Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second of two volumes on Mauser rifles, this full-color, illustrated book presents the design, manufacturing, development, and combat use of the various models from 1918 through World War II. Post-WWI manufacturers defined the characteristics of a future German regulation rifle derived from the WWI-era Gewehr 98. After the Nazi accession of the German government, the improved version of the Gewehr 98 was adopted in 1934 under the designation "K98k." This book presents the various models of this famous rifle, as well as the changes made to its manufacture during the Second World War. Details include close-up views of markings, as well as a serial numbers list, and a visual breakdown of the weapons. Accessories such as ammunition, ammo pouches, bayonets, magazines, scopes, and cleaning kits are featured throughout the book, as are rarely seen combat-related uniform and equipment items.

Book The Hand Gun Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Walter
  • Publisher : Grub Street Publishers
  • Release : 2008-06-30
  • ISBN : 1783469749
  • Pages : 518 pages

Download or read book The Hand Gun Story written by John Walter and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A firearms expert “traces the history of the ‘one hand gun’ from its 14th century origins . . . surveying changing technology, techniques, and design” (Midwest Book Review). Ideally suited for both attack and self-defense, handguns have gotten smaller and deadlier. But the earliest pistols had a tendency to misfire. This was cured by the cap-lock, which proved a massive success in the American Civil War, with hundreds of thousands of cap-lock revolvers used on each side. Self-contained metal-case cartridges were to bring a fundamental change to handgun design: not only by allowing the introduction of revolvers that ejected automatically or were easily reloaded, but also by paving the way for the automatic pistol. World War I provided the handgun with a proving ground. At the end of the hostilities, with so much surplus weaponry, work on the handgun could have ceased; instead, a new developmental phase was begun by the nations that had emerged from the crumbling Imperial empires. During World War II, the efficiency of well-established designs was confirmed and new designs, such as the Walther P. 38, showed their potential. The emergence of the submachine-gun in 1945 reduced the status of the handgun—but only temporarily. The need for efficient self-defense shows no signs of lessening; and the rise in shooting for sport, particularly with the revolver, has sharpened the quest for efficiency. The never ending search for advanced production techniques shows that the handgun has as much a future in the twenty-first century as it had in the heyday of the Wild West, or in the trenches of Passchendaele.

Book My Hundred Guns

Download or read book My Hundred Guns written by Jason Jones and published by L&V Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-11 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In My Hundred Guns, Jason Jones takes us on a highly personal journey through the world of firearms, concentrating on the classic era of military and civilian rifles, shotguns, and handguns. With his own rich collection as a touchstone (spoiler: it’s more like 150 guns), Jones explores the history and evolution of modern firearms, and the pleasures of owning, restoring, maintaining, and recreationally shooting them. Mauser, Lee-Enfield, Colt, Browning, Garand, Tokarev, Mannlicher, Schmidt-Rubin, Carcano, Savage, Glock, Kel-Tec … the major names and designs are touched on in this witty, well-informed, somewhat off-kilter pilgrimage. Jones also examines the guiding ideals of gun design and manufacture; the “Zen of firearms” and their maintenance; “gun guys & gals”; guns as pop-culture icons; and contemporary gun-control debates. Illustrated with over 100 images, My Hundred Guns features a wide range of resources, from books and quotes about firearms, to today’s online communities of gun aficionados. Links throughout take readers to online videos from “Lyudmila & Vasily’s Shooting Adventures,” wherein the author and his range companion, Sherry, shoot the classics for your viewing pleasure. My Hundred Guns is a unique, colorful, and entertaining account of the world of modern firearms, and one person’s (peaceful) obsession with them. Jason Jones is a writer, educator, and photographer based in western Canada.

Book The Broomhandle Mauser

Download or read book The Broomhandle Mauser written by Jonathan Ferguson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when most handguns were limited to six rounds, the ten-shot Mauser caught the attention of the world for its unprecedented firepower and formidable high-velocity 7.63×25mm cartridge. This saw its ultimate expression in the first-ever select-fire handgun – the 'Schnellfeuer' machine pistol, fed by a detachable magazine and offering both full-automatic and single-shot modes. The C 96 was the first semi-automatic pistol to see combat, arming both sides in the Second Anglo-Boer War, and seeing service with the German, Russian, Chinese and other militaries. Widely purchased commercially, it was carried by none other than Winston Churchill in the Sudan and South Africa, became prized by the Irish Republican Army and Soviet revolutionaries, and even armed Han Solo in the 'Star Wars' movies. Featuring full-colour artwork and an array of revealing photographs, this is the engrossing story of the C 96 Broomhandle Mauser, the ground-breaking semi-automatic pistol that armed a generation of military personnel, adventurers and revolutionaries at the turn of the 20th century.
