Book The Gospel of Matthew in Spanish and English

Download or read book The Gospel of Matthew in Spanish and English written by Clinton Sheppard and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bilingual Spanish-English version of the Gospel of Matthew is based on the Reina-Valera translation of the Bible. The Spanish text contains about 3,200 words including plurals and conjugations, but the sentences are generally constructed from shorter phrases, which helps to keep them comprehensible for the student. The English text in this book was translated from the Spanish so that, unlike the King James English translation, it closely matches the structure and vocabulary used in the Spanish text. The Spanish and English texts are laid out in separate but aligned columns. This parallel format enables the student to practice reading Spanish without becoming distracted by the English, while also making it easy to find the English translation for an unknown word in context. Additionally, every word or phrase in the Spanish text is linked to its corresponding English translation - see the lower right corner of the cover (or inside) for an example. And both texts are fully indexed so that other uses of a word can be found. All together, these features make this book accessible to part-time Spanish language students as early as the second semester of study (U.S. 8th grade), and useful as a language enrichment or independent study resource, particularly for motivated Bible students or missionaries with no prior experience with the Spanish language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew Kirkpatrick’s debut, Light without Heat, is an inventive, surprising collection of short stories full of odd, marginal characters rendered with surreal humor and lyrical, often beautiful language. Formally playful, these stories take the shape of biographies, instructions, glossaries, and diagrams, all ultimately in the service of depicting characters with emotional intensity. Stories in the collection explore the flawed nature of memory, workplace malaise, the isolation of home, and the last throes of ending love. No two stories in Light without Heat are the same, yet all of them work toward sharing human experience in new, innovative ways.

Book excerpt: A girl grieves the loss of her dog in an achingly beautiful wordless epic from the Caldecott Honor–winning creator of Journey. This year’s summer vacation will be very different for a young girl and her family without Sascha, the beloved family dog, along for the ride. But a wistful walk along the beach to gather cool, polished stones becomes a brilliant turning point in the girl’s grief. There, at the edge of a vast ocean beneath an infinite sky, she uncovers, alongside the reader, a profound and joyous truth. In his first picture book following the conclusion of his best-selling Journey trilogy, Aaron Becker achieves a tremendous feat, connecting the private, personal loss of one child to a cycle spanning millennia — and delivering a stunningly layered tale that demands to be pored over again and again.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK · A PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER BEST OF THE YEAR “Woven together out of the strands of myth, science fiction, and ecological warning, Matt Bell’s Appleseed is as urgent as it is audacious.” —Kelly Link, Pulitzer Prize finalist and national bestselling author of Get in Trouble A “breathtaking novel of ideas unlike anything you’ve ever read” (Esquire) from Young Lions Fiction Award–finalist Matt Bell, a breakout book that explores climate change, manifest destiny, humanity’s unchecked exploitation of natural resources, and the small but powerful magic contained within every single apple. In eighteenth-century Ohio, two brothers travel into the wooded frontier, planting apple orchards from which they plan to profit in the years to come. As they remake the wilderness in their own image, planning for a future of settlement and civilization, the long-held bonds and secrets between the two will be tested, fractured and broken—and possibly healed. Fifty years from now, in the second half of the twenty-first century, climate change has ravaged the Earth. Having invested early in genetic engineering and food science, one company now owns all the world’s resources. But a growing resistance is working to redistribute both land and power—and in a pivotal moment for the future of humanity, one of the company’s original founders will return to headquarters, intending to destroy what he helped build. A thousand years in the future, North America is covered by a massive sheet of ice. One lonely sentient being inhabits a tech station on top of the glacier—and in a daring and seemingly impossible quest, sets out to follow a homing beacon across the continent in the hopes of discovering the last remnant of civilization. Hugely ambitious in scope and theme, Appleseed is the breakout novel from a writer “as self-assured as he is audacious” (NPR) who “may well have invented the pulse-pounding novel of ideas” (Jess Walter). Part speculative epic, part tech thriller, part reinvented fairy tale, Appleseed is an unforgettable meditation on climate change; corporate, civic, and familial responsibility; manifest destiny; and the myths and legends that sustain us all.
