Book excerpt: After a decades-long search for a theory of quantum gravity, the holographic principle has emerged as a framework to unify the independent successes of string theory and black hole thermodynamics. For the first time, some of the most vexing questions of quantum gravity can be tackled in a well-controlled environment. After reviewing the progression from perturbative string theory and black hole thermodynamics to the holographic principle, we apply the most basic realizations of holography, the matrix models, toward understanding non-perturbative issues of quantum gravity. Using the LLM matrix model dual to a sector of Type IIB string theory, we examine topology change of spacetime, where the geometric description is seen to break down in favor of more fundamental fermion fluid degrees of freedom. Next, we examine a class of spacetime singularities which arise as the extremal limit of a family of black holes. We show that the singularities emerge upon coarse-graining over smooth microstate geometries, shedding light on the connection between geometry and thermodynamics. Lastly, we use the BFSS matrix model to explore the emergence of non-perturbative gravitational degrees of freedom from non-commutative geometry.

A unifying theme in this area is the quantization of geometrical objects. The majority of lectures at the Advanced Study Institute on Quantum Ge ometry in Akureyri was on recent advances in superstring theory, which is the leading candidate for a unified description of all known elementary par ticles and interactions. The geometric concept of one-dimensional extended objects, or strings, has always been at the core of superstring theory but in recent years the focus has shifted to include also higher-dimensional ob jects, so called D-branes, which play a key role in the non-perturbative dynamics of the theory. A related development has seen the strong coupling regime of a given string theory identified with the weak coupling regime of what was previ ously believed to be a different theory, and a web of such" dualities" that interrelates all known superstring theories has emerged. The resulting uni fied theoretical framework, termed M-theory, has evolved at a rapid pace in recent years.

Niels Bohr Superstring theory has emerged as the most promising candidate for a quan tum theory of all known interactions. Superstrings apparently solve a problem that has defied solution for the past 50 years, namely the unification of the two great fundamental physical theories of the century, quantum field theory and general relativity. Superstring theory introduces an entirely new physical picture into theoretical physics and a new mathematics that has startled even the mathematicians. Ironically, although superstring theory is supposed to provide a unified field theory of the universe, the theory itself often seems like a confused jumble offolklore, random rules of thumb, and intuition. This is because the develop ment of superstring theory has been unlike that of any other theory, such as general relativity, which began with a geometry and an action and later evolved into a quantum theory. Superstring theory, by contrast, has been evolving backward for the past 20 years. It has a bizarre history, beginning with the purely accidental discovery of the quantum theory in 1968 by G. Veneziano and M. Suzuki. Thumbing through old math books, they stumbled by chance on the Beta function, written down in the last century by mathematician Leonhard Euler.
