas of low-energy effective field theory and on the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism.

Book Geometry Spinors and Applications

Download or read book Geometry Spinors and Applications written by Donal J. Hurley and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-12-16 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a self-contained, comprehensive treatment of the tensor and spinor calculus of space-time manifolds with as few technicalities as correct treatment allows. Both the physical and geometrical motivation of all concepts are discussed, helping the reader to go through the technical details in a confident manner. Several physical theories are discussed and developed beyond standard treatment using results in the book. Both the traditional "index" and modern "coordinate-free" notations are used side-by-side in the book, making it accessible to beginner graduate students in mathematics and physics. The methods developed offer new insights into standard areas of physics, such as classical mechanics or electromagnetism, and takes readers to the frontiers of knowledge of spinor calculus.
