Inoltre scoprì che l’energia di qualunque radiazione è un multiplo del prodotto della sua frequenza per una costante, poi detta costante di Planck, che con la velocità della luce e la costante di gravitazione è tra i pilastri fondamentali della fisica. Nel 1918 gli fu assegnato il premio Nobel, per il contributo dato allo sviluppo della fisica attraverso la scoperta dei quanti di energia. A lui è stata intitolata la Società Max Planck, ente pubblico tedesco di fama mondiale per la ricerca scientifica e tecnologica.
