Book Accuracy and Reliability in Scientific Computing

Download or read book Accuracy and Reliability in Scientific Computing written by Bo Einarsson and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical software is used to test scientific theories, design airplanes and bridges, operate manufacturing lines, control power plants and refineries, analyze financial derivatives, identify genomes, and provide the understanding necessary to derive and analyze cancer treatments. Because of the high stakes involved, it is essential that results computed using software be accurate, reliable, and robust. Unfortunately, developing accurate and reliable scientific software is notoriously difficult. This book investigates some of the difficulties related to scientific computing and provides insight into how to overcome them and obtain dependable results. The tools to assess existing scientific applications are described, and a variety of techniques that can improve the accuracy and reliability of newly developed applications is discussed. Accuracy and Reliability in Scientific Computing can be considered a handbook for improving the quality of scientific computing. It will help computer scientists address the problems that affect software in general as well as the particular challenges of numerical computation: approximations occurring at all levels, continuous functions replaced by discretized versions, infinite processes replaced by finite ones, and real numbers replaced by finite precision numbers. Divided into three parts, it starts by illustrating some of the difficulties in producing robust and reliable scientific software. Well-known cases of failure are reviewed and the what and why of numerical computations are considered. The second section describes diagnostic tools that can be used to assess the accuracy and reliability of existing scientific applications. In the last section, the authors describe a variety of techniques that can be employed to improve the accuracy and reliability of newly developed scientific applications. The authors of the individual chapters are international experts, many of them members of the IFIP Working Group on Numerical Software.

Book Statistical Computer Performance Evaluation

Download or read book Statistical Computer Performance Evaluation written by Walter Freiberger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Computer Performance Evaluation contains the proceedings of a Conference on Statistical Computer Performance Evaluation held at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on November 22-23, 1971, under the auspices of the Division of Applied Mathematics and the Center for Computer and Information Sciences. The papers review the application of quantitative, and particularly statistical, methods to the study of computer performance. Comprised of 19 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the state of the art of computer system evaluation and some quantitative methods (analytical, simulation, and empirical methods) that are applicable to the problem. A utility theoretic approach to evaluation of a time-sharing system is then described, followed by a discussion on the results of a multi-factor paging experiment. Subsequent chapters focus on statistical quantification of instruction and operand traces; measurement and improvement of program behavior under paging systems; free-storage algorithms; and probabilistic models for predicting software reliability. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners in the fields ofcomputer science and applied mathematics.

Book Computer Performance and Reliability

Download or read book Computer Performance and Reliability written by Giuseppe G. Iazeolla and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1988 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MCPR Workshop is an interdisciplinary computer science/mathematics event. It takes place once very fourth year and is aimed at evaluating the latest progress in modeling techniques in the area of performance and reliability engineering of computer/communication systems. Like its predecessor, the workshop from which these papers originate aimed at stimulating the exchange of ideas and experience among scientists active in mathematics research relevant to performance and reliability aspects of the design of computer and communication systems. The spirit of these exchanges and the main issues at stake are defined by an unceasing and difficult quest for models and techniques which are in the interests of mathematical tractability and accuracy, and at the same time allow for enough realism so as to yield results which are pertinent to system designers. This was reflected in the present program, which proposed a balanced and varied mixture of approximation techniques, of simulation methods and of analytical results on queueing, matrix and Petri net models.

Book Developments in Reliable Computing

Download or read book Developments in Reliable Computing written by Tibor Csendes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SCAN conference, the International Symposium on Scientific Com puting, Computer Arithmetic and Validated Numerics, takes place bian nually under the joint auspices of GAMM (Gesellschaft fiir Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik) and IMACS (International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation). SCAN-98 attracted more than 100 participants from 21 countries all over the world. During the four days from September 22 to 25, nine highlighted, plenary lectures and over 70 contributed talks were given. These figures indicate a large participation, which was partly caused by the attraction of the organizing country, Hungary, but also the effec tive support system have contributed to the success. The conference was substantially supported by the Hungarian Research Fund OTKA, GAMM, the National Technology Development Board OMFB and by the J6zsef Attila University. Due to this funding, it was possible to subsidize the participation of over 20 scientists, mainly from Eastern European countries. It is important that the possibly first participation of 6 young researchers was made possible due to the obtained support. The number of East-European participants was relatively high. These results are especially valuable, since in contrast to the usual 2 years period, the present meeting was organized just one year after the last SCAN-xx conference.

Book A Performance Reliability Model for Computing Systems

Download or read book A Performance Reliability Model for Computing Systems written by Xavier Castillo and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper some measures are presented that characterize both the performance and reliability of digital computing systems in time sharing environments from a user viewpoint. The measures (Apparent Capacity and Expected Elapsed Time required to correctly execute a given program) are based on a mathematical model built upon traditional assumptions. The model is a hybrid in that is uses statistics gathered from a real system while giving analytical expressions for other statistics such as the Expected Elapsed time. The main parameters of the model are the system workload and the distribution of the time between errors. Although still limited because of the restrictive assumptions used, the model gives quantitative results about how much a user can expect from a time sharing system, as a function of the system workload and reliability. For example, this study measured a four to one range in mean time to system failure as a function of system load. For the maximum load period measured the model predicts a 40 % contribution from system unreliability to expected computation time for a program that could require 30 minutes of CPU time in an unloaded situation. Book Performance and Reliability Analysis of Computer Systems

Download or read book Performance and Reliability Analysis of Computer Systems written by Robin A. Sahner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-11-30 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance and Reliability Analysis of Computer Systems: An Example-Based Approach Using the SHARPE Software Package provides a variety of probabilistic, discrete-state models used to assess the reliability and performance of computer and communication systems. The models included are combinatorial reliability models (reliability block diagrams, fault trees and reliability graphs), directed, acyclic task precedence graphs, Markov and semi-Markov models (including Markov reward models), product-form queueing networks and generalized stochastic Petri nets. A practical approach to system modeling is followed; all of the examples described are solved and analyzed using the SHARPE tool. In structuring the book, the authors have been careful to provide the reader with a methodological approach to analytical modeling techniques. These techniques are not seen as alternatives but rather as an integral part of a single process of assessment which, by hierarchically combining results from different kinds of models, makes it possible to use state-space methods for those parts of a system that require them and non-state-space methods for the more well-behaved parts of the system. The SHARPE (Symbolic Hierarchical Automated Reliability and Performance Evaluator) package is the `toolchest' that allows the authors to specify stochastic models easily and solve them quickly, adopting model hierarchies and very efficient solution techniques. All the models described in the book are specified and solved using the SHARPE language; its syntax is described and the source code of almost all the examples discussed is provided. Audience: Suitable for use in advanced level courses covering reliability and performance of computer and communications systems and by researchers and practicing engineers whose work involves modeling of system performance and reliability.
