Book Performance Evaluation of Multiprogrammed Time shared Computer Systems

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Multiprogrammed Time shared Computer Systems written by Akira Sekino and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a comprehensive set of hierarchically organized modular analytical models developed for the performance evaluation of multiprogrammed virtual-memory time-shared computer systems using demand paging. The hierarchy of models contains a user behavior model, a secondary memory model, a program behavior model, a processor model, and a total system model. This thesis is particularly concerned with the last three models. The program behavior model developed in this thesis permits one to estimate the frequency of paging expected on a given processing system. The processor model enables one to evaluate the throughput of a given multi-processor multi-memory processing system under multiprogramming. Finally, the total system model allows us to derive the response time distribution of an entire computer system under study. The report includes two PL/I programs. (Author).

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Shadow Cpu Approximation for Modelling Priority Scheduling in Computer Systems A sound performance evaluation methodology is essential to the design and use of computer systems. Among performance evaluation methods, queuing network models have been widely recognized as cost and time effective tools, capable of predicting ability and necessary complements of simulations. Algorithms for efficiently estimating the throughput, response time and other measures of performance have been devised for a broad range of queuing network models. Although this range is very rich and adequate for modelling many realistic features of a computer system, nevertheless it has major limitations. An important one is the inability to model pre-emptive priority scheduling disciplines. Although exact closed-form solutions for such network models are open research problems, several approximation techniques have been proposed. An important one was Sevcik's [Sevc, 77] "shadow CPU" technique, which admits a product form solution and gives performance bounds which are quite tight in many circumstances. In this paper, we extend the shadow CPU model to an optimal approximation of the priority model, within the restrictions of the product form. We propose a computationally efficient sub-optimal approximation technique which gives tighter performance bounds compared to the original shadow CPU technique. We also investigate the limitations of such shadow server-product form techniques for modelling priorities. Book Approximate Models for Processor Utilization in Multiprogrammed Computer Systems

Download or read book Approximate Models for Processor Utilization in Multiprogrammed Computer Systems written by Donald Paul Gaver and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents results of an approximation study of cyclic queueing phenomena that occur in multiprogrammed computer systems. Based on Wald's Identity and using ideas of diffusion, the objective is to develop convenient and nearly explicit formulas relating processor use in such systems to simple program parameters and the level of multiprogramming. Some numerical results to indicate the quality of the proposed approximation are given. (Author).

Book Study of Multiprogrammed Computer Systems with Memory Hierarchies

Download or read book Study of Multiprogrammed Computer Systems with Memory Hierarchies written by Rodrigo Querubin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of using queueing networks to study the performance of multiprogrammed computer systems that use memory hierarchies was investigated. It was found that these kinds of models are adequate provided the success function of the memory hierarchy is known. A stochastic algorithm to obtain the success function of the hierarchy was developed. The results obtained, whenever this model is used in conjunction with the queueing network, were extensively compared with conventional simulation techniques, and the accuracy found to be within five percent. The problem of scheduling the Central Processor was considered, and empirical algorithms to determine policies that set upper and lower bounds on the success function of the hierarchy were proposed. Mathematical methods were employed to analyze various system configurations, that include several input-output channels and processors. (Author).
