Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems always involves the introduction of mathematical concepts. It is important, therefore, for any systems designer to have a good grasp of the mathematical bases used in CAD. The choice of mathematical models in a system also has an effect on the overall quality, although this effect may not always be visible to the final user. Depending on whether Bezier or B-spline functions are used for curves and surfaces, for example, the final user even if not a com puter scientist will notice a difference. If, for example, one of the control points is modified by the user, in a Bezier-type representation, the curve or surface will tend to be modified overall, but in a B-spline representation, the curve or surface will tend to be modified close to the point, and there only. More possibly harmful, however, is the effect of the mathematical model which has a number of properties invisible and unknown to the final user. In every case a model must be chosen with, it is hoped, the most appropriate characteristics and limits for the task in hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems always involves the introduction of mathematical concepts. It is important, therefore, for any systems designer to have a good grasp of the mathematical bases used in CAD. This book introduces mathematical bases in a general way, so as to allow the reader to understand the basic tools. Based on the-work of leading French researchers, it gives a clear outline of the mathematical concepts employed in setting up a CAD system that uses interactive graphic techniques. It deals thoroughly with basic graphics, two- and three-dimensional operations, as well as considering mathematical modeling in relation to geometric modeling. It also examines curves and surfaces, numerical methods of solving equations and finite element modeling, one of the many CAD design tools available today. Contents:Part 1: Basic Problems Using Graphics. Part 2: Curves and Surfaces. Part 3: Numerical Methods for Solving Equation Systems. Part 4: The Finite Element Model. Yvon Gardan, who is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Metz, is a wellknown authority on interactive graphic techniques, and is the author of Interactive Graphics in CAD. He is also director of the CADCAM Association of France (MICADO).

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite element method (FEM) has been understood, at least in principle, for more than 50 years. The integral formulation on which it is based has been known for a longer time (thanks to the work of Galerkin, Ritz, Courant and Hilbert,1.4 to mention the most important). However, the method could not be applied in a practical way since it involved the solution of a large number of linear or non-linear algebraic equations. Today it is quite common, with the aid of computers, to solve non-linear algebraic problems of several thousand equations. The necessary numerical methods and programming techniques are now an integral part of the teaching curriculum in most engineering schools. Mechanical engineers, confronted with very complicated structural problems, were the first to take advantage of advanced computational methods and high level languages (FORTRAN) to transform the mechanical models into algebraic equations (1956). In recent times (1960), the FEM has been studied by applied mathematicians and, having received rigorous treatment, has become a part of the more general study of partial differential equations, gradually replacing the finite difference method which had been considered the universal tool to solve these types of problems.

Book Advanced Numerical Simulation Methods

Download or read book Advanced Numerical Simulation Methods written by Gernot Beer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This entertaining introduction to advanced numerical modeling aims to lead the reader on a journey towards theholy grail of numerical simulation, i.e. one without the requirement of mesh generation, that takes data directly from CAD programs. This hands-on book emphasizes implementation and examples of programming in a higher level language are given. Written for users of simulation software, so they can understand the benefits of this new technology and demand progress from a somewhat conservative industry. Written for software developers, so they can see that this is a technology with a big future and written for researchers, in the hope that it will attract more people to work in this field.

Book excerpt: To our sons, Mike, Andrew, Alex, who did not inherit their fathers' level of interest in applied mechanics, but who became sophisticated in software development and in this regard surpassed their parents. A.P., V.S. Hard times came, the god5 got angry. Children do not behave themselves and everybody wishes to write a book. Ancient Babylonian inscription X Preface Preface to the English Edition The book you are reading is a translation from Russian into English. Within a pretty short term this book saw two editions in Russian. The authors received in spiring responses from readers that both stimulated our continuing and improving this work and made sure it would not be in vain of us to try to multiply our readers by covering the English-speaking engineering community. When we prepared the present edition, we took into account interests of the Western readers, so we had to make some changes to our text published earlier. These changes include the following aspects. First, we excluded a lot of references and discussions regarding Russian engi neering codes. It seems to us those are of no real interest for Western engineers oriented at Eurocode or national construction design regulations.
