Book Modeling and Simulation of Microstructure Evolution in Solidifying Alloys

Download or read book Modeling and Simulation of Microstructure Evolution in Solidifying Alloys written by Laurentiu Nastac and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-07-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of Modeling and Simulation of Microstructure Evolution in Solidifying Alloys is to describe in a clear mathematical language the physics of the solidification structure evolution of cast alloys. The concepts and methodologies presented here for the net-shaped casting and the ingot remelt processes can be applied, with some modifications, to model other solidification processes such as welding and deposition processes. Another aim of the book is to provide simulation examples of the solidification structure modeling in some crucial commercial casting technologies as well as to provide practical techniques for controlling the structure formation during the solidification processes.

Book Science and Engineering of Casting Solidification

Download or read book Science and Engineering of Casting Solidification written by Doru Michael Stefanescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We come to know about the world in two distinctive ways: by direct perception and by application of rational reasoning which, in its highest form, is mathematical thinking. The belief that the underlying order of the world can be expressed in mathematical form lies at the very heart of science. In other words, we only know what we can describe through mathematical models. Casting of metals has evolved first as witchcraft, to gradually become an art, then a technology, and only recently a science. Many of the processes used in metal casting are still empirical in nature, but many others are deep-rooted in mathematics. In whatever form, casting of metals is an activity fundamental to the very existence of our world, as we know it today. Foundry reports indicate that solidification modeling is not only a cost-effective investment but also a major technical asset. It helps foundries move into markets with more complcx and technically demanding work. The ability to predict internal soundness allows foundries to improve quality and deliveries, and provides the information required to make key manufacturing decisions based on accurate cost estimates before pattern construction even begins. The acceptance of computational modeling of solidification by the industry is a direct result of the gigantic strides made by solidification science in the last two decades.

Book Modeling of Solidification Microstructure During Ultrasonic Processing of Cast Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Modeling of Solidification Microstructure During Ultrasonic Processing of Cast Aluminum Alloys written by Aqi Dong and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to study the formation of the solidification structure including the columnar-toequiaxedtransition (e.g., CET) under the influence of ultrasound, a 2-zone furnace system and an ultrasonic equipment were built and utilized. The 2-zone furnace system consists of an induction furnace with a top coil and a bottom coil, a graphite crucible, and. a water-cooled chill block located at the bottom of the crucible. By controlling both the top and bottom coil output power independently, the furnace can create various temperature gradients and cooling rates in different regions of the graphite crucible. The ultrasound Nb probe was inserted at the top of the crucible. The top of the crucible was also thermally insulated. Temperature measurements were performed at different locations in the crucible. The effects of ultrasound on the microstructure formation during solidification of A356 alloy was studied. A numerical model was developed to simulate the solidification process in the crucible and to assist in developing of solidification maps. In addition, with the help of machine learning techniques, the mutual interaction between Al-Si based alloys content, physical properties and processing parameters have been studied. Quantitative relationship equations and the significance of each key factors were developed and analyzed via machine learning, which helps to better understand the complex nonlinear relationship of alloy composition-physical properties-solidification processing parameters-mechanical performance in cast Al-Si based alloys. In the first chapter, the background of A356 alloy, ultrasonic stirring technology and the application of machine learning technique on metallurgical and materials engineering are introduced. The second chapter describes the methodology of the ultrasonic refining and modification mechanisms as well as several relevant machine learning algorithms that can be applied to study metallic materials. In the third chapter, the ultrasound effects on the formation of the solidification structure of A356 ingots processed via a 2-Zone induction melting furnace are studied. The fourth chapter focuses on modeling of segregation and microstructure evolution during the solidification of A356. Finally, in the fifth chapter a prediction of a quantitative relationship of alloys content-physical properties-processing parameters-mechanical properties using machine learning is performed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with metal processing and its numerical modelling and simulation. In total, 21 papers from different distinguished authors have been compiled in this area. Various processes are addressed, including solidification, TIG welding, additive manufacturing, hot and cold rolling, deep drawing, pipe deformation, and galvanizing. Material models are developed at different length scales from atomistic simulation to finite element analysis in order to describe the evolution and behavior of materials during thermal and thermomechanical treatment. Materials under consideration are carbon, Q&T, DP, and stainless steels; ductile iron; and aluminum, nickel-based, and titanium alloys. The developed models and simulations shall help to predict structure evolution, damage, and service behavior of advanced materials.

Book excerpt: The relation between microstructures and mechanical properties has always been a challenge for materials science. Modelling the formation, properties and long term stability of microstructures is one of the most impressive and promising advances of modern materials science. This book presents recent advances and challenges in this fast evolving cross disciplinary field. It addresses applications of classical physical metallurgy, and the need for new modelling approaches, both on the analytical viewpoint and on the simulation side.

Book Modeling Steel Deformation in the Semi Solid State

Download or read book Modeling Steel Deformation in the Semi Solid State written by Marcin Hojny and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses selected aspects of steel-deformation modelling, both at very high temperatures and under the conditions in which the liquid and the solid phases coexist. Steel-deformation modelling with its simultaneous solidification is particularly difficult due to its specificity and complexity. With regard to industrial applications and the development of new, integrated continuous casting and rolling processes, the issues related to modelling are becoming increasingly important. Since the numerous industrial tests that are necessary when traditional methods are used to design the process of continuous casting immediately followed by rolling are expensive, new modelling concepts have been sought. Comprehensive tests were applied to solve problems related to the deformation of steel with a semi-solid core. Physical tests using specialist laboratory instruments (Gleeble 3800thermo-mechanical simulator, NANOTOM 180 N computer tomography, Zwick Z250 testing equipment, 3D blue-light scanning systems), and advanced mathematical modelling (finite element method (FEM), SPH smoothed particle method, cellular automata method CA) were used. This book presents in detail a modelling concept for steel deformation in the semi-solid state based on an approach integrating physical and computer simulations with a full or partial information exchange between these areas.
