Book Mathematical Modelling of a Continuous Direct Resistive Heating Furnace for the Regeneration of Activated Carbon

Download or read book Mathematical Modelling of a Continuous Direct Resistive Heating Furnace for the Regeneration of Activated Carbon written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model of the steady-state performance of a continuous, direct resistive heating furnace (DRHF), used for regenerating granular activated carbon, has been developed. This mathematical model can be used as a design tool to predict the axial and radial temperature profiles, as well as the electrical potential and power requirements for a given set of carbon and steam flowrates, electrical current, and furnace dimensions. The validity of the model has been verified on a small-scale (up to about 3 kg/h) DRHF. The temperatures could mostly be predicted to within 20 K, while the electrical potential and power requirements were predicted correctly to within 10 per cent. When the carbon's effective mean specific heat capacity was used as a fitting factor, it was concluded that the thermal decomposition of the carbon contributes about 300 J/(kg K) to the effective specific heat capacity of the sample of carbon used. Furthermore, it was concluded that carbon approaching the inlet is pre-heated by water vapour rising from the furnace, which condenses on the carbon, hence increasing its moisture content above the original moisture content of the carbon fed into the furnace hopper.

Book A Continuous Direct Resistive Heating Furnace for the Regeneration of Granular Activated Carbon

Download or read book A Continuous Direct Resistive Heating Furnace for the Regeneration of Granular Activated Carbon written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mintek had been involved in the development of a batch-operated direct resistive heating furnace (DRHF), known as the Rintoul furnace, for the regeneration of granular activated carbon (GAC). In order to overcome the disadvantages of a batch operation while retaining the advantages of direct resistive heating, a continuous vertical-tube DRHF has been developed. Both two-litre and 20-litre models, which can treat about 72 and 720 kg of carbon per 24 hours respectively, were designed, fabricated, and tested at Mintek. The regeneration of spent GAC from various metallurgical plants yielded very promising results. After modification of the control strategy initially chosen for feeding and discharging the Mintek DRHF, the new configuration can confidently be scaled up. Preliminary estimates indicate that the capital and operating costs of such a plant-scale furnace should be less than those of a rotary kiln of similar capacity.

Book The Development and Performance of the Minfurn Carbon regeneration Furnace

Download or read book The Development and Performance of the Minfurn Carbon regeneration Furnace written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Minfurn is a novel carbon-regeneration furnace developed at Mintek. It combines the advantages of direct resistive heating in a vertical-tube furnace with those of continuous operation, in a furnace of which the capital, operating and maintenance costs compare favourably with those of conventional rotary kilns. After it had been successfully tested under experimental conditions on carbons containing different contaminants, a 3 kg/h unit was installed on the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant at the Klipwal Gold Mine near Piet Retief, where it has been operating at, on average, 123 per cent of its design capacity. Since the installation of the Minfurn, monthly average losses of dissolved gold of less than 0,02 ppm have been maintained for several successive months for the first time since January 1989. It is also possible that the monthly average residue values have been reduced. Further improvements to the carbon circuit are possible, and the possibility of making further savings by a reduction in the carbon-throughput rate still needs to be investigated. The mathematical modelling of the furnace has progressed to the stage where the future scale-up and design of the Minfurn can be carried out by simulation of the performance of different designs, and choosing the design that yields the desired performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption technology is a promising avenue for wastewater treatment. Numerous adsorbent materials are presently synthesized. Green or environmental friendly adsorbents are derived from plants and agricultural crop sources, giving them a very low production cost when compared to synthetic polymers. This monograph explains the basic principles of green adsorption technology, their production processes and strategies to remove different categories of environmental pollutants (dyes, heavy metals and phenols/pesticides). The book explains details in terms of features such as adsorption capacity, physico-chemical kinetics and reuse potential. A summary of the economics and future prospect for green adsorption technology is also given. This text is a handy reference for environmental chemistry students, researchers and policy makers.

Book Deactivation and Regeneration of Zeolite Catalysts

Download or read book Deactivation and Regeneration of Zeolite Catalysts written by M. Guisnet and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In chemical processes, the progressive deactivation of solid catalysts is a major economic concern and mastering their stability has become as essential as controlling their activity and selectivity. For these reasons, there is a strong motivation to understand the mechanisms leading to any loss in activity and/or selectivity and to find out the efficient preventive measures and regenerative solutions that open the way towards cheaper and cleaner processes. This book covers in a comprehensive way both the fundamental and applied aspects of solid catalyst deactivation and encompasses the state-of-the-art in the field of reactions catalyzed by zeolites. This particular choice is justified by the widespread use of molecular sieves in refining, petrochemicals and organic chemicals synthesis processes, by the large variety in the nature of their active sites (acid, base, acid-base, redox, bifunctional) and especially by their peculiar features, in terms of crystallinity, structural order and textural properties, which make them ideal models for heterogeneous catalysis. The aim of this book is to be a critical review in the field of zeolite deactivation and regeneration, by collecting a series of contributions by experts in the field which describe the factors, explain the techniques to study the causes and suggest methods to prevent (or limit) catalyst deactivation. At the same time, an anthology of commercial processes and exemplar cases provides the reader with theoretical insights and practical hints on the deactivation mechanisms and draws attention to the key role played by the loss of activity on process design and industrial practice.
