Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mathematical Geography: With a Supplement Containing an Outline of Astronomy, and a Manual for the Stellar Tellurian, Designed for Common Schools The contents may be summed up briefly as follows The Earth's Form; (2) Its Size; (3) Its Division by Circles; (4) Its Motions and their Results; (5) Its Relations to other Heavenly Bodies, particularly the Sun and Moon. It will be seen that more ground is covered in this department than in ordinary geographies. In fact, all that part of astronomical science into which the earth enters as a prominent element, is assumed to belong legitimately to the subject; although great care has been taken not to introduce into the body of the book any topic which may not, by simple language and familiar illustration, be easily understood by those for whom the book is designed. Download or read book Chasing Shadows written by Clemency Montelle and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lunar and solar eclipses have always fascinated human beings. Digging deep into history, Clemency Montelle examines the ways in which theoretical understanding of eclipses originated and how ancient and medieval cultures shared, developed, and preserved their knowledge of these awe-inspiring events. Eclipses were the celestial phenomena most challenging to understand in the ancient world. Montelle draws on original research—much of it derived from reading primary source material written in Akkadian and Sanskrit, as well as ancient Greek, Latin, and Arabic—to explore how observers in Babylon, the Islamic Near East, Greece, and India developed new astronomical and mathematical techniques to predict and describe the features of eclipses. She identifies the profound scientific discoveries of these four cultures and discusses how the societies exchanged information about eclipses. In constructing this history, Montelle establishes a clear pattern of the transmission of scientific ideas from one culture to another in the ancient and medieval world. Chasing Shadows is an invitingly written and highly informative exploration of the early history of astronomy.

Book Islamic Astronomy and Geography

Download or read book Islamic Astronomy and Geography written by David A. King and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-02-13 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of 12 studies, mainly published during the past 15 years, begins with an overview of the Islamic astronomy covering not only sophisticated mathematical astronomy and instrumentation but also simple folk astronomy, and the ways in which astronomy was used in the service of religion. It continues with discussions of the importance of Islamic instruments and scientific manuscript illustrations. Three studies deal with the regional schools that developed in Islamic astronomy, in this case, Egypt and the Maghrib. Another focuses on a curious astrological table for calculating the length of life of any individual. The notion of the world centred on the sacred Kaaba in Mecca inspired both astronomers and proponents of folk astronomy to propose methods for finding the qibla, or sacred direction towards the Kaaba; their activities are surveyed here. The interaction between the mathematical and folk traditions in astronomy is then illustrated by an 11th-century text on the qibla in Transoxania. The last three studies deal with an account of the geodetic measurements sponsored by the Caliph al-Ma'mûn in the 9th century; a world-map in the tradition of the 11th-century polymath al-Bîrûnî, alas corrupted by careless copying; and a table of geographical coordinates from 15th-century Egypt.
