Book Human Happiness and the Pursuit of Maximization

Download or read book Human Happiness and the Pursuit of Maximization written by Hilke Brockmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tests the critical potential of happiness research to evaluate contemporary high-performance societies. These societies, defined as affluent capitalist societies, emphasize competition and success both institutionally and culturally. Growing affluence improves life in many ways, for a large number of people. We lead longer, safer, and more comfortable lives than previous generations. But we also live faster, and are competition-toughened, like top athletes. As a result, we suspect limits and detect downsides of our high-speed lives. The ubiquitous maximization principle opens up a systematic gateway to the pleasures and pains of contemporary life. Using happiness as a reference point, this book explores the philosophical and empirical limits of the maximization rule. It considers the answer to questions such as: Precisely, why did the idea of (economic) maximization gain so much ground in our Western way of thinking? When, and in which life domains, does maximization work, when does it fail? When do qualities and when do quantities matter? Does maximization yield a different (un)happiness dividend in different species, cultures, and societies?

Book Aspiration Based Decision Support Systems

Download or read book Aspiration Based Decision Support Systems written by Andrzej Lewandowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not easy to summarize -even in a volume -the results of a scientific study con ducted by circa 30 researchers, in four different research institutions, though cooperating between them and jointly with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, but working part-time, sponsored not only by IIASA's national currency funds, but also by several other research grants in Poland. The aims of this cooperative study were de fined broadly by its title Theory, Software and Testing Examples for Decision Support Systems. The focusing theme was the methodology of decision analysis and support related to the principle of reference point optimization (developed by the editors of this volume and called also variously: aspiration-led decision support, quasi-satisfying framework of rationality, DIDAS methodology etc. ). This focusing theme motivated extensive theoretical research - from basic methodological issues of decision analysis, through various results in mathematical programming (in the fields of large scale and stochastic optimization, nondifferentiable optimization, cooperative game theory) mo tivated and needed because of this theme, through methodological issues related to software development to issues resulting from testing and applications. We could not include in this volume all papers -theoretical, methodological, appiied, software manu als and documentation -written during this cooperative study.

Book Standards and Schooling in the United States 3 volumes

Download or read book Standards and Schooling in the United States 3 volumes written by Joe L. Kincheloe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-12-07 with total page 1223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this definitive, three-volume set, top scholars illuminate the historical, social, cultural, political, administrative, psychological, and philosophical issues behind the standards debate. The nation's demand for more sophisticated knowledge workers who can easily access information using computers requires that they be able to interpret that information, judge and assess it, and give it meaning. In short, students must be taught how to think. Is education as it now exists in the United States a mere memorization and regurgitation of facts? If so, is this a pseudo-education? In this three volume encyclopedia, a 100 page introductory overview and 41 essays by top scholars present a new vision of education—and educational rigor—in a variety of classroom contexts and subject areas. Essays cover the most important issues in education today: the purpose of education, regulating teachers, school accreditation, testing, nontraditional schools, bilingual education, justice and education, the politics of education, learning theory and cognition, and opposition to standards and more. The encyclopedia also includes a historical timeline of educational reform and an annotated bibliography.
