Book Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Methods for Science and Technology

Download or read book Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Methods for Science and Technology written by Robert Dautray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-11-23 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of high-speed computers has made it possible for the first time to calculate values from models accurately and rapidly. Researchers and engineers thus have a crucial means of using numerical results to modify and adapt arguments and experiments along the way. Every facet of technical and industrial activity has been affected by these developments. The objective of the present work is to compile the mathematical knowledge required by researchers in mechanics, physics, engineering, chemistry and other branches of application of mathematics for the theoretical and numerical resolution of physical models on computers. Since the publication in 1924 of the "Methoden der mathematischen Physik" by Courant and Hilbert, there has been no other comprehensive and up-to-date publication presenting the mathematical tools needed in applications of mathematics in directly implementable form.

Book excerpt: 299 G(t), and to obtain the corresponding properties of its Laplace transform (called the resolvent of - A) R(p) = (A + pl)-l , whose existence is linked with the spectrum of A. The functional space framework used will be, for simplicity, a Banach space(3). To summarise, we wish to extend definition (2) for bounded operators A, i.e. G(t) = exp( - tA) , to unbounded operators A over X, where X is now a Banach space. Plan of the Chapter We shall see in this chapter that this enterprise is possible, that it gives us in addition to what is demanded above, some supplementary information in a number of areas: - a new 'explicit' expression of the solution; - the regularity of the solution taking into account some conditions on the given data (u , u1,f etc ... ) with the notion of a strong solution; o - asymptotic properties of the solutions. In order to treat these problems we go through the following stages: in § 1, we shall study the principal properties of operators of semigroups {G(t)} acting in the space X, particularly the existence of an upper exponential bound (in t) of the norm of G(t). In §2, we shall study the functions u E X for which t --+ G(t)u is differentiable.

Download or read book Spectral Methods written by Jie Shen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with finite differences and finite elements, spectral methods are one of the three main methodologies for solving partial differential equations on computers. This book provides a detailed presentation of basic spectral algorithms, as well as a systematical presentation of basic convergence theory and error analysis for spectral methods. Readers of this book will be exposed to a unified framework for designing and analyzing spectral algorithms for a variety of problems, including in particular high-order differential equations and problems in unbounded domains. The book contains a large number of figures which are designed to illustrate various concepts stressed in the book. A set of basic matlab codes has been made available online to help the readers to develop their own spectral codes for their specific applications.

Book Numerical Analysis of Spectral Methods

Book Operator Semigroups Meet Complex Analysis Harmonic Analysis and Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Operator Semigroups Meet Complex Analysis Harmonic Analysis and Mathematical Physics written by Wolfgang Arendt and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-12-10 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume originates from a conference held in Herrnhut in June 2013. It provides unique insights into the power of abstract methods and techniques in dealing successfully with numerous applications stemming from classical analysis and mathematical physics. The book features diverse topics in the area of operator semigroups, including partial differential equations, martingale and Hilbert transforms, Banach and von Neumann algebras, Schrödinger operators, maximal regularity and Fourier multipliers, interpolation, operator-theoretical problems (concerning generation, perturbation and dilation, for example), and various qualitative and quantitative Tauberian theorems with a focus on transfinite induction and magics of Cantor. The last fifteen years have seen the dawn of a new era for semigroup theory with the emphasis on applications of abstract results, often unexpected and far removed from traditional ones. The aim of the conference was to bring together prominent experts in the field of modern semigroup theory, harmonic analysis, complex analysis and mathematical physics, and to present the lively interactions between all of those areas and beyond. In addition, the meeting honored the sixtieth anniversary of Prof C. J. K. Batty, whose scientific achievements are an impressive illustration of the conference goal. These proceedings present contributions by prominent scientists at this international conference, which became a landmark event. They will be a valuable and inspiring source of information for graduate students and established researchers.
