Book Earl The Pearl Watson

Download or read book Earl The Pearl Watson written by Earl Watson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL Built between 1923 and 1925, the famous Hollywood Hotel Knickerbocker was in its early days, a mainstay in the life of Hollywood’s most glorious celebrities. But, looking at this aging hotel on Ivar Avenue, you probably wouldn’t guess that it had much of a Hollywood history. Similarly, looking at Earl Watson, an unassuming man, residing in Fresno, California, you probably wouldn’t guess that he too, was a part of Hollywood’s golden history. But, you’d be dead wrong. Hollywood’s elite came to the Knickerbocker and was greeted by the ever-smiling Earl Watson. From 1946 to 1962, Watson worked as a doorman at the famed hotel. Where most people only dream of seeing such celebrities as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Earl Watson rubbed elbows with them. Today, the Hotel Knickerbocker is an apartment house for senior citizens, but back in the 1920s, it was in the heart of Hollywood and played a key role in Tinsel town’s history. The Hotel was closed and the rooms converted to apartments in 1971. In 1991, the hotel bar was re-opened as the “All Star Theatre Cafe And Speakeasy,” a coffee house nestled in the plush atmosphere of a glamorous past. And although the entrance to the hotel is closed to the public, you can still look through the glassed doors and imagine the splendor and magic that was the Knickerbocker. Just as the All Star Theatre Café and Speakeasy allows the spectator to revisit Hollywood’s elegant past, Earl Watson, doorman to the stars, can bring the past to life with his tales of hobnobbing with the Hollywood elite. His home in Fresno California is a museum filled with memorabilia of those days in Hollywood. But there is much more to Earl Watson, the man, who grew up in Chicago’s South Side during the depression years. As a young man, he served proudly with the Armed Forces in Europe and fought in the fiercest battles of the war, first at Normandy and then in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Rhine River. There is more to this modest gentleman from Chicago than a story about the past vestiges of the Knickerbocker and the famous people who lived there. It is the story of lives interwoven in the tapestry of Hollywood’s grandeur as seen and experienced by the always-smiling Earl of the Knickerbocker Hotel. Just ask E Entertainment, the worldwide syndicated television show out of Hollywood. They wanted to do a piece about Hollywood and the old Knickerbocker Hotel. They went to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and were referred to Johnny Grant, who had been the mayor of Hollywood for many years. When they contacted Johnny Grant, he told them that they should call “Earl Watson” because he was there in that era. They contacted Earl and set up an interview in his home in Fresno, California. They spent a couple of hours with Earl and collected 55 years of history. Writers who did not know the hotel or the employees have written many untrue stories about the Hotel over the years.... but Earl Watson lived it.

Book excerpt: A USA Today bestseller and book club favorite! College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran--and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder. As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Joe, along with his skeptical female neighbor, throws himself into uncovering the truth, but he is hamstrung in his efforts by having to deal with his dangerously dysfunctional mother, the guilt of leaving his autistic brother vulnerable, and a haunting childhood memory. Thread by thread, Joe unravels the tapestry of Carl’s conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before it’s too late to escape the fallout?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Howard lived in Chicago and in the San Francisco Bay Area, two areas with enthusiastic football fans. While teaching history, his love for sports and an avid season ticket holder led him to spend several years coaching basketball and football. Like many fans he thought bad calls changed the outcome of some games albeit few in number. All sports rely on the integrity of referees and with a touch of imagination came the thought of what would happen if any one referee purposely overlooked infractions or intentionally made bad calls. With retirement came the story: Questionable Calls.

However, along with The Yearling and Reap the Wild Wind and Hello, Frisco, Hello, I've also included a few surprises. Book excerpt: A historical study of the Federal Music Project (FMP) investigates the paradoxical mission of employing popular musicians during the depression and "raising" musical tastes by emphasizing European classical traditions. Bindas (history, Kent State U.) reveals the obvious tensions between FMP leadership and its musicians, particularly the racial and ethnic segregation perpetuated by its policies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, James D. Hart's The Oxford Companion to American Literature has been an unparalleled guide to America's literary culture, providing one of the finest resources to this country's rich history of great writers. Now this acclaimed work has been completely revised and updated to reflect current developments in the world of American letters. For the sixth edition, editors James D. Hart and Phillip Leininger have updated the Companion in light of what has happened in American literature since 1982. To this end, they have revised the entries on such established authors as Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, and Joyce Carol Oates, and they have added more than 180 new entries on novelists (T. Coraghessan Boyle, Tim O'Brien, Louise Erdrich, Don De Lillo), poets (Rita Dove, Weldon Kees), playwrights (Wendy Wasserstein, August Wilson), popular writers (Stephen King, Louis L'Amour), historians (James M. McPherson, David Herbert Donald, William Manchester), naturalists (Aldo Leopold, Edward Abbey), and literary critics (Camille Paglia, Richard Ellmann). In addition, the Companion boasts more women's, African-American, and ethnic voices, with new entries on such luminaries as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, M.F.K. Fisher, William Least Heat-Moon, Ursula Le Guin, and Oscar Hijuelos, among many others. These additions represent only some of the revisions for the new edition. Of course, the basic qualities of the Companion that readers have grown to know and love over the years are as superb as ever. With over 5,000 total entries, The Oxford Companion to American Literature reflects a dynamic balance between past and contemporary literature, surveying virtually every aspect of our national literature, from the Pulitzer Prize to pulp fiction, and from Walt Whitman to William F. Buckley, Jr. There are over 2,000 biographical profiles of important American authors (with information regarding their styles, subjects, and major works) and influential foreign writers as well as other figures who have been important in the nation's social and cultural history. There are more than 1,100 full summaries of important American novels, stories, essays, poems (with verse form noted), plays, biographies and autobiographies, tracts, narratives, and histories. The new edition provides historical background and astute commentary on literary schools and movements, literary awards, magazines, newspapers, and a wide variety of other matters directly related to writing in America. Finally, the book is thoroughly cross-referenced and features an extensive and fully updated index of literary and social history.Ranging from Captain John Smith to John Updike, and from Anne Bradstreet to Anne Rice, the sixth edition of The Oxford Companion to American Literature is up to date, accurate, and comprehensive, a delight for both the casual browser and the serious student.
