Download or read book Advanced Problems in Mathematics written by Stephen Siklos and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new and expanded edition is intended to help candidates prepare for entrance examinations in mathematics and scientific subjects, including STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper). STEP is an examination used by Cambridge Colleges for conditional offers in mathematics. They are also used by some other UK universities and many mathematics departments recommend that their applicants practice on the past papers even if they do not take the examination. Advanced Problems in Mathematics bridges the gap between school and university mathematics, and prepares students for an undergraduate mathematics course. The questions analysed in this book are all based on past STEP questions and each question is followed by a comment and a full solution. The comments direct the reader's attention to key points and put the question in its true mathematical context. The solutions point students to the methodology required to address advanced mathematical problems critically and independently. This book is a must read for any student wishing to apply to scientific subjects at university level and for anyone interested in advanced mathematics.

Download or read book Algebraic Topology Applications and New Directions written by Ulrike Tillmann and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Stanford Symposium on Algebraic Topology: Applications and New Directions, held from July 23-27, 2012, at Stanford University, Stanford, California. The symposium was held in honor of Gunnar Carlsson, Ralph Cohen and Ib Madsen, who celebrated their 60th and 70th birthdays that year. It showcased current research in Algebraic Topology reflecting the celebrants' broad interests and profound influence on the subject. The topics varied broadly from stable equivariant homotopy theory to persistent homology and application in data analysis, covering topological aspects of quantum physics such as string topology and geometric quantization, examining homology stability in algebraic and geometric contexts, including algebraic -theory and the theory of operads.

Download or read book Stochastic Transport Processes in Discrete Biological Systems written by Eckart Frehland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes are in part based on a course for advanced students in the applications of stochastic processes held in 1978 at the University of Konstanz. These notes contain the results of re cent studies on the stochastic description of ion transport through biological membranes. In particular, they serve as an introduction to an unified theory of fluctuations in complex biological transport systems. We emphasize that the subject of this volume is not to introduce the mathematics of stochastic processes but to present a field of theoretical biophysics in which stochastic methods are important. In the last years the study of membrane noise has become an important method in biophysics. Valuable information on the ion transport mechanisms in membranes can be obtained from noise analysis. A number of different processes such as the opening and closing of ion channels have been shown to be sources of the measured current or voltage fluctuations. Bio logical 'transport systems can be complex. For example, the transport process can be coupled to other processes such as chemical reactions and take place in discontinuous structures of molecular dimensions. Furthermore, since there are strong electric fields or high concentration gradients across biological membranes ion transport processes of biological relevance are mostly processes far from equilibrium. For these reasons the development of new theoretical concepts has been necessary. The concept of transport in discrete systems has turned out to be more appropriate than continuum models.
Download or read book Culture and Developmental Systems Volume 38 written by Maria D. Sera and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest on child psychology and the role of cultural and developmental systems Now in its 38th volume, Minnesota Symposia on Child Psychology: Culture and Developmental Systems contains the collected papers from the most prestigious symposia in the field of child development. Providing scholars, students, and practitioners with access to the work of leading researchers in human development, it outlines how the field has advanced dramatically in recent years—both empirically and conceptually. The updated collection outlines the latest information and research on child psychology, including the cultural neuroscience of the developing brain in childhood, the role of culture and language in the development of color categorization, socioemotional development across cultures, and much more. Find out how much math is 'hard wired,' if at all Explore the development of culture, language, and emotion Discover cultural expressions and the neurobiological underpinnings in mother-infant interactions Examine the cultural organization of young children's everyday learning Written for generalists and specialists alike, Minnesota Symposia on Child Psychology offers the most up-to-date information on the central processes of human development and its implications for school success, as well as other areas.
