Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At first listen, music is conspicuously absent from Somaliland's public soundscapes. The lingering effects of a war that devastated the artistic community and the increasing presence of Salafist groups, which see music as incompatible with Islamic principles, have muted musical practice. Nonetheless, as Christina Woolner undertook research in postwar peacebuilding in Somaliland's capital, Hargeysa, she continually heard snippets of songs. Many of these, she learned, were about love. In a time and region riddled with precarity, hees jacayl permits singers to "sing from the heart," a mode of voicing songs that Woolner calls envocalization, which allows the possibility of dareen-wadaang (feeling sharing). Despite their intense intimacy, that is, hees jacayl transcend the connection between the lover and the beloved, becoming also, perhaps paradoxically, an outward-facing, unifying force that powerfully draws together those "suffering" from love, poets, composers, singers, and listeners, in both private and public spaces. Taking us from 1950s recordings preserved on dusty cassettes to contemporary, often improvisatory performances in a scandalous venue where the author herself eventually performs, Woolner offers an understanding of love songs across time and space that opens new realms of possibility, for relating to others and for local reconciliation, which are otherwise closed off by overwhelming conditions of precarity"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So At One With You is a groundbreaking anthology of the last fifty years of Somali poetry, and marks ten years of collaboration between Kayd Somali Arts and Culture and the Poetry Translation Centre. The anthology celebrates the primary medium for public debate in this 'nation of poets', where audiences in their hundreds gather to listen to an intricate, virtuosic artform that speaks directly to them about the great issues of their time. As the title - taken from the work of Maxamed Ibraahin Warsame "Hadraawi" - suggests, in Somali literature the poet is utterly at one with their listener sharing values and aesthetics in an intimate manner that offers food for thought to English-speaking writers, readers, and critics. The present selection brings together eighteen key poets from across the generations, and combines tender love poetry and pastoral idyll with scathing attacks on corruption and hypocrisy, as well as social satire on life in the cities of the Horn of Africa and across the globe. This is a world poetry, both in its imaginative reach and in its ability to speak to the debates we all face in a time of global crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists comes The Orchard of Lost Souls, a stunning novel illuminating Somalia's tragic civil war. It is 1987 and Hargeisa waits. Whispers of revolution travel on the dry winds, but still the dictatorship remains secure. Soon, through the eyes of three women, we will see Somalia fall. Nine-year-old Deqo has left the vast refugee camp where she was born, lured to the city by the promise of her first pair of shoes. Kawsar, a solitary widow, is trapped in her little house with its garden clawed from the desert, confined to her bed after a savage beating in the local police station. Filsan, a young female soldier, has moved from Mogadishu to suppress the rebellion growing in the north. As the country is unraveled by a civil war that will shock the world, the fates of these three women are twisted irrevocably together. Nadifa Mohamed was born in Hargeisa and was exiled before the outbreak of war. In The Orchard of Lost Souls, she returns to Hargeisa in her imagination. Intimate, frank, brimming with beauty and fierce love, this novel is an unforgettable account of ordinary lives lived in extraordinary times.

Book Becoming Somaliland

Download or read book Becoming Somaliland written by Mark Bradbury and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1991, the leaders of the Somali National Movement and elders of the northern Somali clans proclaimed the new Republic of Somaliland. Since then, in contrast to the complete collapse of Somalia, Somaliland has successfully managed a process of reconciliation, demobilization, and restoration of law and order. They have held three successful democratic elections and the capital, Hargeysa, has become an active international trading center. Despite this display of good governance in Africa, Somaliland has yet to be recognized by the international community. International efforts have been directed toward the reunification of Somalia, which has failed, even after 14 peace conferences and international military intervention. Warlords continue to overrun and destabilize southern Somalia while Somaliland works to build peace, stability, and democracy. How long will it be before this African success story achieves the recognition it deserves?" -- Product description.

Book Papers from the Linguistics Workshop

Download or read book Papers from the Linguistics Workshop written by Orwin, Martin and published by Ponte Invisible (Redsea Cultural Foundation). This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book are the result of the First Linguistics Workshop: Somali Language and Literature at the Hargeysa Cultural Centre in December 2015. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate the sharing of current work among scholars in the field of Somali language studies through presentation of their ongoing projects. This also allowed current work to be opened to a wider audience and for students, journalists and writers to hear about some of the issues which are of current interest in Somali language studies. There was a deliberate attempt to draw people engaged in both more strictly linguistic matters together with those whose interests are more as practitioners with language, such as local writers and journalists, and also to include those whose primary focus is literature. This led to a diverse range of both presentations and opinions on those presentations, which is represented also in this volume. The views on any matter are those of the individual authors and readers are left to determine for themselves to what extent they agree or disagree with points made. The more strictly linguistic papers include presentations on aspects of Somali phonology, morphology and syntax. Sociolinguistics is also represented as is recent work on lexicography and the use of information technology in Somali language studies. There are two papers which consider literature from different perspectives.

Book The Boy in the Dress

Book excerpt: On a balmy Townsville night in 1944, a young serviceman, Warwick Meale, is found murdered. The army and police do not, or will not, conduct a proper investigation and history forgets the killer - until now. Nearly eighty years on, Warwick's descendant Jonathan Butler dusts off the case and chases the leads that were there all along. The Boy in the Dress exhumes secrets of life on the home front during World War II, where tensions between soldiers boiled over, new expressions of sexuality flourished and the threat of invasion catapulted the status quo into disarray. The truth of this family legend, and this little-known chapter in Australian military history, is more complex and engrossing than anyone could have imagined.
