The story of love, chivalry, and political intrigue is told in this novel, which is set in mediaeval England during Richard II's reign. The main character of the tale is Robin Hood, who is portrayed as a nobleman by the name of Robin Fitzooth. After falling in love with the stunning Lady Rosamund de la Ford, Robin and her romance encounters many obstacles as they deal with political upheaval and power battles. At first, Lady Rosamund is engaged to the nasty and conceited knight Sir Pertolepe, but Robin has her heart. Robin and Lady Rosamund become caught in a web of political intrigues, betrayals, and tensions as they work through the difficulties of their forbidden love. The conflict between one's own desires and social standards, as well as themes of honor and loyalty, are all explored in the book. Hewlett's story expertly blends romance, adventure, and historical fiction aspects to produce a realistic picture of mediaeval England. "The Forest Lovers" is praised for its beautiful language, thorough historical background, and classic message of love overcoming hardship. The book offers a distinctive perspective on the people and incidents that have become legendary in English culture, all the while capturing the spirit of the Robin Hood legend.

Book excerpt: Maurice Hewlett (1861-1923) was an English historical novelist, poet and essayist. Born in Weybridge, he was educated at the London International College, Isleworth, and called to the bar in 1891 but gave up the law after the success of his historical novel The Forest Lovers published in 1898. From 1896-1901 he was Keeper of Lands, Revenues, Records and Enrolments, a government post as adviser on matters of medieval law. He married Hilda Beatrice Herbert in 1888, with whom he had a son and a daughter, but they separated in 1914 partly due to Hilda's increasing interest in aviation. In 1911 she became the first woman in the UK to gain a pilot's licence. Hewlett settled in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire, and had a wide circle of friends in the literary world, including Ezra Pound and J M Barrie, and his historical novels proved both popular and influential. T E Lawrence professed The Life and Death of Richard Yea-and-Nay, a 1900 work about Richard the Lionhart, to be one of his favourite books, and Ford Madox Ford claimed that The Queen's Quair (1904) had taught him a lot and influenced his own historical trilogy, The Fifth Queen, about Catherine Howard. The Queen's Quair is an historical romance which offers an in-depth portrayal of the tragic life of Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587).

Book The Historical Romance

Download or read book The Historical Romance written by Helen Hughes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historical Romance explores the ways in which romance authors seek to represent our fantasies of life in the past. Examining how the cut-and-thrust swashbucklers of the 1930s gave way to female-orientated romances, Helen Hughes takes a comprehensive look at how romance authors have dealt with the turbulent question of female independence, and how traditional attitudes towards love, marriage and women's sexuality have been approached in more recent texts. Hughes also charts the ways in which the marketing of romance has developed, with the eventual explosion of the mass market and the blockbusting family sagas of the eighties. The Historical Romance unravels the formulaic and mythical nature of historical romance to provide a fascinating study of this highly popular genre.
