Book Formal Theories of Politics

Download or read book Formal Theories of Politics written by P. E. Johnson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal Theories of Politics demonstrates the role of formal mathematical models in political science, and aims to convey a sense of the questions and methods which govern the political science research agenda. While there is still much interest in empirical patterns of voting behaviour and public opinion data, there has been substantial growth in emphasis on mathematical theory as a technique for the derivation of testable hypotheses. Topics discussed include: optimal candidate strategies and equilibria in competitive elections; voting agendas and parliamentary procedure in the multidimensional events; revolution, repression and inequality as outputs of dynamics systems. The mathematical techniques are widely varied, including game theory, functional analysis, differential equations, expert systems, stochastic processes and statistical models.

Book Dynamical Modeling Of The Onset Of War

Download or read book Dynamical Modeling Of The Onset Of War written by Alvin M Saperstein and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-09-23 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical science and technology (engineering) are fundamentally linked by the possibility of predictions: science tests itself and grows by making and checking predictions; technology relies on predictions and thus furthers the growth of the associated science. The political science of international relations is similarly associated with the “technology” of policy making by governments and elites: the growth of the science is dependent upon its applicability for useful policy making. This book explores the applicability of predictability — based upon dynamical modeling, and the related concepts of chaos and complexity — to the understanding of international relations, with the hope that this will lead to insights into policy making and hence the growth of the science of international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1915, Harold Guetzkow might have been a child of the "Roaring Twenties." But in fact Professor Guetzkow is much more a "child of the depression" (to use his own term). A complication of essays by scholars who took time and energy to pen their work in honor of Harold Guetzkow. The chapters that follow represent a real contribution to the study of international relations and document the influence of Harold Guetzkow in catalyzing that study over the last thirty years.

Book Introduction to Mathematical Models in Market and Opinion Research

Download or read book Introduction to Mathematical Models in Market and Opinion Research written by T. Harder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the introduction to his book Dr. Harder has very clearly described its purpose and organization. I only want to add for the English-speaking reader a few words on the place the present text is likely to have in the cur rent literature. At first Dr. Harder's undertaking might come as a surprise. Only a few years ago, Zeisel's Say it with Figures gave the market research practi tioner some ideas of how simple figures and tables could be successfully employed; Langhoff's publication for the American Marketing Associa tion presented some pertinent mathematical models in the most elemen tary form; why should a German author believe he can already introduce us to serious mathematical procedures for use in product management and advertising? After reading the book, incredulity turns into pleasure because of the skill with which the author has pursued his task. As a matter of fact, the book can serve two audiences who at first glance might appear to have quite opposing interests. For the mathematically trained market re searcher, the book has the marked advantage of combining a variety of ap proaches not ordinarily mixed in one volume. If the market researcher be gan as an economist he is already familiar with difference equations and time series analysis; if he moved in from psychology, he is already ac quainted with factor analysis. But as he reads this book, he finds the two worlds well integrated.

Book Formal Theories in International Relations

Download or read book Formal Theories in International Relations written by Michael Nicholson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, gives a critical account of formal international relations theory. That formal and mathematical methods can be applied to the study of international relations is often regarded with surprise, but the author demonstrates not only how these methods give insights into problems such as deterrence or arms races but also that the increase in the power of explanatory tools depends on the more rigourous development of theory along these lines. Mathematical methods have been applied to the study of international behaviour since the pioneering work of Lewis Fry Richardson in the 1920s and 1930s. However, it was in the post Second World War period that they became widespread. Dr Nicholson discusses the application of such methods as the theory of games to problems of relationships between states, catastrophe theory to the study of initiation of violence, and probability theory to the question of the probability of nuclear war.

  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Constraint Theory written by George J. Friedman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packed with new material and research, this second edition of George Friedman’s bestselling Constraint Theory remains an invaluable reference for all engineers, mathematicians, and managers concerned with modeling. As in the first edition, this text analyzes the way Constraint Theory employs bipartite graphs and presents the process of locating the “kernel of constraint” trillions of times faster than brute-force approaches, determining model consistency and computational allowability. Unique in its abundance of topological pictures of the material, this book balances left- and right-brain perceptions to provide a thorough explanation of multidimensional mathematical models. Much of the extended material in this new edition also comes from Phan Phan’s PhD dissertation in 2011, titled “Expanding Constraint Theory to Determine Well-Posedness of Large Mathematical Models.” Praise for the first edition: "Dr. George Friedman is indisputably the father of the very powerful methods of constraint theory." --Cornelius T. Leondes, UCLA "Groundbreaking work. ... Friedman's accomplishment represents engineering at its finest. ... The credibility of the theory rests upon the formal proofs which are interspersed among the illuminating hypothetical dialog sequences between manager and analyst, which bring out distinctions that the organization must face, en route to accepting Friedman's work as essential to achieve quality control in developing and applying large models." --John N. Warfield

Book Mathematical Modeling in Economics Ecology and the Environment

Download or read book Mathematical Modeling in Economics Ecology and the Environment written by N.V. Hritonenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of interrelation between human economics and natural environment include scientific, technical, economic, demographic, social, political and other aspects that are studied by scientists of many specialities. One of the important aspects in scientific study of environmental and ecological problems is the development of mathematical and computer tools for rational management of economics and environment. This book introduces a wide range of mathematical models in economics, ecology and environmental sciences to a general mathematical audience with no in-depth experience in this specific area. Areas covered are: controlled economic growth and technological development, world dynamics, environmental impact, resource extraction, air and water pollution propagation, ecological population dynamics and exploitation. A variety of known models are considered, from classical ones (Cobb Douglass production function, Leontief input-output analysis, Solow models of economic dynamics, Verhulst-Pearl and Lotka-Volterra models of population dynamics, and others) to the models of world dynamics and the models of water contamination propagation used after Chemobyl nuclear catastrophe. Special attention is given to modelling of hierarchical regional economic-ecological interaction and technological change in the context of environmental impact. Book Economic Mathematical Methods and Models under Uncertainty

Download or read book Economic Mathematical Methods and Models under Uncertainty written by A. G. Aliyev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book on mathematical programming, the postulate spacial-time certainty of economic process at uncertainty conditions in finite-dimensional vector space and the principle piecewise-linear homogeneity of economic process at uncertainty conditions in finite-dimensional vector space are first suggested. A special theory on constructing piecewise-linear economic-mathematical models was developed, and a criterion of multivariate prediction of economic process and their control at uncertainty conditions in a finite-dimensional vector space was suggested. A packet of numerical programs for computer simulation in constructing and multivariate prediction of economic state with the help of n-element piecewise-linear economic-mathematical models with regard to the uncertainty factors effect in m-dimensional vector space is also suggested. This book is intended for students of economic and administrative specialties as well as for research associates in the sphere of economic-mathematical methods, management, and banking.

Book Qualitative Mathematics for the Social Sciences

Download or read book Qualitative Mathematics for the Social Sciences written by Lee Rudolph and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-03 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Lee Rudolph brings together international contributors who combine psychological and mathematical perspectives to analyse how qualitative mathematics can be used to create models of social and psychological processes. Bridging the gap between the fields with an imaginative and stimulating collection of contributed chapters, the volume updates the current research on the subject, which until now has been rather limited, focussing largely on the use of statistics. Qualitative Mathematics for the Social Sciences contains a variety of useful illustrative figures, introducing readers from the social sciences to the rich contribution that modern mathematics has made to our knowledge of logic, structures, and dynamic systems. A beguiling array of conceptual systems, topological models and fractals are discussed which transcend the application of statistics, and bring a fresh perspective to the study of social representations. The wide selection of qualitative mathematical methodologies discussed in this volume will be hugely valuable to higher-level undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology, sociology and mathematics. It will also be useful for researchers, academics and professionals from the social sciences who want a firmer grasp on the use of qualitative mathematics.
