Book excerpt: Solar energy offers a large potential as a source of energy and in light of financial and ethical reasons, people are looking to harvest it for their energy needs. The conversion of solar energy to electricity is performed by solar cells. There exists an operating point associated with solar cells at which the power generated is maximized at any given point in time. A maximum power point tracker (MPPT) is required to track this maximum power operating point (MPOP). A wide range of systems exists to meet this purpose. This thesis explores the use of a single-phase controlled rectifier, with back stepping control to track the maximum power from a string of solar arrays. This controller tracks the MPOP using a circuit topology that has been under investigation within the literature and was simulated using MA TLAB/Simulink. Simulation results showed that the designed converter and control strategy could transfer power from a string of solar arrays to the grid by efficiently tracking the MPOP.

Every photovoltaic (PV) array has an optimum operating point, called the maximum power point, which varies depending on cell temperature, the insolation level and array voltage. The function of MPPT is needed to operate the PV array at its maximum power point. The design of a Maximum Peak Power Tracking (MPPT) is proposed utilizing a boost-converter topology. Solar panel voltage and current are continuously monitored by a closed-loop microprocessor based control system, and the duty cycle of the boost converter continuously adjusted to extract maximum power. The design consists of a PV array, DC-DC Boost converters (also known as step-up converters) and a control section that uses the PIC16F877A microcontroller. The control section obtains the information from the PV array through microcontroller's Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) ports and hence to perform )the pulse width modulation (PWM) to the converter through its Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) ports. Many such algorithms have been proposed. However, one particular algorithm, the perturb-and-observe (P&O) method, claimed by many in the literature to be inferior to others, continues to be by far the most widely used method in commercial PV MPPT's.

This method uses a fuzzy logic controller applied to a DC-DC converter device. The different steps of the design of this controller are presented together with its simulation. The PV system that I chose to simulate to apply my techniques on it is stand-alone PV water pumping system. Results of this simulation are compared to those obtained by the system without MPPT. They show that the system with MPPT using fuzzy logic controller increase the efficiency of energy production from PV.

The main objective of this thesis is to track the maximum power point from a solar panel by using a DC bus and to notice the changes in the voltage, current and power of the solar panel with the change in the irradiation level. The solar panel is designed by considering the standard current and voltage conditions. A maximum power point tracking algorithm is designed in a MATLAB code and the output gives the track of the maximum power point reached by the system which is given as a feed back to the solar panel by using DC bus and extract the maximum power out of the solar panel. The DC bus used in this system acts as an infinite load which accepts the maximum ranges in order to get the maximum power. For different irradiation levels, there will be a change in the solar panel's current, power and voltage and the maximum power point as well. These changes in power and current of the solar panel with respect to the voltage are observed by simulation for different irradiation levels and the maximum power point for different conditions are tracked.

Book excerpt: A single-axis Sun tracker to follow the position of the sun was designed and constructed and an experimental investigation was carried out on photovoltaic power output through the single axis automatic controlled solar tracker. This paper presents the design of an Automatic Solar tracking system to track Solar PV Panel according to the direction of beam propagation of Sun s radiation. The entire tracking system consists of sensor with ADC, control circuits to motor drive with control software, and bearing with supports and mountings. The controlling motion for PV panel has been provided by discrete motion of the motor. Microcontrollers with ADC and line driver are used in the control circuits, which generate pulses according to software feedback for rotation of the motor drive. The amount of receivable solar insulation through tracking is considered as 100% at all latitude and energy surplus becomes about 57% without atmospheric influences. In case of seasonal changes of the Sun s position, it needs not to change hardware & software. Considering all above aspects of this tracking system it can be concluded that, it is a flexible tracking system with least cost & high efficiency.
