Book Matrix Metalloproteinases and TIMPs

Download or read book Matrix Metalloproteinases and TIMPs written by J. F. Woessner and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2000 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a large family of enzymes that breakdown different components of the extracellular matrix. Their catalytic activity is dependent a metal ion, usually zinc. This issue of the Protein Profiles covers the sequence information, three-dimensional structures, activation, protein substrates, specificity requirements, inhibition, and biological roles of all the currently identified MMPs. The action of these enzymes must be carefully regulated. One way the cell does this, is by releasing inhibitory molecules known as tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). This volume contains information on the sequences, three-dimensional structures, and biological roles of the 4 known classes of TIMP. Matrix metalloproteinases will therefore be an invaluable source of data for all researchers interested in MMPs and TIMPs.

Book Matrix Metalloproteinase Protocols

Download or read book Matrix Metalloproteinase Protocols written by Ian M. Clark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-05 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the matrix metalloproteinase field began with the demonstration by Gross and Lapière, in 1962, that resorbing tadpole tail expressed an enzyme that could degrade collagen gels. These humble beginnings have led us to the elucidation of around twenty distinct vertebrate MMPs, along with a variety of homologs from such diverse organisms as sea urchin, plants, nematode worm, and bacteria. This, coupled with four known specific inhibitors of MMPs, the TIMPs, gives a complex picture. Part I of Matrix Metalloproteinase Protocols provides the reader with a selective overview of the MMP arena, and a chance to come to grips with where the field has been, where it is, and where it is going. I hope that this complements all of the methodology that comes later. Part II presents the reader with a diverse set of methods for the expression and purification of MMPs and TIMPs, bringing together the long and often hard-earned experience of a number of researchers. Part III allows the reader to detect MMPs and TIMPs at both the protein and mRNA level, whereas Part IV gives the ability to assay MMP and TIMP activities in a wide variety of circumstances.

Book The Role of Matrix Metalloproteinase in Human Body Pathologies

This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of proteolytic zinc-containing enzymes involved in physiological as well as in pathological processes in the human organism. MMPs play a key role in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix. Such a process may occur because of tissue homeostasis, morphogenesis, and tissue repair. However, remodeling could also be a part of many pathological states such as arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, or impaired development in congenital anomalies. This book overviews the role of MMPs in different pathologies affecting the human body.

Book Matrix Metalloproteinases In The Central Nervous System

Download or read book Matrix Metalloproteinases In The Central Nervous System written by Katherine Conant and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-07-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the reader with an understanding of the role played by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the normal and diseased central nervous system (CNS). These enzymes may be important to brain development, and may also contribute to tissue destruction, which is observed with inflammatory and degenerative conditions of the brain. The book provides a background on the biology of MMPs, and on the stimuli and conditions that are linked to an increase in their production and activity. It describes the targets of MMPs, which include matrix proteins such as collagen, soluble cytokines and chemokines, and cell surface receptors. Studies implicating MMPs in neuronal process outgrowth and cell migration in CNS development are covered. The book also touches on studies suggesting that, in certain situations, dysregulated MMP activity and/or production may be critical to blood-brain barrier breakdown and neuronal damage./a

Book Tetracyclines in Biology Chemistry and Medicine

Download or read book Tetracyclines in Biology Chemistry and Medicine written by M. Nelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tetracyclines have an illustrious history as therapeutic agents which dates back over half a century. Initially discovered as an antibiotic in 1947, the four ringed molecule has captured the fancy of chemists and biologists over the ensuing decades. Of further interest, as described in the chapter by George Armelagos, tetracyclines were already part of earlier cultures, 1500-1700 years ago, as revealed in traces of drug found in Sudanese Nubian mummies. The diversity of chapters which this book presents to the reader should illus trate the many disciplines which have examined and seen benefits from these fascinating natural molecules. From antibacterial to anti-inflammatory to anti autoimmunity to gene regulation, tetracyclines have been modified and redesigned for various novel properties. Some have called this molecule a biol ogist's dream because of its versatility, but others have seen it as a chemist's nightmare because of the synthetic chemistry challenges and "chameleon-like" properties (see the chapter by S. Schneider).

Multidisciplinary in scope, the book bridges the gap between fundamental and translational research, with applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industry, making it a thought-provoking read for basic and applied scientists engaged in biomedical research. Proteases represent one of the largest and most diverse families of enzymes known, and we now know that they are involved in every aspect of a given organism’s life functions. Under physiological conditions, proteases are regulated by their endogenous inhibitors. However, when the activity of proteases is not correctly regulated, disease processes such as tumour progression, vascular remodelling, atherosclerotic plaque progression, ulcer, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and inflammation can result. Many infective microorganisms require proteases for replication or use them as virulence factors, which has facilitated the development of protease-targeted therapies for a variety of parasitic diseases.

Book Matrix Metalloproteinases in Health and Disease

Download or read book Matrix Metalloproteinases in Health and Disease written by Raffaele Serra and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are members of an enzyme family and are critical for maintaining tissue allostasis. MMPs can catalyze normal turnover of the extracellular matrix (ECM) together with other metalloproteinases such as ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase) and ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motif) families. MMP activity is also regulated by a group of endogenous proteins called tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). All these proteins have a pivotal role involving ECM remodelling in normal physiological processes such as wound healing, embryogenesis, angiogenesis, bone remodelling, immunity, and the female reproductive cycle. An imbalance in the expression or activity of MMPs can also have important consequences in diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, chronic leg ulcers, and multiple sclerosis. In recent years, MMPs have been found to play an important role in the field of precision medicine, as they may serve as biomarkers that may predict an individual's disease predisposition, state, or progression. MMPs are also thought to be a sensible target for molecular therapy. The aim of this Special Issue is to explore the most recent findings in this field that may have an impact in healthcare systems.
