Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised, updated, and expanded edition has been neces sitated by the many important newer discoveries that have been made since the publication of the first edition. That volume contained almost 2000 references from the 1600s to 1953. Since then and after an extensive search, I have accumulated some 3800 additional titles from the world's literature on Paramecium. After certain titles that largely represented abstracts and preliminary reports that were followed by full research papers were eliminated, approximately 4400 full titles from the 1600s to the present were selected for inclusion in this edition. Most of the titles in the Bibliography are the more recent ones beginning with 1953. I consider the Bibliography an important part of the book: A good title of a paper in a journal is a minature abstract of its contents. Thus, the reader who may be interested in obtaining additional information not found in the book may refer directly to the original source. A cursory examination of the Bibliography will reveal that parame cium research has extended into all branches of biology, including bio chemistry and biophysics. Like other areas of science, paramecium research has become highly specialized and fragmented. I have attempted to organize and present the basic information in one book. Because of space limitations, some items may have been dealt with briefly. It is in such instances that the Bibliography will be found to be invaluable.

Book Paramecium

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hans-Dieter Görtz
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642730868
  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book Paramecium written by Hans-Dieter Görtz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a Book on Paramecium? Biologists usually concentrate their efforts on a single problem and a single organism. There is a difficulty with this practice, however, for as work on a problem proceeds it often becomes more ad vantageous to study the problem in another organism. Some biologists avoid the difficulty by moving from one organism to the other as the problem de mands. However, this tactic also has a disadvantage, for a thorough knowledge of the life cycle and thorough mastery of ways to handle a given organism in the laboratory are obviously of great importance to the researcher, and one can never know several organisms as well as one can know a single one. Another way of doing research is to pick the organism, learn all one can about it from all points of view, and then assess the significance of the findings. Tracy Sonneborn practiced research in very much this way. He would have found virtually every chapter in this volume about Paramecium a fascinating summary of one of his areas of research. Indeed, the beginnings of most of the topics in this book are founded on his studies. With every new fact he learned about Paramecium, he carefully assessed the significance of his findings, not on ly for research on protozoa, but for biology in general. His work, and in a way this book too, are indicative of the success of his strategy.

Book Research in Protozoology

Download or read book Research in Protozoology written by Tze-Tuan Chen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in Protozoology is the third book in a four-volume series on protozoological research. Like the previous two, this volume covers the cytology, parasitology, fibrillar systems, and genetics of protozoans. This volume explores the immunological aspects of infections caused by protozoans, identifies the organisms that live in and on protozoans, and describes the pathogenic and metabolic pathway of protozon infections. It also discusses the protozoan fibrillar system and the macronucleus of ciliates. This book will be of interest to persons dealing with studies on the genetics aspects, cytology and parasitology of protozoans.

Book Zoology For B Sc Students Semester I Diversity and Biology of Non Chordata NEP 2020 University of Lucknow

Download or read book Zoology For B Sc Students Semester I Diversity and Biology of Non Chordata NEP 2020 University of Lucknow written by VK Agarwal and published by S. Chand Publishing. This book was released on with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook has been designed to meet the needs of B.Sc. First Semester students of Zoology for the University of Lucknow under the recommended National Education Policy 2020. It comprehensively covers theory and practical papers, namely, Diversity and Biology of Non-Chordata. The theory part of this book aptly discusses the identification and classification of non-chordate animals on the basis of their form and structure and describes the general characters of non-chordate animals. Practical part of the book will make the students understand the taxonomic position and body organization of invertebrates. Relevant experiments corresponding to the theoretical topics and examples have been presented systematically to help students achieve sound conceptual understanding and learn experimental procedures.

Book Advances in Microbial Ecology

Download or read book Advances in Microbial Ecology written by J.G. Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Marshall is a hard act to follow. Volume 13 of Advances in Microbial Ecology has been produced by a new editorial board, and we, the members of that board, are delighted to have the opportunity to pay tribute to Kevin's achievements. In his time as Series Editor, the quality of the chapters submitted and the range of subject matter covered have ensured an expanding and more stimulated readership. This represents a considerable achievement, given the growth in the number of review volumes and the increasing tendency for journals to publish review articles. The achievement was reached not only through metic ulous attention to quality and detail but also by providing a forum for the expression of views, information, and results that would stimulate discussion. Advances in Microbial Ecology will continue to provide such a focus, although, because of the frequency of publication, it would not be practicable to introduce a "reply" or "comment" section. Although we do not deliberately aim to provide a forum for controversy, we encourage speculation based on sound scientific arguments. In addition, we would like to encourage authors to offer chapters for consideration. In the past, the volumes have largely comprised invited chapters. With the best will in the world, an editorial board of four cannot claim adequate coverage of such a vast and rapidly developing research area. We would there fore welcome submission of outline plans for chapters, which should be sent to the Editor.
