Book excerpt: A policy change of not grading homework in mathematics has long been discussed in the researcher's school with many different sources of data used in both sides of the argument. The origin of the policy change started when some teachers complained that when they were collecting homework or walking around and checking it, they noticed that the homework was completed in a hurried and uninterested manner clearly designed to get the grade "A for completion". Other teachers, while supervising the cafeteria, noticed many students copying their friends' homework, again defeating the purpose of the assignment. When these issues were brought up in a department meeting, possible solutions were discussed but they all required much more time on part of the teacher until a more experienced teacher said, "I don't even check homework anymore". This idea was met with hesitation and skepticism until he insisted that he did not see any increase in poor performance on his assessments. This discussion continued to move up to the administration until it shaped into the philosophy "We help students to be independent when we give them opportunities to learn the connections between the practice, work, and studying they put into learning and their success with mathematics. Our homework practices support this learning. We believe that a student's grade should reflect his or her understanding, knowledge and skills. For these reasons, the percent of homework completed or the apparent effort on homework is not included in the quarter grade."
