Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Arithmetic 1. The present work has been prepared with the belief that it will be of service to progressive teachers in American high schools, academies, and normal schools. As indicated by its title, it is intended for those who are taking up the subject a second time with the desire to review and extend the knowledge previously acquired. The purpose of the authors is more fully set forth in the following statement of some of the distinctive features of the book. 2. The applied problems refer to the ordinary commercial life of to-day, or they deal with elementary questions arising in the laboratory, or they are inserted for general information. The fact that tradition has furnished the schools with a mass of inherited puzzles which give a false notion of business, that in an age of science and invention these subjects have found no place in the arithmetics, and that the common graphic methods of representing statistics are not seen in the schools, has not deterred the authors from attempting to modernize the subject. At the same time they believe that the exercises will be found much more straightforward and simple than those with which the average text-book has so long been encumbered. 3. Problems in pure arithmetic in the high school are intended to furnish training in mathematical analysis. This is almost their only justification. Book A Common School Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Common School Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by D. B. Hagar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Common School Arithmetic It has been constructed with a View to the most rapid and thorough progress of the pupil by the use of the least number of books possible, and by the greatest economy of time. It combines mental and written exercises in a practical sys tem. All obsolete and valueless material and all merely puzzling problems have been excluded, but no pains have been spared to embody valuable modern methods of computa tion and topics having direct relation to business as it is transacted at the present day. The work is sufficiently comprehensive to render the use of a higher arithmetic quite unnecessary. It is ample enough in its range of subjects and exercises to qualify the learner for a skillful and prompt solution of all ordinary problems of a commercial character, and at the same time to subserve the purposes of mental discipline. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Mathematics Association of America's 2021 Euler Book Prize, this is an inclusive vision of mathematics—its beauty, its humanity, and its power to build virtues that help us all flourish“This is perhaps the most important mathematics book of our time. Francis Su shows mathematics is an experience of the mind and, most important, of the heart.”—James Tanton, Global Math Project"A good book is an entertaining read. A great book holds up a mirror that allows us to more clearly see ourselves and the world we live in. Francis Su’s Mathematics for Human Flourishing is both a good book and a great book."—MAA Reviews For mathematician Francis Su, a society without mathematical affection is like a city without concerts, parks, or museums. To miss out on mathematics is to live without experiencing some of humanity’s most beautiful ideas. In this profound book, written for a wide audience but especially for those disenchanted by their past experiences, an award‑winning mathematician and educator weaves parables, puzzles, and personal reflections to show how mathematics meets basic human desires—such as for play, beauty, freedom, justice, and love—and cultivates virtues essential for human flourishing. These desires and virtues, and the stories told here, reveal how mathematics is intimately tied to being human. Some lessons emerge from those who have struggled, including philosopher Simone Weil, whose own mathematical contributions were overshadowed by her brother’s, and Christopher Jackson, who discovered mathematics as an inmate in a federal prison. Christopher’s letters to the author appear throughout the book and show how this intellectual pursuit can—and must—be open to all.
