Book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics

Download or read book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics written by Liping Ma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of teachers in the U.S. often document insufficient subject matter knowledge in mathematics. Yet, these studies give few examples of the knowledge teachers need to support teaching, particularly the kind of teaching demanded by recent reforms in mathematics education. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics describes the nature and development of the knowledge that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such knowledge seems more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts. The anniversary edition of this bestselling volume includes the original studies that compare U.S and Chinese elementary school teachers’ mathematical understanding and offers a powerful framework for grasping the mathematical content necessary to understand and develop the thinking of school children. Highlighting notable changes in the field and the author’s work, this new edition includes an updated preface, introduction, and key journal articles that frame and contextualize this seminal work.

Book Elementary School Mathematics by Grades Vol 6

Download or read book Elementary School Mathematics by Grades Vol 6 written by William Estabrook Chancellor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary School Mathematics by Grades, Vol. 6: Commercial Affairs Boys and girls in the upper grammar grades of the free common schools of American towns and cities are pursuing courses Of study by no means uniform. There is perhaps no general agreement in educational practice beyond the fact that it is considered desirable that boys and' girls should advance from elementary to secondary schools at about fourteen years of age. There are, however, marked tendencies to agree upon several other points. There is increasing agreement to the effect that pupils in the upper grammar grades should study what will most benefit them in discipline and in knowledge. We have come to see in the light of the new knowledge Of the facts and principles Of mental and moral growth, presented by genetic psychology, that what a child enjoys learning he profits by, and that what he profits by develops in him the normal life Of the child, which is the guarantee of an efficient life as an adult. There is a growing tendency to decrease the range of arithmetical instruction and to introduce much more geometrical instruc tion. There is also a distinct tendency to rely more and more upon the various forms of manual training in the education Of boys and girls; and this development along the lines of the industrial arts, which afford the materials of manual mental discipline, lends itself notably to the encouragement Of the study of geometry early in life. Book Mathematics in the Elementary Schools of the United States

Download or read book Mathematics in the Elementary Schools of the United States written by United States Bureau of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematics in the Elementary Schools of the United States: International Commission on the Teaching of Mathematics; The American Report, Committees I and II II. The elementary school. This term is now commonly applied to the types of schools formerly designated as primary, intermediate, and grammar or grammar grades. The course is nearly always 8 years in length, very rarely 7, occasionally 9 or 10. The completion of the elementary course is necessary for entrance to the high schools, and the elementary school rar'ely provides work paralleling that of the secondary school, this providing the marked con trast to European practice. In a few cases it is attempted to teach secondary subjects, such as foreign language and mathematics, in the upper grades of the elementary school. Under present conditions the standard maintained by the elementary school is such that seldom more than half of all children are able to finish it by the close of the compulsory school period 14 years of age. In 1907-8 some children were reported in the elementary schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Arithmetic, or Second Book of a Series of Mathematics His, book contains the Elements of Arithmetic, or perhaps 'more properly the Elements of Mathematical Science. In its preparation I have endeavored to give it not only a mathematical basis, but also a scientific structure. This I have done, keeping steadily in mind that it is a book for the young, for Whom the pathway of science should be made as easy and inviting as possible. We cannot insist too strongly on -the advantages of the blackboard exercises in developing the principles of science, and rendering them more easily and more thoroughly under stood. In a well-drilled class, Whilst one student is at the board demonstrating a theorem or solving a problem, and the other members of the class are looking on With attention, the latter learn as much as the former. Book Elementary School Mathematics by Grades Globe Series Vol 5

Download or read book Elementary School Mathematics by Grades Globe Series Vol 5 written by William Estabrook Chancellor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary School Mathematics by Grades, Globe Series, Vol. 5: Standard Measurements Early arithmetical exercises are, in most cases, inevitably oral rather than written. As we go higher in the science Of arithmetic the temptation to rely upon writing more than upon speech in the development Of the processes Of problems greatly increases in strength. Observation and reflection make it entirely clear that the most frequent uses Of arithmetic are simple multiplications, as in retail purchases, additions, and measurements by the eye. Various problems in this book illustrate the common instances in which we need to have arithmetical processes at perfect command. The complicated problems are for the Special workers in business and industry, and do not belong in children's text-books. It is possible that all the arithmetic which for its own sake as a useful body Of knowledge every boy or girl ought to know is contained in the earlier books Of this Series. Certainly very few girls will ever need to know much arithmetic beyond the topics Of the Fourth Book. The chief value Of advanced arith metic is not utilitarian, but disciplinary and cultural. I have aimed to make the oral recitations reviews Of practical matters, involving the fundamental operations and essential principles of arithmetic, but to make the written exercises such as involve careful, continued, and progressive reasoning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Arithmetic: Specially Prepared for Elementary Schools The Natural Arithmetic has been prepared to meet a demand which has grown out of the experience Of live, progressive teachers during the last ten years. Many educators have learned that a large part of the matter in common arithmetics is of no practical use to nine tenths of the children in our elementary schools; and that the fundamental principles involved in the use of numbers are few but that they are enshrouded in many blind and useless rules. At least one half of the time usually spent in studying arithmetic is wasted in memorizing rules and processes, and in unraveling mysteries which yield no profit even when solved. The study of arithmetic is required, not only for its practical value, but also because of its supposed disciplinary advantages. Book A Scrap Book of Elementary Mathematics

Download or read book A Scrap Book of Elementary Mathematics written by William F. White and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William F. White was a professor of mathematics at State Normal School in New Paltz, New York and held a PhD from Colgate University. He was also, very clearly, a lover of mathematics. A Scrap-Book of Elementary Mathematics: Notes, Recreations, Essays is White's love letter to math. White makes it clear early in this work that this is not a resource guide or a textbook. Rather, White has created a volume consisting primarily of puzzles, notes, and intriguing principles of mathematics. Essentially, this is the fun side of math. Repeating products, algebraic fallacies, axioms in elementary algebra, and the law of commutation are just four of the intriguing principles discussed. The real strengths of the work are the mathematical games and puzzles presented throughout. Each section of the book is brief, with topics covered in only one or two pages, and the author keeps the book moving at a rapid pace. Bibliographic notes and a detailed index conclude the work. A Scrap-Book of Elementary Mathematics: Notes, Recreations, Essays is exactly the type of text that should be introduced to students of mathematics. It demonstrates real world application of math and all of the quirks and oddities contained within its study. White has put together a lighthearted book that emphasizes enjoyment and discovery over serious analysis and strict repetition. While no replacement for a true textbook, this collection is sure to entertain. Ultimately, A Scrap-Book of Elementary Mathematics: Notes, Recreations, Essays is the rare book that can entertain both kids and adults with math. White's underappreciated work is highly recommended and deserves to sit side by side with modern math textbooks.
