Book Mathew Goniwe on a South African Frontier

Download or read book Mathew Goniwe on a South African Frontier written by Minsie Meshach Menzi Duka and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In this community history Menzi Duka, speaking from personal experience and basing his narrative on a wealth of archival and secondary sources, leads the reader into hidden histories of a South African frontier and indeed into the lives of Cradock and Eastern Cape activists. The reader is taken into the streets of the Cradock township of Lingelihle, into homes and halls, into heads and hearts of activists young and old. In the middle of this roiled frontier, the organic intellectual and revolutionary Matthew Goniwe operated fearlessly to give his people hope and courage. This is a tale complex and fluid. It spills out all over, in locations and boardrooms, in town and country. It leads to a date with destiny. Here we have the author’s recall of Matthew Goniwe’s vision for South Africa and of his socio-political and ideological struggles”--Back cover.

Book Emancipatory Human Rights and the University

Download or read book Emancipatory Human Rights and the University written by Felisa Tibbitts and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the application of human rights to higher education through a critical lens. Combining theoretical and applied perspectives, it asks what a human rights framework grounded in liberation and justice can offer to ways of working and teaching practices in higher education. Human rights, in this edited compilation, call for continuous critical engagements around the higher education transformation project. The book recognizes human rights simultaneously as law, values, and emancipatory vision. It showcases global north and global south perspectives and encourages a dialogue between the human rights approach and other approaches to higher education transformation, such as decolonialization, anti-racism, diversity and inclusion, and intersectionality. Individual chapters featuring a range of case studies written from global south and north perspectives critically examine higher education practices linked with human rights, ranging from curricular practices to student activism and community partnerships. The critical space of the university and its role in the transformation of society is therefore viewed in multi-dimensional ways. Underlining the value of applying human rights as a framework in understanding and designing higher education transformation, the book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of the sociology of education, human rights education, higher education, and social justice education

Book Walk with Us and Listen

Download or read book Walk with Us and Listen written by Charles Villa-Vicencio and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective peace agreements are rarely accomplished by idealists. The process of moving from situations of entrenched oppression, armed conflict, open warfare, and mass atrocities toward peace and reconciliation requires a series of small steps and compromises to open the way for the kind of dialogue and negotiation that make political stability, the beginning of democracy, and the rule of law a possibility. For over forty years, Charles Villa-Vicencio has been on the front lines of Africa's battle for racial equality. In Walk with Us and Listen, he argues that reconciliation needs honest talk to promote trust building and enable former enemies and adversaries to explore joint solutions to the cause of their conflicts. He offers a critical assessment of the South African experiment in transitional justice as captured in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and considers the influence of ubuntu, in which individuals are defined by their relationships, and other traditional African models of reconciliation. Political reconciliation is offered as a cautious model against which transitional politics needs to be measured. Villa-Vicencio challenges those who stress the obligation to prosecute those allegedly guilty of gross violation of human rights, replacing this call with the need for more complementarity between the International Criminal Court and African mechanisms to achieve the greater goals of justice and peace building.

Book excerpt: The apartheid state employed many weapons against its opponents: imprisonment, banning, detention, assassination - and banishment. In a practice reminiscent of Tsarist and Soviet Russia, a large number of 'enemies of the state' were banished to remote areas, far from their homes, communities and followers. Here their existence became 'a slow torture of the soul', a kind of social death. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid, set in a global, historical and comparative perspective. It looks at the reasons why people were banished, their lives in banishment and the efforts of a remarkable group of activists, led by Helen Joseph, to assist them. Book jacket.
