Download or read book 1999 National Education Goals Report written by National Education Goals Panel (Ed), Washington, Dc and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, ninth in a series, is designed to indicate progress made by the United States toward the eight National Education Goals. Following a statement of the eight Goals, part 1 explains the nature and purposes of the Goals. Part 2, "Summary of Progress to Date," evaluates national and state progress made toward these goals since 1990, the year they were established, placing emphasis on state improvement over time. Part 3 summarizes national progress, and part 4 summarizes state progress for each goal for the 34 state indicators. Much has been accomplished, but progress toward the Goals has not been uniform across the Goals or across the states. Much more must be done, particularly with regard to teacher education and professional development, mathematics and science achievement, the reduction of drug and alcohol use, and the promotion of safe and orderly schools. Three appendixes contain technical notes and sources for national and state indicators and acknowledgments. (Sld).
Download or read book Scientific Discourse written by David Ian Hanauer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-06-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Discourse examines the nature of scientific inquiry in the primary school classroom to show how this interacts with early literacy. Through an examination of the texts used and produced by pupils studying science the author shows how what is at work in this context of scientific discourse is actually multiliteracy. The teacher aids the pupils' learning using different forms of literacy spread across the spoken word, written text, visual text and physical action. The result of this diverse approach is a growth not only in scientific knowledge, but basic literacy. The book provides a theoretical introduction to developmental literacy theory, current positions of science education and advanced theories of multiliteracy and genre theory. The new theory of scientific discourse presented in this book will be of interest to researchers of applied linguistics, discourse analysis and education.

Download or read book Engineering Studies at Tribal Colleges and Universities written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-02-14 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to provide expert, objective, independent advice to 11 tribal colleges that are working together to offer engineering programs. The chief data-gathering activity was a one and one-half day workshop. Reasons for establishing a four-year engineering program at a TCU were outlined in the workshopâ€"making it possible for American Indian students to complete a four-year engineering degree entirely within the tribal college system; reducing the high attrition rate of American Indian students who attend mainstream educational institutions; and providing an engineering program that is culturally relevant to tribal students.
