Book John Clare and Community

Download or read book John Clare and Community written by John Goodridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Clare (1793-1864) is one of the most sensitive poetic observers of the natural world. Born into a rural labouring family, he felt connected to two communities: his native village and the Romantic and earlier poets who inspired him. The first part of this study of Clare and community shows how Clare absorbed and responded to his reading of a selection of poets including Chatterton, Bloomfield, Gray and Keats, revealing just how serious the process of self-education was to his development. The second part shows how he combined this reading with the oral folk-culture he was steeped in, to create an unrivalled poetic record of a rural culture during the period of enclosure, and the painful transition to the modern world. In his lifelong engagement with rural and literary life, Clare understood the limitations as well as the strengths in communities, the pleasures as well as the horrors of isolation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Its First Publication In February 1897 Herford S The Age Of Wordsworth Has Remained And Continues To Remain A Basic Book On European Romanticism In General And The English Romanticism In Particular. The Second Edition Was Printed In The Same Year A Few Months Later, In November 1897, And The Third Edition (Revised) Was Brought Out In The Year 1899. Since Then The Book Has Been Reprinted Many Times, And That Is A Standing Testimony To The Immense Popularity And Usefulness Of The Book.In The Preface To The First Edition Herford Wrote In December 1895, About A Year Before The Actual Publication Of The Book: The Task Of Presenting This Vast And Complex Literature With Some Semblance Of Order And Unity Has Been No Light One. But The Enormous Popularity Of The Book For Over A Century Is A Glowing Testimony To His Remarkable Success In Performing The Arduous Task He Had Set Upon Himself. His Analysis Of Romanticism, Which Is The Organizing Conception Of This Book Is As Sharp As It Is Illuminating And Offers A Clear Idea Of The Various Phases Of European Romanticism, A Movement That Swept Over Europe From Roughly The Middle Of The Eighteenth Century To The Middle Of The Nineteenth Century. What Deserves Special Mention Is The Fact That All Along Herford Assiduously Maintains The Distinction Between Literary History And Biography. While The Book Is Indispensable For Any Student Of English Literature, The Students Of The History Of Thought And Culture Studies Will Also Find This Luminous Book Delightfully Readable And Interesting.

Book Selected Poems

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Robert Bloomfield and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite his literary successes-- publishing six volumes of poetry, a play, and a children's book-- Robert Bloomfield never escaped from poverty or anxiety and died early and in distress. This penniless history supports the description of Bloomfield as the most successful of the self-taught "peasant poets" of the Romantic period and underscores the incredible odds that any of his writings should be discovered at all. This selection of Bloomfield's poems was originally published in 1998 and was the first scholarly edition of his work. Bloomfield believed that his patron, Capel Lofft, had altered the text excessively, and so this edition has completely restored Bloomfield's own, much fresher text from the autobiographical manuscript at Harvard University. Revised and enlarged, this version also includes a selection of Bloomfield's prose prefaces and explanatory notes, a chronology of his life, and a list of further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your breath cradled my soul inside the candles flame I waited for you But you never came Not the way I thought or imagined Time passed with a cold brutality I gnawed my frost-bitten hands Until they bled again I thought I saw you in each and every shadow And I loved them all just a little bit Peering over the wall I tried to coax them over But none of them had a rope long enough And I wasn’t willing to throw one over
