Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Incorrigibles and Innocents: Constructions of Childhood and Citizenship in Progressive Era Comic Strips addresses this gap in scholarship, serving as the first sustained examination of the ways childhood was depicted and theorized in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century comic strips. By drawing from and building on histories and theories of childhood, comics and Progressive Era conceptualizations of citizenship and nationhood, Lara Saguisag demonstrates that child characters in comic strips reinforced and complicated notions of who could claim membership in a modernizing, expanding nation"--

Book Handbook of Children Culture and Violence

Download or read book Handbook of Children Culture and Violence written by Nancy E. Dowd and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2006 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each chapter contains recommendations for legislators, policy makers, researchers, and families. This book should be on the desk, and minds, of legislators, attorneys, social workers and other mental health professionals who encounter and wish to ameliorate the effects of violence in the lives of their young constituents, clients, and patients." -JOURNAL OF CHILD AND FAMILY STUDIESQuestions relating to violence and children surround us in the media: should V-chips be placed in every television set? How can we prevent another Columbine school shooting from occurring? How should pornography on the internet be regulated? The Handbook of Children, Culture and Violence addresses these questions and more, providing a comprehensive, interdisciplinary examination of childhood violence that considers children as both consumers and perpetrators of violence, as well as victims of it. The Handbook offers much-needed empirical evidence that will help inform debate about these important policy decisions. Moreover, it is the first single volume to consider situations when children are responsible for violence, rather than focusing exclusively on occasions when they are victimized. Providing the first comprehensive overview of current research in the field, the editors have brought together the work of a group of prominent scholars whose work is united by a common concern for the impact of violence on the lives of children. The Handbook of Children, Culture and Violence is poised to become the ultimate resource and reference work on children and violence for researchers, teachers, and students of psychology, human development and family studies, law, communications, education, sociology, and political science/ public policy. It will also appeal to policymakers, media professionals, and special interest groups concerned with reducing violence in children's lives. Law firms specializing in family law, as well as think tanks, will also be interested in the Handbook.

Book Centenary Reflections on Mark Twain s No 44 the Mysterious Stranger

Download or read book Centenary Reflections on Mark Twain s No 44 the Mysterious Stranger written by Joseph Csicsila and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first book on No. 44 in thirty years, thirteen especially commissioned essays by some of today's most accomplished Twain scholars cover an array of topics, from domesticity and transnationalism to race and religion, and reflect a variety of scholarly and theoretical approaches to the work. This far-reaching collection considers the status of No. 44 within Twain's oeuvre as they offer cogent insights into such broad topics as cross-culturalism, pain and redemption, philosophical paradox, and comparative studies of the "Mysterious Stranger" manuscripts. All of these essays attest to the importance of this late work in Twain's canon, whether considering how Twain's efforts at truth-telling are premeditated and shaped by his own experiences, tracing the biblical and religious influences that resonate in No. 44, or exploring the text's psychological dimensions. Several address its importance as a culminating work in which Twain's seemingly disjointed story lines coalesce in meaningful, albeit not always satisfactory, ways. An afterword by Alan Gribben traces the critical history of the "Mysterious Stranger" manuscripts and the contributions of previous critics. A wide-ranging critical introduction and a comprehensive bibliography on the last century of scholarship bracket the contributions. Close inspection of this multidimensional novel shows how Twain evolved as a self-conscious thinker and humorist--and that he was a more conscious artist throughout his career than has been previously thought. Centenary Reflections deepens our understanding of one of Twain's most misunderstood texts, confirming that the author of No. 44 was a pursuer of an elusive truth that was often as mysterious a stranger as Twain himself.

Book John W Thompson

Download or read book John W Thompson written by Paul Weindling and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John W. Thompson: Psychiatrist in the Shadow of the Holocaust is the biography of a doctor whose revulsion at Nazi human experiments prompted him to seek a humane basis for physician-patient relations. As a military-scientific intelligence officer in 1945, Thompson was the first to name "medical war crimes" as a category for prosecution. His investigations laid the groundwork for the Nuremberg medical trials and for the novel idea of "informed consent." Yet, Thompson has remained a little-known figure, despite his many scientific, literary, and religious connections. This book traces Thompson's life from his birth in Mexico, through his studies at Stanford, Edinburgh, and Harvard, and his service in the Canadian Air Force. It reconstructs his therapeutic work with Unesco in Germany and his time as a Civil Rights activist in New York, where he developed his concept of holistic medicine. Thompson was close to authors like Auden and Spender and inspirational religious figures like Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche. He drew on ideas of Freud, Jung, and Buber. The philosophical and religious dimensions of Thompson's response to Holocaust victims' suffering are key to this study, which cites accounts of psychiatrists, students and patients who knew Thompson personally, war crimes prosecution records, and unpublished personal papers. Paul Weindling is Wellcome Trust Research Professor at the Centre for Health, Medicine and Society: Past and Present, Oxford Brookes University, UK.

Book Acoustics Information and Communication

Download or read book Acoustics Information and Communication written by Ning Xiang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life and scientific legacy of Manfred Schroeder through personal reflections, scientific essays and Schroeder’s own memoirs. Reflecting the wide range of Schroeder’s activities, the first part of the book contains thirteen articles written by his colleagues and former students. Topics discussed include his early, pioneering contributions to the understanding of statistical room acoustics and to the measurement of reverberation time; his introduction of digital signal processing methods into acoustics; his use of ray tracing methods to study sound decay in rooms and his achievements in echo and feedback suppression and in noise reduction. Other chapters cover his seminal research in speech processing including the use of predictive coding to reduce audio bandwidth which led to various code-excited linear prediction schemes, today used extensively for speech coding. Several chapters discuss Schroeder’s work in low-peak factor signals, number theory, and maximum-length sequences with key applications in hearing research, diffraction gratings, artificial reverberators and de-correlation techniques for enhancing subjective envelopment in surround sound. In style, the articles range from truly scientific to conversationally personal. In all contributions, the relationship between the current research presented and Manfred Schroeder’s own fields of interest is, in general, evident. The second part of the book consists of Schroeder’s own memoirs, written over the final decade of his life. These recollections shed light on many aspects not only of Schroeder’s life but also on that of many of his colleagues, friends and contemporaries. They portray political, social and scientific events over a period that extends from pre-war to the present. These memoirs, written in an inimitable and witty style, are full of information, entertaining and fun to read, providing key insight into the life and work of one of the greatest acousticians of the 20th century.

Book Herbs and Savory Seeds

Download or read book Herbs and Savory Seeds written by Rosetta E. Clarkson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is for anyone interested in herbs and gardening. It is a gathering of herb, plant and gardening lore from the ages, from old herbals and gardening books and recipe books and treatises on plants and chronicles and literary works. It also contains much original, up-to-date information by the author, who was the founder of 'The Herb Journal' and devoted a large part of her life to the study of herbs. It talks about the magic of fragrances ; about herbs that masquerade as flowers ; about walls and wattles -- the garden as peaceful enclosure ; about fancy gardens -- knots and parterres, mazes and labyrinths ; about simples -- herbs used for their single medicinal properties ; about the "doctrine of signatures," which bases cures on similarities between parts of plants and parts of the body ; about flower and herb symbolism and the language of herbs ; about herbs cultivated for their scent and herbs cultivated for culinary purposes ; about herbs for pickling and pastries ; about vegetable herbs and the uses of savory seeds. It tells how and when to plant, harvest and dry herbs ; how to make a potpourri for its cheerful scent and health-giving properties ; and a pomander to be worn around the neck or to keep away moths. At the end is a list of noteworthy herbs and tables of herb uses, herb symbolisms, herb teas, herbs for color and the history of herbs from ancient times to present day industrial uses. Aside from its store of useful information, this book is a pleasure to have and to read. It is beautifully illustrated from the old herbals and gardening books. It skillfully blends knowledge, remembrance and romance ; half-forgotten ideas and uses that can readily be revived ; gardening arts ; literary references and recipes for foods, teas and medicines into a potpourri that is sure to delight anyone who takes pleasure in growing things."--
