Book excerpt: A young girl sees the world differently in this beautiful picture book celebration of math. Everyone has a passion. For some, it's music. For others, it's art. For our heroine, it's math. When she looks around the world, she sees math in all the beautiful things: the concentric circles a stone makes in a lake, the curve of a slide, the geometric shapes in the playground. Others don't understand her passion, but she doesn't mind. There are infinite ways to see the world. And through math is one of them. This book is a gorgeous ode to something vital but rarely celebrated. In the eyes of this little girl, math takes its place alongside painting, drawing and song as a way to ponder the beauty of the world.

Book A Beautiful Math

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tom Siegfried
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2006-09-21
  • ISBN : 0309133807
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book A Beautiful Math written by Tom Siegfried and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-09-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions have seen the movie and thousands have read the book but few have fully appreciated the mathematics developed by John Nash's beautiful mind. Today Nash's beautiful math has become a universal language for research in the social sciences and has infiltrated the realms of evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and even quantum physics. John Nash won the 1994 Nobel Prize in economics for pioneering research published in the 1950s on a new branch of mathematics known as game theory. At the time of Nash's early work, game theory was briefly popular among some mathematicians and Cold War analysts. But it remained obscure until the 1970s when evolutionary biologists began applying it to their work. In the 1980s economists began to embrace game theory. Since then it has found an ever expanding repertoire of applications among a wide range of scientific disciplines. Today neuroscientists peer into game players' brains, anthropologists play games with people from primitive cultures, biologists use games to explain the evolution of human language, and mathematicians exploit games to better understand social networks. A common thread connecting much of this research is its relevance to the ancient quest for a science of human social behavior, or a Code of Nature, in the spirit of the fictional science of psychohistory described in the famous Foundation novels by the late Isaac Asimov. In A Beautiful Math, acclaimed science writer Tom Siegfried describes how game theory links the life sciences, social sciences, and physical sciences in a way that may bring Asimov's dream closer to reality.

Math is as focused as flash cards, but with far more range, interactivity, and educational value. Each grade comprises two decks. 1st Grade has five questions to a card, covering Numeration, or the basics of numbers; Bits & Pieces, including shapes and equivalents; Computation-addition and subtraction; Measurements; and Problem-Solving. 2nd Grade, with seven questions to a card, adds two new categories to the original five-Super Computation, which has more complicated operations, and Fun with Numbers. Reading takes a thorough approach to working on the fundamentals of reading and language arts. First comes an original one-page story illustrated in full-color, with 56 stories per grade. Following the story card is a comprehension card, quizzing the reader about the story, its characters, and content. Following that card is a second question card-five questions for 1st Grade, seven for 2nd Grade-on Grammar, Word Choice, Phonics, Vocabulary, Extensions, and Mixed Bag. Book Tales of Impossibility

  • Author : David S. Richeson
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2021-11-02
  • ISBN : 0691218722

Download or read book Tales of Impossibility written by David S. Richeson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at four of the most famous problems in mathematics Tales of Impossibility recounts the intriguing story of the renowned problems of antiquity, four of the most famous and studied questions in the history of mathematics. First posed by the ancient Greeks, these compass and straightedge problems—squaring the circle, trisecting an angle, doubling the cube, and inscribing regular polygons in a circle—have served as ever-present muses for mathematicians for more than two millennia. David Richeson follows the trail of these problems to show that ultimately their proofs—which demonstrated the impossibility of solving them using only a compass and straightedge—depended on and resulted in the growth of mathematics. Richeson investigates how celebrated luminaries, including Euclid, Archimedes, Viète, Descartes, Newton, and Gauss, labored to understand these problems and how many major mathematical discoveries were related to their explorations. Although the problems were based in geometry, their resolutions were not, and had to wait until the nineteenth century, when mathematicians had developed the theory of real and complex numbers, analytic geometry, algebra, and calculus. Pierre Wantzel, a little-known mathematician, and Ferdinand von Lindemann, through his work on pi, finally determined the problems were impossible to solve. Along the way, Richeson provides entertaining anecdotes connected to the problems, such as how the Indiana state legislature passed a bill setting an incorrect value for pi and how Leonardo da Vinci made elegant contributions in his own study of these problems. Taking readers from the classical period to the present, Tales of Impossibility chronicles how four unsolvable problems have captivated mathematical thinking for centuries.
