Conclusion * * * * * An excerpt from: § 2. Historical Resumé. The earliest interest in divergent series centers about the series 1 - 1 + 1 - 1 + ... If we assume that this series has a generalized sum s, then the series, obtained by dropping the first term, - 1 + 1 - 1 + 1... must, by the third fundamental requirement of page 2, also have a generalized sum which is obviously -s. We have then, s - 1 = -s or s = 1/2. Thus, if the series is to have any value at all, that value must be 1/2. And this is precisely the value which Leibniz was led to attach to the series, by different considerations. The sum of n terms of the series is 0 or 1 according as n is even or odd; and since this sum is just as often equal to 1 as it is to 0, its probable value is the arithmetic mean, 1/2. This same value was later attached to the series by Euler, in a more satisfactory, though not entirely rigorous manner. "Let us say that the sum of any infinite series is the finite expression, by the expansion of which the series is generated. In this sense, the sum of the infinite series 1 - x + x2 - x3... will be 1/(1 + x), because the series arises from the expansion of the fraction, whatever number is put in place of x." In particular, 1/2 = 1 - 1 + 1 - 1 + ... It is true, as has already been intimated, that none of the methods given above, to prove that the series should have the value 1/2, is satisfactory from a theoretical point of view. But objections have been raised to the result for practical reasons also....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface by J. E. Littlewood: "All [Hardy's] books gave him some degree of pleasure, but this one, his last, was his favourite. When embarking on it he told me that he believed in its value (as well he might), and also that he looked forward to the task with enthusiasm. He had actually given lectures on the subject at intervals ever since his return to Cambridge in 1931, and he had at one time or another lectured on everything in the book except Chapter XIII [TheEuler-MacLaurin sum formula] ... [I]n the early years of the century the subject [Divergent Series], while in no way mystical or unrigorous, was regarded as sensational, and about the present title, now colourless, there hung an aroma of paradox and audacity."

Book Summable Series and Convergence Factors

Download or read book Summable Series and Convergence Factors written by Charles Napoleon Moore and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1938-12-31 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairly early in the development of the theory of summability of divergent series, the concept of convergence factors was recognized as of fundamental importance in the subject. One of the pioneers in this field was C. N. Moore, the author of the book under review.... Moore classifies convergence factors into two types. In type I he places the factors which have only the property that they preserve convergence for a convergent series or produce convergence for a summable series. In type II he places the factors which not only maintain or produce convergence but have the additional property that they may be used to obtain the sum or generalized sum of the series. This book gives a generalized systematic treatment of the theory of convergence factors of both types, for simply infinite series and for multiple series, convergent and summable.... --Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society

Book Mathematical and Algorithmic Puzzles

Download or read book Mathematical and Algorithmic Puzzles written by Pramod Ganapathi and published by . This book was released on 2024-05-29 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents serious mathematical and algorithmic puzzles that are mostly counterintuitive. The presented puzzles are simultaneously entertaining, challenging, intriguing, and haunting. This book introduces its readers to counterintuitive mathematical ideas and revolutionary algorithmic insights from a wide variety of topics. The presented solutions that are discovered by many mathematicians and computer scientists are highly counterintuitive and show supreme mathematical beauty. These counterintuitive solutions are intriguing to the degree that they shatter our preconceived notions, shake our long-held belief systems, debunk our fundamental intuitions, and finally rob us of sleep and haunt us for a lifetime. Multiple ways of attacking the same puzzle are presented which teach the application of elegant problem-solving strategies.

Book Divergent Series Summability and Resurgence III

Download or read book Divergent Series Summability and Resurgence III written by Eric Delabaere and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this volume is two-fold. First, to show how the resurgent methods introduced in volume 1 can be applied efficiently in a non-linear setting; to this end further properties of the resurgence theory must be developed. Second, to analyze the fundamental example of the First Painlevé equation. The resurgent analysis of singularities is pushed all the way up to the so-called “bridge equation”, which concentrates all information about the non-linear Stokes phenomenon at infinity of the First Painlevé equation. The third in a series of three, entitled Divergent Series, Summability and Resurgence, this volume is aimed at graduate students, mathematicians and theoretical physicists who are interested in divergent power series and related problems, such as the Stokes phenomenon. The prerequisites are a working knowledge of complex analysis at the first-year graduate level and of the theory of resurgence, as presented in volume 1.

Book Divergent Series Summability and Resurgence I

Download or read book Divergent Series Summability and Resurgence I written by Claude Mitschi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an elementary introduction to analytic continuation and monodromy, the first part of this volume applies these notions to the local and global study of complex linear differential equations, their formal solutions at singular points, their monodromy and their differential Galois groups. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is discussed from Bolibrukh’s point of view. The second part expounds 1-summability and Ecalle’s theory of resurgence under fairly general conditions. It contains numerous examples and presents an analysis of the singularities in the Borel plane via “alien calculus”, which provides a full description of the Stokes phenomenon for linear or non-linear differential or difference equations. The first of a series of three, entitled Divergent Series, Summability and Resurgence, this volume is aimed at graduate students, mathematicians and theoretical physicists interested in geometric, algebraic or local analytic properties of dynamical systems. It includes useful exercises with solutions. The prerequisites are a working knowledge of elementary complex analysis and differential algebra.

Book Summability Calculus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ibrahim M. Alabdulmohsin
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-03-07
  • ISBN : 3319746480

Download or read book Summability Calculus written by Ibrahim M. Alabdulmohsin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops the foundations of "summability calculus", which is a comprehensive theory of fractional finite sums. It fills an important gap in the literature by unifying and extending disparate historical results. It also presents new material that has not been published before. Importantly, it shows how the study of fractional finite sums benefits from and contributes to many areas of mathematics, such as divergent series, numerical integration, approximation theory, asymptotic methods, special functions, series acceleration, Fourier analysis, the calculus of finite differences, and information theory. As such, it appeals to a wide audience of mathematicians whose interests include the study of special functions, summability theory, analytic number theory, series and sequences, approximation theory, asymptotic expansions, or numerical methods. Richly illustrated, it features chapter summaries, and includes numerous examples and exercises. The content is mostly developed from scratch using only undergraduate mathematics, such as calculus and linear algebra.

Download or read book Real Infinite Series written by Daniel D. Bonar and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a widely accessible introductory treatment of infinite series of real numbers, bringing the reader from basic definitions and tests to advanced results. An up-to-date presentation is given, making infinite series accessible, interesting, and useful to a wide audience, including students, teachers, and researchers. Included are elementary and advanced tests for convergence or divergence, the harmonic series, the alternating harmonic series, and closely related results. One chapter offers 107 concise, crisp, surprising results about infinite series. Another gives problems on infinite series, and solutions, which have appeared on the annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. The lighter side of infinite series is treated in the concluding chapter where three puzzles, eighteen visuals, and several fallacious proofs are made available. Three appendices provide a listing of true or false statements, answers to why the harmonic series is so named, and an extensive list of published works on infinite series.

Book Anachronisms in the History of Mathematics

Download or read book Anachronisms in the History of Mathematics written by Niccolò Guicciardini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial matters surrounding the notion of anachronism are difficult ones: they have been broached by literary and art critics, by philosophers, as well as by historians of science. This book adopts a bottom-up approach to the many problems concerning anachronism in the history of mathematics. Some of the leading scholars in the field of history of mathematics reflect on the applicability of present-day mathematical language, concepts, standards, disciplinary boundaries, indeed notions of mathematics itself, to well-chosen historical case studies belonging to the mathematics of the past, in European and non-European cultures. A detailed introduction describes the key themes and binds the various chapters together. The interdisciplinary and transcultural approach adopted allows this volume to cover topics important for history of mathematics, history of the physical sciences, history of science, philosophy of mathematics, history of philosophy, methodology of history, non-European science, and the transmission of mathematical knowledge across cultures.
