Active learning for active minds The authors of the Mathematics in Action series believe that students learn mathematics best by actually doing the math within a realistic context. If a student is taking this course, why teach them the same content in the same way that they've already seen--yet did not retain? Following this principle, the authors provide a series of guided-discovery activities that help students to construct, reflect upon, and apply mathematical concepts, deepening their conceptual understanding as they do so. The active style of learning develops critical-thinking skills and mathematical literacy, while keeping the concepts in the context of real applications. The 6th Edition includes updated examples and activities for maximum interest and relevance, along with new and enhanced digital resources in MyLab(tm) Math to support conceptual understanding for students, wherever and whenever they need it. Personalize learning with MyLab Math By combining trusted author content with digital tools and a flexible platform, MyLab personalizes the learning experience and improves results for each student. 0135281571 / 9780135281574 Mathematics in Action: Algebraic, Graphical, and Trigonometric Problem Solving Plus MyLab Math with Pearson eText - Access Card Package Package consists of: 0135115612 / 9780135115619 Mathematics in Action: Algebraic, Graphical, and Trigonometric Problem Solving 0135162483 / 9780135162484 MyLab Math with Pearson eText - Standalone Access Card - for Mathematics in Action: Algebraic, Graphical, and Trigonometric Problem Solving

Book Productive Math Struggle

Download or read book Productive Math Struggle written by John J. SanGiovanni and published by Corwin. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All students face struggle, and they should—it is how they learn and grow. The teacher’s job is not to remove struggle, but rather to value and harness it, helping students develop good habits of productive struggle. But what’s missing for many educators is an action plan for how to achieve this, especially when it comes to math. This book guides teachers through six specific actions—including valuing, fostering, building, planning, supporting, and reflecting on struggle—to create a game plan for overcoming obstacles by sharing · Actionable steps, activities, and tools for implementation · Instructional tasks representative of each grade level · Real-world examples showcasing classroom photos and student work

Book Linear Algebra in Action

Download or read book Linear Algebra in Action written by Harry Dym and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based largely on courses that the author taught at the Feinberg Graduate School of the Weizmann Institute. It conveys in a user-friendly way the basic and advanced techniques of linear algebra from the point of view of a working analyst. The techniques are illustrated by a wide sample of applications and examples that are chosen to highlight the tools of the trade. In short, this is material that the author has found to be useful in his own research and wishes that he had been exposed to as a graduate student. Roughly the first quarter of the book reviews the contents of a basic course in linear algebra, plus a little. The remaining chapters treat singular value decompositions, convexity, special classes of matrices, projections, assorted algorithms, and a number of applications. The applications are drawn from vector calculus, numerical analysis, control theory, complex analysis, convex optimization, and functional analysis. In particular, fixed point theorems, extremal problems, best approximations, matrix equations, zero location and eigenvalue location problems, matrices with nonnegative entries, and reproducing kernels are discussed. This new edition differs significantly from the second edition in both content and style. It includes a number of topics that did not appear in the earlier edition and excludes some that did. Moreover, most of the material that has been adapted from the earlier edition has been extensively rewritten and reorganized.

Different from most math books, this series teaches through activities-encouraging students to learn by constructing, reflecting on, and applying the mathematical concepts. The user-friendly approach instills confidence in even the most reticent math students and shows them how to interpret data algebraically, numerically, symbolically, and graphically. The active style develops mathematical literacy and critical thinking skills. Updated examples, brand-new exercises, and a clearer presentation make the Fifth Edition of this text more relevant than ever to today's students.
