Book Maturation of Western Larch Cones and Seeds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maturation of Western Larch Cones and Seeds Classic Reprint written by Raymond C Shearer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maturation of Western Larch Cones and Seeds Weekly cone collections from late July through September 1964 and 1965, and irregular collections in 1966 and 1967 were used to evaluate specific gravity and moisture content as indices of cone maturity. Although both indices decreased with advancing cone maturity, neither index gave a firm indication of seed maturity, but they did predict when cones would open. The ratio of embryo length to embryo cavity length gave the best estimate of seed maturity in 1964. Cones on a given tree all Open within a short period of time, but the opening of cones among individual trees within a stand may vary greatly. Larch cone collections can begin in mid-august; if cones are stored under well-ventilated conditions for several weeks before seeds are extracted, viability remains high. Book Cone and Seed Yields in Young Western White Pines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cone and Seed Yields in Young Western White Pines Classic Reprint written by Richard T. Bingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cone and Seed Yields in Young Western White Pines In the course of breeding western white pine (pinus monticola Dougl.) for resistance to blister rust (see Bingham, Olson, Becker, and others. 1969 and earlier), 18 years of data on cone and seed yields of individual trees from different geographic local ities have been accumulated. The protection of cones during development minimized losses due to insects and rodents; therefore, these data simulate the full reproductive potential of young trees in natural stands. Annual variation in cone production among geographic localities and individual trees thus is represented in these data. This information is indis pensable for practices of seed collection and seed orchard management which rely on knowledge relating to cone yields of individual trees and possibly on yields derived from controlled pollinations. Book A Natural History of Conifers

Download or read book A Natural History of Conifers written by Aljos Farjon and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling account of the extraordinary relatives of ordinary garden conifers. Leading expert Aljos Farjon provides a compelling narrative that observes conifers from the standpoint of the curious naturalist. It starts with the basic question of what conifers are and continues to explore their evolution, taxonomy, ecology, distribution, human uses, and issues of conservation. As the story unfolds many popular misconceptions are dispelled, such as the false notion that all conifers have cones. The extraordinary diversity of conifers begins to dawn as Farjon describes the diminutive creeping shrub Microcachrys tetragona, whose strange seed cones resemble raspberries, and the prehistoric-looking Araucaria meulleri. The taxonomic diversity of conifers is huge and Farjon goes on to relate how, over the course of 300 million years, these trees and shrubs have adapted to survive geological upheavals, climatic extremes, and formidable competition from flowering plants. All who seek to learn more about the early history of life on our planet will cherish this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Every Root an Anchor, writer and arborist R. Bruce Allison celebrates Wisconsin's most significant, unusual, and historic trees. More than one hundred tales introduce us to trees across the state, some remarkable for their size or age, others for their intriguing histories. From magnificent elms to beloved pines to Frank Lloyd Wright's oaks, these trees are woven into our history, contributing to our sense of place. They are anchors for time-honored customs, manifestations of our ideals, and reminders of our lives' most significant events. For this updated edition, Allison revisits the trees' histories and tells us which of these unique landmarks are still standing. He sets forth an environmental message as well, reminding us to recognize our connectedness to trees and to manage our tree resources wisely. As early Wisconsin conservationist Increase Lapham said, "Tree histories increase our love of home and improve our hearts. They deserve to be told and remembered."
