Book Muslims against the Muslim League

Download or read book Muslims against the Muslim League written by Ali Usman Qasmi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of the Muslim League and its idea of Pakistan has been measured in terms of its success in achieving the goal of a sovereign state in the Muslim majority regions of North West and North East India. It led to an oversight of Muslim leaders and organizations which were opposed to this demand, predicating their opposition to the League on its understanding of the history and ideological content of the Muslim nation. This volume takes stock of multiple narratives about Muslim identity formation in the context of debates about partition, historicizes those narratives, and reads them in the light of the larger political milieu of the period. Focusing on the critiques of the Muslim League, its concept of the Muslim nation, and the political settlement demanded on its behalf, it studies how the movement for Pakistan inspired a contentious, influential conversation on the definition of the Muslim nation.

Book The Muslims of British India

Download or read book The Muslims of British India written by Hardy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1972-12-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Hardy has attempted a general history of British India's Muslims with a deeper perspective. He shows how the interplay of memories of past Muslim supremacy, Islamic religious aspirations and modern Muslim social and economic anxieties with the political needs of the alien ruling power gradually fostered a separate Muslim politics. Dr Hardy argues (contrary to the usual view) that Muslims were able to take political initiatives because, in the region of modern Uttar Pradesh, British rule before 1857 and even the events of the Mutiny and Rebellion of 1857-8 had not been economically disastrous for most of them. He stresses the force of religion in the growth of Muslim political separatism, showing how the 'modernists' kept the conversation among Muslims within Islamic postulates and underlining the role of the traditional scholars in heightening popular religious feeling. Regarding any sense of Muslim political unity and nationhood as an outcome of the period of British rule, Dr Hardy shows the limitations and frailty of that unity and nationhood by 1947.

Book Living with Religious Diversity

Download or read book Living with Religious Diversity written by Sonia Sikka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking beyond exclusively state-oriented solutions to the management of religious diversity, this book explores ways of fostering respectful, non-violent and welcoming social relations among religious communities. It examines the question of how to balance religious diversity, individual rights and freedoms with a common national identity and moral consensus. The essays discuss the interface between state and civil society in ‘secular’ countries and look at case studies from the the West and India. They study themes such as religious education, religious diversity, pluralism, inter-religious relations and exchanges, dalits and religion, and issues arising from the lived experience of religious diversity in various countries. The volume asserts that if religious violence crosses borders, so do ideas about how to live together peacefully, theological reflection on pluralism, and lived practices of friendship across the boundaries of religious identity-groupings. Bringing together interdisciplinary scholarship from across the world, the book will interest scholars and students of philosophy, religious studies, political science, sociology and history.

This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a TranslaTion of Shaykh Husain Ahmad Madani’s autobiography, highlighting the colonial practices that reduced Indians to economic poverty, erasing their culture and corrupting their faith. It shows the jihad of Shaykh Madani, free from the Eurocentric paradigm of vested interest and hierarchy. It explains why the British imprisoned him in Malta, for two years in Sabarmati prison with hard labour and in Nene Jail, Allahabad. The book also brings forward the role of prominent individuals and institutes in ending the British colonialism of India. It traces the resistance movement from the foundation of Darul-Uloom Deoband by Shaykh Qasim Nanotwi and Shaykh Rashid Aḥmad Gangohi after the 1857 British occupation of Delhi. It also includes the role of Shaykh Sayyid Aḥmad Shaheed and Shaykh al-Hind Mahmud Hasan. This book is a small way of acknowledging his contribution and challenging nationalist and exclusivist historians who have written out the Muslims’ efforts in liberating India. The book will be helpful to students and researchers across colleges, universities and Darul Ulooms. More than that, it will be useful to anyone who wants to learn about the anti-colonial movement in India.
