Book Industrial Mathematics

Download or read book Industrial Mathematics written by Avner Friedman and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial mathematics is a fast growing field within the mathematical sciences. It is characterized by the origin of the problems which it engages; they all come from industry: research and development, finances, and communications. The common feature running through this enterprise is the goal of gaining a better understanding of industrial models and processes through mathematical ideas and computations. The authors of this book have undertaken the approach of presenting real industrial problems and their mathematical modeling as a motivation for developing mathematical methods that are needed for solving the problems. With each chapter presenting one important problem that arises in today's industry, and then studying the problem by mathematical analysis and computation, this book introduces the reader to many new ideas and methods from ordinary and partial differential equations, and from integral equations and control theory. It brings the excitement of real industrial problems into the undergraduate mathematical curriculum. The problems selected are accessible to students who have already taken what in many colleges and universities constitutes the first two-year basic Calculus sequence. A working knowledge of Fortran, Pascal, or C language is required.

Book Mathematics in Industrial Problems

Download or read book Mathematics in Industrial Problems written by Avner Friedman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume in the series "Mathematics in Industrial Prob lems." The motivation for these volumes is to foster interaction between Industry and Mathematics at the "grass roots"; that is, at the level of spe cific problems. These problems come from Industry: they arise from models developed by the industrial scientists in ventures directed at the manufac ture of new or improved products. At the same time, these problems have the potential for mathematical challenge and novelty. To identify such problems, I have visited industries and had discussions with their scientists. Some of the scientists have subsequently presented their problems in the IMA Seminar on Industrial Problems. The book is based on questions raised in the seminar and subsequent discussions. Each chapter is devoted to one of the talks and is self-contained. The chap ters usually provide references to the mathematical literature and a list of open problems which are of interest to the industrial scientists. For some problems partial solution is indicated briefly. The last chapter of the book contains a short description of solutions to some of the problems raised in the third volume, as well as references to papers in which such solutions have been published.

Book Composition Modulation of Catalytic Reactors

Download or read book Composition Modulation of Catalytic Reactors written by P L Silverton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-26 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composition modulation is a method of operating a catalytic reactor to improve catalyst activity or selectivity and has been under study for more than 25 years. In the last few years, several commercial applications have been realized and more will certainly appear. A large international research literature now exists. This book examines this literature and attempts to organize and analyze it with the intent of identifying the magnitude of improvements possible, why modulation is effective, and what questions remain unanswered. Topics include hydrogenation, oxidation, reduction, and polymerization reactions for NOX, SOX, NH3, and hydrocarbons.
