Book Matthew and the Thirsty Sun

Download or read book Matthew and the Thirsty Sun written by Angeline Khoo and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The young reader learns about such values as being sensitive to others, lending a helping hand, apologising for being thoughtless, making amends, and sharing happiness through this story about the water cycle. The main character, Matthew, who is always curious about what is going on around him, noticed one day that the leaves and flowers near the pool outside his home were not happy. After finding out that they were thirsty because they were not having enough water to drink, Matthew called out to Sun to stop drinking so much water. With the help of Wind and Cloud, they were able to bring rain to the thirsty plants. One reviewer who is a developmental psychologist (Dr. Albert Liau) has this to say, Matthew and the Thirsty Sun is such a lovely story. It is written in a poetic and engaging style that young children would really enjoy. The wonderful story incorporates interesting lessons on science and geography as well as important moral lessons on caring for others and nature. The colourful illustrations also bring the characters, such as the sun, the leaves, and the flowers, to life. A great story to be retold many times to young children!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming. Soil loss. Freshwater scarcity. Extinction. Overconsumption. Toxic waste production. Habitat and biodiversity erosion. These are only a few of our most urgent ecological crises. There are others as well and, despite the popularity of good-news environmentalism, few of them are going away. In this wide-ranging, grimly entertaining commentary on the environmental debate, Tom Athanasiou finds that these problems are exacerbated, if not caused, by the planet's division into "warring camps of rich and poor." Writing with passionate intelligence, Athanasiou proposes a simple yet radical solution--stop indulging easy, calming fantasies in which everything seems to change, but nothing important changes at all. Instead, do what needs to be done, now, while there is still time and goodwill. The bottom line, he concludes, is that there will be no sustainability without a large measure of justice. Without profound political and economic change, he argues, there can be no effective global environmental action, no real effort to save the planet.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller explores how people are changed by meeting Jesus personally—and how we can be changed encountering him today. The people who met Jesus Christ in person faced the same big life questions we face today. Like most of us, the answers handed down to them didn’t seem to work in the real world. But when they met Jesus, things immediately started to change for them. It seems he not only had the answers—he was the answer. In Encounters with Jesus, Timothy Keller shows how the central events and meetings in Jesus’ life can change our own lives forever. "Keller's work belongs on the bookshelf of every serious Bible student." —Examiner "Keller has mined the gold from these texts of Scripture, and any Christian is bound to have their minds expanded and hearts stirred." —Grace for Sinners

Sloane Parker is dreading her birthday. She doesn’t need a reminder she’s getting older, or that she’s feeling indifferent about her own life. Her husband surprises her with a birthday-weekend getaway—not with him, but with Sloane’s longtime best friend, troublemaker extraordinaire Naomi. Sloane anticipates a weekend of wine tastings and cozy robes and strategic avoidance of issues she’d rather not confront, like her husband’s repeated infidelity. But when they arrive at their rental cottage, it becomes clear Naomi has something else in mind. She wants Sloane to stop letting things happen to her, for Sloane to really live. So Naomi orchestrates a wild night out with a group of mysterious strangers, only for it to take a horrifying turn that changes Sloane’s and Naomi’s lives literally forever. The friends are forced to come to terms with some pretty eternal consequences in this bloody, seductive novel about how it’s never too late to find satisfaction, even though it might taste different than expected.
