Book excerpt: This grant supported research by two University of California Berkeley graduate students on innovative numerical methods for flows around complex boundaries such as occur in solidification from the melt. New two-dimensional magnetization-based methods for complex fluid flows were developed and analyzed. New adaptive finite difference methods for simulation of the fluid flow in Czochralski growth were implemented and tested.

Book Applied Parallel Computing New Paradigms for HPC in Industry and Academia

Download or read book Applied Parallel Computing New Paradigms for HPC in Industry and Academia written by Tor Sorevik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-29 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at PARA 2000, the Fifth International Workshop on Applied Parallel Computing. PARA 2000 was held in Bergen, Norway, June 18-21, 2000. The workshop was organized by Parallab and the Department of Informatics at the University of Bergen. The general theme for PARA 2000 was New paradigms for HPC in industry and academia focusing on: { High-performance computing applications in academia and industry, { The use of Java in high-performance computing, { Grid and Meta computing, { Directions in high-performance computing and networking, { Education in Computational Science. The workshop included 9 invited presentations and 39 contributed pres- tations. The PARA 2000 meeting began with a one-day tutorial on OpenMP programming led by Timothy Mattson. This was followed by a three-day wor- hop. The rst three PARA workshops were held at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Lyngby (1994, 1995, and 1996). Following PARA’96, an - ternational steering committee for the PARA meetings was appointed and the committee decided that a workshop should take place every second year in one of the Nordic countries. The 1998 workshop was held at Ume a University, Sweden. One important aim of these workshops is to strengthen the ties between HPC centers, academia, and industry in the Nordic countries as well as worldwide. The University of Bergen organized the 2000 workshop and the next workshop in the year 2002 will take place at the Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland.

Book excerpt: Volume 2 is divided into 2 parts. Part A reviews the principal techniques used for bulk single crystal growth from melt, solution and vapour and for industrial mass crystallisation starting, in chapter 1, with nature's techniques. The growth of synthetic crystals of a wide range of materials for research and commercial use is covered in depth, with emphasis placed on those techniques which are of current importance: techniques of only historical interest have not been included. Part B covers the basic mechanisms and dynamics of melt and solution growth covering segregation, melt convection, stress in the cooling crystal, polyphase solidification, growth in gels, spherulitic crystallisation and the numerical modelling of Bridgman and Czochralski growth processes.

Book Applied Nonlinear Analysis

Download or read book Applied Nonlinear Analysis written by Adélia Sequeira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is meant as a present to honor Professor on the th occasion of his 70 birthday. It collects refereed contributions from sixty-one mathematicians from eleven countries. They cover many different areas of research related to the work of Professor including Navier-Stokes equations, nonlinear elasticity, non-Newtonian fluids, regularity of solutions of parabolic and elliptic problems, operator theory and numerical methods. The realization of this book could not have been made possible without the generous support of Centro de Matemática Aplicada (CMA/IST) and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Special thanks are due to Dr. Ulrych for the careful preparation of the final version of this book. Last but not least, we wish to express our gratitude to Dr. for her invaluable assistance from the very beginning. This project could not have been successfully concluded without her enthusiasm and loving care for her father. On behalf of the editors ADÉLIA SEQUEIRA v honored by the Order of Merit of the Czech Republic by Václav Havel, President of the Czech Republic, on the October 28, 1998, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Charles University in Prague, Presidential Research Professor at the Northern Illinois University and Doctor Honoris Causa at the Technical University of Dresden, has been enriching the Czech and world mathematics with his new ideas in the areas of partial differential equations, nonlinear functional analysis and applications of the both disciplines in continuum mechanics and hydrodynamics for more than forty years.

Book Computational Modeling for Fluid Flow and Interfacial Transport

Download or read book Computational Modeling for Fluid Flow and Interfacial Transport written by Wei Shyy and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical applications and examples highlight this treatment of computational modeling for handling complex flowfields. A reference for researchers and graduate students of many different backgrounds, it also functions as a text for learning essential computation elements. Drawing upon his own research, the author addresses both macroscopic and microscopic features. He begins his three-part treatment with a survey of the basic concepts of finite difference schemes for solving parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic partial differential equations. The second part concerns issues related to computational modeling for fluid flow and transport phenomena. In addition to a focus on pressure-based methods, this section also discusses practical engineering applications. The third and final part explores the transport processes involving interfacial dynamics, particularly those influenced by phase change, gravity, and capillarity. Case studies, employing previously discussed methods, demonstrate the interplay between the fluid and thermal transport at macroscopic scales and their interaction with the interfacial transport.
