Book Metabolic Disorders and Critically Ill Patients

Download or read book Metabolic Disorders and Critically Ill Patients written by Carole Ichai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-30 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to bring together the latest findings on metabolic disorders that are strongly implicated in various critically ill patients. Since the beginning of the 20th century, maintaining the "milieu intérieur" has been a major challenge for intensivists. In addition to considerable technological developments in intensive care units, important advances in our understanding of metabolic disorders observed in critically ill patients have been made during the 10 last years. Today, the intensivit can’t ignore these disorders when selecting the most appropriate treatment for an illness. Cellular metabolic abnormalities are responsible for systems and organ failures, so the modern approach of organ dysfunctions now includes prevention or treatment of such disorders. This book is a comprehensive tool, allowing the physician to understand, diagnose and treat these metabolic disorders. Water, electrolyte, acid-base, glycemic and endocrinologic problems, as well as metabolic abnormalities observed in renal, cerebral and hepatic failure are presented in different chapters. The last part of the book is devoted to modern nutritional concepts, the consequences of energy modifications, mitochondrial dysfunction, hypothermia, oxidative stress and ischemia reperfusion, which open the way for new therapies.

Book The Kidney and Body Fluids in Health and Disease

Download or read book The Kidney and Body Fluids in Health and Disease written by Saulo Klahr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was designed as a text for medical students, house officers, and even clinicians. It deals with the most common problems in nephrology, providing new insight into how to improve clinical skills. A comprehensive overview of renal physiology and electrolyte disorders lays the groundwork for a clear presentation of the pathophysiological principles that underlie these disorders and a step-by-step presentation of the mechanisms behind the signs and symptoms of kidney failure. The origins of this book can be traced to the teaching of a Renal Pathophysiology course at the Washington University School of Medicine, beginning in the mid-1960s. When changes in the medical school curriculum took place in the early 1970s, an effort was made to synthesize the minimum core curriculum for sophomore medical students, and the distillation of "essential material" to be covered in the area of renal pathophysiology led to the development of the first edition of a renal syllabus. This syllabus has been used in our department since 1974, and, following some of the recommendations and critiques of students and faculty, it has been entirely reworked many times to improve its effectiveness and value. This book is a direct extension of that syllabus, integrated with contri butions from faculty members in our Renal Division, and expanded to include a section on therapy in most chapters. It is our hope that this format will serve the needs of not only sophomore and senior medical students, but also house officers, nephrology fellows, and clinicians.

Book Neuropsychiatric Features of Medical Disorders

Download or read book Neuropsychiatric Features of Medical Disorders written by James W. Jefferson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Critical Issues in Psychiatry was conceived, there were several sub jects I considered to be of crucial importance in a series devoted to residents and clinicians in psychiatry, as well as to other mental health professionals. Of prominence was the pressing need for an in-depth and scholarly exam ination of the interface between medicine and psychiatry. I had been amazed to find that not a single book, to my mind, adequately addressed the psy chological symptoms and manifestations of both common and rare medical illness. It seemed to me that there was a need for a work which would achieve the following goals: First, it would assist in the differential diagnosis of functional psychiatric symptoms versus symptoms secondary to recog nized or unrecognized medical illness; second, it would elucidate the psy chological symptoms resulting from pharmacologic and other therapeutic interventions in medical illness; and third, it would examine the use of psychopharmacological agents in the presence of medical illness and the drugs used to treat that illness. Dr. Jefferson is Board Certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry, and both Drs. Jefferson and Marshall have extensive clinical experience from their many years of consultation/liaison work in psychiatry. Their experience and expertise have resulted in what I believe to be a monumental contri bution to the literature.
